On a narrow sliver of land between the Grand Canal and the Bacino di San Marco in Venice, Italy, you will find an architectural marvel. It is the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (The Basilica of St Mary of Health), a Roman Catholic church referred to by the locals simply as La Salute.

Due to a devastating outbreak of the plague in 1630 that killed nearly one-third of the city’s 150,000 residents, the Republic of Venice vowed to build a church and dedicate it to Our Lady of Deliverance (Salute) if God would end the plague. The church was designed in the Palladian style by Baldassare Longhena. The basilica and its dramatic steps of white Istrian stone arebuilt on over 1,000,000 wooden pilings that remain intact after more than 300 years. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death.
