On Thursday, June 25 th , the CHHA Task Force completed the formal field walk of the neighborhood. CHHA Task Force members (Diane Mahoney and Chris Tacinelli) at- tended the field walk with representatives from Supervi- sor Frey’s office, Fairfax County Department of Trans- portation and the Virginia Department of Transportation as well as other Chantilly Highlands homeowners and residents. The purpose of the field walk was to develop a plan of locations and physical devices to be placed on Kinross and Cobra to reduce the speed and volume on these streets. What Did We Do on the Field Walk? The field walk consisted of using a device to measure distances on Kinross and Cobra to determine where a physical device, such as speed humps, raised crosswalks, etc., could be located. The VDOT requirements for placing a physical device are approximately 700-800 feet apart. Current stop signs also have to be taken into consideration. For instance, if we begin measuring at the southern end of Kinross at the stoplight we would measure 700-800 feet to find a suit- able location where a physical device could be placed then we would continue on from that location for 700-800 feet until the stop sign at Kinross/Greenstone. If we would reach the stop sign at Greenstone before the 700 feet then VDOT could decide not to allow a physical de- vice within that stretch of road. Some things VDOT and FCDOT consider when deter- mining a specific location for a physical device were manhole covers, drainage areas, utility boxes, proximity to the front door of a house and driveways. Once a suit- able location was determined then VDOT and FCDOT recommended the type of device that would best fit at that location. Results of Field Walk A proposed plan of traffic calming measures for Kinross and Cobra was discussed as part of the walk. The CHHA Task Force identified potential locations that meet the VDOT and FCDOT requirements on Kinross and Cobra. Specific types of traffic calming devices were also se- lected and included in the proposed plan. VDOT and FCDOT are in the process of reviewing the proposed plan elements and developing a recommended plan to ensure compliance with all applicable standards. Once finalized, an upcoming newsletter will contain all of the details, including a map of the locations where physi- cal devices are to be placed and the type of devices with diagrams and/or photos. We anticipate that VDOT and FCDOT will have the proposed plan available by Septem- ber or October. Residents of Chantilly Highlands will continue to be informed of this matter through future newsletter articles and website postings. The June and July 2008 issues of The Chantilly High- lander contained important information about this project. If you missed these articles, previous newsletters can be found on the Chantilly Highlands website at www.chha.org . Community Center Scheduler Needed After 8 years of service, our current volunteer sched-

uler for the Community Center, Pam White, is stepping down. We’d like to thank Pam for her dedicated service! Now we need someone to take on this task. This is a great way to meet a lot of your neighbors, and Pam is available to help train you!

We also need interested person(s) to fill the position of Community Center Cleaner.

Interested parties should contact Paul Thurneyson at 703-318-1468 for more information on either of these.

On Thursday, June 25th, the CHHA Task Force completed the formal field walk of the neighborhood. CHHA Task Force members (Diane Mahoney and Chris Tacinelli) at-tended the field walk with representatives from Supervi-sor Frey’s office, Fairfax County Department of Trans-portation and the Virginia Department of Transportation as well as other Chantilly Highlands homeowners and residents. HAVE A BOY? WANT A SCOUT? Do you have a rising 1st through 5th grader who

would like to go to the circus, try his hand at hiking, snow tubing, ice skating, camping, or chess? Would he like to build his own model race car and race it against other boys in the area? Would you be inter-ested in summer camps which provide a wide range of activities guaranteed to entertain them and help them build life skills? Teaching boys to respect one another and the environment, and that service to oth-ers is important for a successful life are hallmarks of the program.

You’re interested, but you think you are already involved in too many activities? Many of our scouts are active in sports, music, and other after school activities. The full Pack meets once a month at Oak Hill Elementary, and individual Cub Scout dens, made up of groups of around 8 boys who are in the same grade, meet on a schedule that works for all the den members, at least once a month. Many activities can be combined with what you’re already doing at home and school.

Cub Scout Pack 160 will have information at Oak Hill Elementary’s Back-to-School Nights in Septem-ber, and will hold a special Join Scouting Night on Thursday, September 18. Mark your calendar and look for signs with details in September.

Support the Fairfax County Police Department Canteen by Saving your Caps & Flaps!

The Citizen’s Police Academy alumni are collecting Coke bottle caps and 12-pack flaps for the FCPD Canteen. The Canteen provides needed refresh-ments to officers during critical incidents. Reward points from caps and flaps will be redeemed for free refreshments from Coke. You may bring the caps and flaps into the Fair Oaks Police District Station at 12300 Lee Jackson Memorial Hwy (Route 50), phone (703) 591-0966. The re-ceptionist will put them into the collection box.

Thanks for your support!

Chantilly Highlands Swim Team Exceeds Blood Drive Goals

The Chantilly Highlands Dolphins wish to thank everyone who participated in the July 2 blood drive during our home swim meet. INOVA Blood Donor Services had set a goal of collecting 32 units during the evening. The INOVA workers got a first-hand look at the generosity of our residents and our Arm-field Farms visitors with 64 people registering to do-nate and 53 units collected over the course of the evening!

Each pint of blood that was donated will help save the lives of several people—among them, newborn babies, cancer patients, burn victims, and open-heart surgery candidates. If you are interested in finding locations of upcoming bloodmobiles, please call 1-866-BLOODSAVES (1-866-256-6372).
