rising cost of diesel fuel, and overfishing have eroded the seafood

industry that supports this community. Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina,

slowed business even further, and the community was just beginning to

recover when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in April. Now, BP

has thrown astonishing amounts of money at this small town, and

competition for “free money” pitted community members against each

other. Worse still, the drama distracts from the reality of what will

happen when the oil money stops, and the community is left without its

industry and livelihood. – Reed Young

We want to feel like old school photography masters: mixing chemicals

So, what did we do when we learned that some of the first color

photographs were made almost 150 years ago, and they weren’t made

with color film?

We learned how to use our digital cameras to party like it was 1909, of

course!

Now we’re going to share everything we learned and show you how to

bring out your inner mad-photo-scientist to make full color photographs

Artist Photographs Happy MealOnce a Week for 180 Days, NoChange in AppearanceOCT 14, 2010 02:07A.M.

The infamous Happy Meal. Top: Day 1, Bottom: Day 180. Photographs

by Sally Davies.

What originally started out as an argument over how long it would take

for a McDonalds Happy Meal to get moldy, turned into a scientific

experiment and eventually a fascinating photographic project.

On April 10, 2010, Sally Davies, a New York City photographer,

purchased a Happy Meal with the plans of letting it sit out on her coffee

table, uncovered, to prove a friend wrong who was convinced it would

get moldy and rot after only a few days.

Sally began photographing the burger and fries daily and posting the

images on her Flickr. After a week, the Happy Meal’s appearance looked

virtually unchanged. This was when Sally realized two things—first, that

her friend was indeed wrong and second, that she should hang onto the

meal to see just how long it would actually take to rot.

180 days later, Sally had acquired 27 images of the burger (after the first

ten days, she began photographing the meal about once a week). The

scary part: the first photo of the fresh burger and fries looks almost

identical to the burger and fries photographed a half a year later.

How does that sit in your stomach?

Water Emergency (4 photos)OCT 14, 2010 01:00A.M.

© Michael F. McElroy.

India has 17 percent of the World’s population and just 4 percent of its

fresh water. With a population at 1.2 billion people and counting, the

cities are bursting at the seams. Water cuts, pollution and a lack of basic

services are the reality for millions. These photographs are part of an

ongoing project documenting the water Crisis in India.

Above: Saneosh Naitam holds 1 of 8 notebooks that date back from 1998

to present. The notebooks hold the names of 15,000 farmers who have

committed suicide in the Vidarbha region. Farmer suicides are directly

related to the water crisis. Failed crops, due to lower than average

monsoon season, cause the farmers to borrow more money for the next

years crop and incur more debt. The farmers see no way out of debt and

turn to suicide, out of shame. To see more of McElroy’s work click here.

The people living on the sidewalks and roads in India’s richest city ( the’

illegals’ as the Government refers to them) have no source of sanitation

or water and every day becomes a search for water to drink, wash clothes

and bathe.

Dehli’s Yumuna river has been heavily polluted with raw sewage and

industrial waste turning this once clean river into a bubbling black

mess.Fifty-seven million people depend on the Yumuna waters and the

river supplies 70 percent of Delhi’s water.

Mumbai’s water is somewhat infamous. It’s not clean, and its supply is

inconsistent. For millions living in the city, water is obtained at any

means necessary, even if that mean illegally tapping city water pipes.

Music MakersOCT 13, 2010 01:00A.M.

While on a typical commercial assignment, James, a retired golf caddie,

started belting out a simple blues rendition of the song Stardust… High

up in the sky the little stars climb, always reminding me that we’re

apart… a favorite tune of his late wife. James was not a musician by

trade, but his soulful interpretation of the melody overcame the

shakiness of his pitch. James’ delivery was innate. The emotional

connection created while taking this portrait stirred my desire to

continue with a series. Today, I’ve photographed over thirty like-souls in

a series I call “Music Makers”.” – Jimmy Williams
