7. The Station (Hideaway) HotelTrading since 1881, this popular hotel was once the haunt of gold miners and timber workers. With its wide open verandas, original doors and windows it has been unspoilt by the passage of time.
If you choose to stay longer in Tiaro accommodation is available at the Hideaway Hotal, Tiaro Tourist Stopover, the Tiaro District Motor Inn and the Tiaro B&B.
Turn left into Blackmount Road, turn left into Vandoorn Road, follow to …
8. Petrie Park One of the best places to explore the Mary River and enjoy all it offers is beautiful Petrie Park. The park is named after colonial explorer Andrew Petrie who discovered the river in 1842. He and a small party rowed up the river from its mouth at River Heads until they reached this point and could not go any further because of rapids. Petrie named it Wide Bay River. In 1847, the Governor of Queensland changed its name to Mary after his wife Lady Mary Fitzroy.
Petrie Park is a koala habitat and they can often be seen in the park’s eucalypt trees.
Facilities at Petrie Park include a boat ramp, toilets, barbeque and shady camping area. Free overnight camping is permitted.
Campers are asked to treat the park as an environmentally sensitive area with respect to fire, vegetation and waste disposal.
Launch a boat off the ramp or fish off the riverbank for barramundi, bass or catfish.
A short canoe trip on the Mary River could bring

Continue east along Inman St for approx 1 km to turn left into Old Coach Road, which is part of the original gold rush track from Maryborough to Gympie. BIKE AND WALKING TRAILSBicentennial National Trail The Bicentennial National Trail (BNT), which stretches from Far Northern Queensland to Victoria, passes through the length of the Fraser Coast region starting from the old town of Musket Flat in the north to Munna Creek. The trail follows secondary roads and obscure bush tracks and leads trekkers along stock routes, historic mail, coach and wagon routes.
Munna Creek Hall is an ideal staging point. An especially scenic 10km section of the BNT which follows the Mary River along much of the way starts at the hall and ends at Ramsey’s Road near the historic Emery’s Bridge at Gundiah (or vice versa). It is an enjoyable easy cycle, walk or horse ride and is suitable for families and beginner trekkers with a clearly defined track on the off-road sections.
Campsites (usually with few facilities except water) are spaced a day’s trek apart (cyclists can often cover a couple of map sections in a day). Guidebooks with maps and trekking information are available from the website and there are triangular markers along the way.
For more information go to: www.nationaltrail.com.au
OTHER BIKE AND WALKING TRAILSMunna Creek / Gundiah / Theebine LoopA secondary loop of the BNT takes trekkers past the old Gundiah and Theebine pubs, before heading back out to the Trail near the historic Dickabram Bridge. Fit cyclists could ride this 50km loop easily in a day.
Theebine / Miva LoopThis loop which takes in Theebine, Kanyan, the Dickabram Bridge and Miva, is approximately 20km and suitable for beginners and families.
Gundiah Pub to Emery’s BridgeA 12km mild to moderate trek from Gundiah along Emery’s Bridge Road to Emery’s Crossing on the Mary River.
Munna Creek to MivaA 35km scenic trail along the Munna Creek–Miva Road.

as a “living fossil”, is only found naturally in the Mary River and nearby Burnett River systems. This ‘vulnerable’ species can wriggle over ground for about 10 metres and is said to live more than 100 years.
Mary River Cod – This large cod is one of Australia’s most endangered fish. Natural populations are now only found in the Mary River system.

The Bauple area is the ancestral home of the Bauple Nut or MacadamiaNut, as it is known around the world.
Aboriginal people called the Kabi are believed to have discovered the Bauple nut when they settled here possibly 30,000 years ago. The Mountain and its surrounds became a sacred place and a major trading pathway. The nuts became a special item of trade, a staple food and were used for gifts.
An aboriginal dreamtime legend tells the story of a warrior called Baphal who was sent to guard the Mountain. He was injured and survived because his lizard got the wallabies to collect water for him and the cockatoos to bring nuts. His people named the Mountain, the lizard and the nut after him.
The first recorded history of the nuts was in 1858 when botanists discovered two species growing in rainforest and named the genus macadamia after Dr. John Macadam, a noted scientist and secretary to the Philosophical Institute of Australia.
The Macadamia nut is the only plant food native to Australia that is produced and exported as a commercial crop.
