Wintec,Te Wa-nanga o Aotearoa and Waikato-Tainui have teamed up together to help you enhance your Tikanga Ma-ori and get the skills and qualifications you need to do a modern apprenticeship in carpentry, get a job within the building and construction industry or do further study.

The Ma-ori Trade Training Programme allows you to study towards both the Certificate in Building (Level 4) and the Certificate in Tikanga Ma-ori (He Papa Tikanga) (Level 3).

Both programmes are integrated to include theory, practice and work experience within a noho marae and wananga environment incorporating te reo and tikanga.

CERTIFICATE IN BUILDING (LEVEL 4)

This programme gives you the foundation of industry knowledge and skills that will enhance your ability to gain employment and apprenticeships in the building and construction sector. You will have the theoretical knowledge and the introductory practical skills that are valued by employers selecting new apprentices.

The Certificate in Building (Level 4) includes compulsory content associated with health and safety in the workplace, New Zealand First Aid, communications skills, and timekeeping. It also includes the correct and safe use of hand tools, power tools and machines used in carpentry and safe working procedures on construction sites.

ENTRY CRITERIA

Open entry, although students must demonstrate a reasonable likelihood of success.

To meet legal and health requirements, candidates must be physically able to carry out the practical components of the programme.

WAIKATO-TAINUI

This programme has been developed in collaboration with Waikato-Tainui.

Waikato-Tainui will assist with work experience, including Marae projects, and financial assistance for registered tribal members.

CERTIFICATE IN TIKANGA MAORI (HE PAPA TIKANGA) (LEVEL 3)

This programme will develop your understanding and appreciation of the Ma-ori world view and how it functions within New Zealand and international societies.

You will learn how to apply the concepts in your home, workplace and community. You will also learn about iwi development and study basic te reo Ma-ori.
