Fundraising and DevelopmentThere is a Jewish proverb that states “If charity cost nothing, the worldwould be full of philanthropists.” During the high holidays, philan-thropy is on the mind of many people. Similar to the synagogues, theJCC relies on the generosity of our members and donors to assist usin providing for those in need residing in the Staten Island community. There are many ways for you to become more involved in the JCC

family. Our fourteen departments are always in need of volunteers toassist with different aspects of our many programs. Philanthropy isanother important way to support the JCC. We distribute over$300,000 in camp and nursery school scholarships to families in needliving throughout our community each year. We also supplement thecost of many of the J’s wonderful programs so that we can remain theplace to be, even when individuals and/or families are struggling finan-cially.The Tribute Program has just completed its first year at the JCC.

This program enables you to acknowledge a loved one’s special day(birthday, graduation, etc.), honor and/or memorialize someone as wellas make a meaningful gift to the JCC. More information about this pro-gram is available in our Program Guide and at the reception desks atboth the Bernikow and Avis buildings. There are a number of additional options to become a JCC donor in-

cluding planned giving, sponsoring an event or program and addingyour name to our list of donors that appear on the beautifully in-scribed Jerusalem stone wall in our lobby. Please contact Anita Bruck-meir, 718.475.5234 or [email protected] if you have anyquestions. For additional fundraising news see page 9.

Teen Tri-partnership London ExperienceOn a hot, humid day in mid-August eight teens and two adult chap-erones from the JCC of Staten Island traveled to Redbridge, Eng-land, met up with teens from Israel and England and participated ina 10 day educational and cultural journey of a lifetime. In theprocess, they developed friendships that are sure to last for manyyears to come. From the moment the teens set foot in England, they were busy

learning leadership skills, experiencing British culture and life, ex-ploring their Jewish identity and bonding with their peers from dif-ferent cultures. The leadership skills training focused on topics ranging from “how

to organize community service projects” to “how teens can take thelead in greening the planet.” Touring included stops at many of London’s most famous land-

marks and destinations including Big Ben, the London Eye FerrisWheel, the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, the Londonunderground, Piccadilly Circus and a showing of the British theatresensation We Will Rock You. The teens also learned about Britishculture first-hand as they enjoyed home hospitality from membersof the Redbridge community. The trip culminated with a Shabbaton at a lush camp-site that was

highlighted by festive Shabbat meals, Jewish identity workshops anda spirited bonfire with singing and dancing. The teens plan to maintain their friendships via Facebook and are

planning to run similar community service projects in their respec-tive communities on the same date in the Spring. Our Staten Islandteens are also planning to create a photo exhibit which reflects teenand Jewish life in New York in the early 21st century which will bedisplayed in both England and Israel. The trip is part of the UJA sponsored Tri-Partnership Project in

which Jewish communities in the United States, Israel, and Europeare paired with each other with the goal of developing Jewish com-munal bonds, learning from each other and in the process enrichingand being enriched by one another.

The teen participants were Yarden Badry, Jillian Ballow, TaraFinkelstein, Danielle Israelov, Carissa Mazzeo, Tyler Romeo,Lielle Sosa and Alyssa Stefanese. The trip chaperones were MarkZuckerbrow and Heather Mast.

Exercise for HealthDaily exercise is not only good for the outside of yourbody but so important for what it can do for the inside ofyour body as well. Daily exercise for at least 30 minutesof moderate to intensive activity can help to improve thefollowing for your health:• Strengthens the immune system-by exercising you can increase the white blood cells for a temporary time promoting the repair of cells.

• Stronger lymphatic system-this is important as it helps to rid the body of toxins and dead cancerous cells, infectious viruses and much more.

• Arthritis and circulation-movement through exercising helps to cleanse toxic materials from the joints and helps to promote circulation by more oxygen being carried to the cells.

• Osteoporosis-by building up bone density through exercise you can help to fight and or decrease the effects of osteoporosis.

• Cancer-exercise can help to stimulate the immune system by completely flushing out the lymph system. There is so much more that exercise can do to help improve your health and make you feel

great from inside out. Exercise also helps to promote and improve your mental health and liftyour spirits.
