Dear Friends:

What a memorable Summer of 2008! Zo’s Summer Groove, the first community fundraising event I started to support children’s charities, raised more funds than ever thanks to the addition of my good friend and colleague, Dwyane Wade. Not only have we shared the best moments as Champions on the court, but now we’re also teammates in the race to help change the lives of children and families Equally important to our success were the many partners and guests who supported our event, especially returning title sponsor Miccosukee Resort & Gaming. This overall support will once more help fund the many programs and initiatives of Alonzo Mourning Charities and Wade’s World Foundation.

As we enter into the New Year and continue to maneuver through this uncertain economic climate, many youth and educational programs throughout the country, especially here in South Florida, are being negatively affected with seemingly unending cutbacks. I encourage you, above all, to ensure that your family is secure, but I also ask you to consider the youth who don’t have a voice or the support of family. I ask that in this New Year you support our youth initiatives in any way you can - sponsor, donate, or offer some of your time and resources to contribute to the causes that really matter.

We at Alonzo Mourning Charities will remain fully optimistic until each child has the opportunity to fully benefit from our programs. It is important that the Honey Shine Mentoring Program continue to provide the guidance and sisterhood that young girls struggling with issues such as body image and self-esteem need; and that the Overtown Youth Center keep it’s doors open to serve as an afterschool safe haven that is both educationally and recreationally enriching; and moreover, raise the capital funds needed for other communities like Miami Gardens to also benefit from a new youth enrichment center.

We ask that you help us continue to impact the lives of the very youth who will one day help lead this nation. On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Alonzo Mourning Charities, THANK YOU and Happy New Year.

Warm regards,

Alonzo MourningFounder, Alonzo Mourning Charities

3 4MINI-MASTERPIECES CREATEDFOR ARTOPIA EXHIBIT

MAY 22, 2008 | The Honey Shine Mentoring Program, ArtOpiA and mentors from the New World School of the Arts teamed up to let inner creativity shine through expressive artwork for this years’ ArtOpiA exhibit. Honey Shine’s program participants from across South Florida felt like master artists when their artwork was displayed at a special exhibit hosted at the Cielo Garden & Supper Club in Coconut Grove, Florida.

This year’s theme was “I am the Vision I Create.” The Honey Bugs and their mentors did not hold back in creating vibrant and meaningful art that portrayed their positive self-image. The young ladies and special invited guests had the opportunity to see each rendition during this evening. In addition, posters and t-shirts with their artwork were also on display and available for sale to raise funds for the Honey Shine Mentoring Program.

The ArtOpiA program began at the New World School of the Arts where mentors work one-on-one, covering fundamental art and design concepts, computer layout programs and various other media including painting, photography and collage.

Special thanks to: Mirta Fuentes, Maggy Cuesta, Rowena Luna, Rosario Martinex-Canas, the New World School of the Arts, Liza M. Santana from CREATIVAS and the owners and staff at Cielo Garden & Supper Club.

CAMP HONEY SHINE - FOUR WEEKS OF SELF-EXPRESSION

JUNE 06, 2008 | After many successful years, our Honey Bugs were rejuvenated over the Summer, for the 3rd year, through activities and field trips at Camp Honey Shine…

LET’S GET PHYSICAL – This summer we increased the amount of physical activity and health education during camp with dance, yoga, basketball, and nutrition classes. First Care Home Services provided nutritional lessons as well as physical education classes that showed the girls exercise can be fun and good for you. In addition, Swim Kids came to camp daily and provided swimming lessons for all of the Honey Bugs this summer. Some girls learned how to swim for the first time and some were able to build on their swimming skills. Honey Bugs were given pedometers to keep up with their steps throughout their daily activities and, as an extra bonus this year, we were able

to incorporate belly dancing and Zumba classes to the line-up of fitness classes. The Honey Bugs also worked on increasing their knowledge of hair care and make-up with For the Love of You experts.

CREATIVE MINDS – It’s important to be able to have self-expression and creativity in your life, and at Camp Honey Shine it came in the form of beading and creating scrapbooks that included designing a decorative cover. The girls also made tiaras, fabric purses, masks, and so much more. Journaling is an integral part to the overall program and this year, with journals donated by Michelle Klinger, the girls were able to work through exercises in their Chill and Spill journals that helped them dig deeper. Our capstone for creativity was the Annual Camp Honey Shine Talent Show which included 20 acts from

MARCH 2008 | The Miami division of Publix Super Markets raised over $865,000 this year for more than 40 South Florida non-profit organizations. Alonzo Mourning Charities was selected as one of the benefiting organizations and was given a grant at a luncheon held at the Publix Super Markets Miami division warehouse and distribution facility. Alonzo Mourning Charities will use the check to support the 33 Thanksgiving program as well as the Honey Shine Mentoring Program.

dancing and singing to spoken word performances. It was also attended by special surprise guests recording artist Deborah Cox and Christina Milian.

THE FUNDAMENTALS – Reading, financial literacy, and educational field trips rounded out the activities for camp. Each group received a book from their summer reading list and a bonus book (just for fun) to keep their minds active. The girls had financial literacy training by Citi Bank where they learned about savings, bonds, and other basic information to help them think about their financial future. Educational field trips included trips to University of Miami (UM) and Barry University for the high school Honey Bugs. They had a campus tour of UM and attended a musical session at Barry. The younger girls went to Butterfly World and on a Duck Tour of Miami Beach. Two tours of the Clear Channel Radio offices were arranged; the tours afforded the girls the opportunity to learn about the wide world of radio from South Florida on-air personality “Footy.”

We’d like to thank Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart for opening up their beautiful campus to our girls once more. We are forever grateful and happy for this partnership that works to change and improve the lives of young girls. Our camp staff including Talia, Jackie, Kerenzer, Charlotte, Patty, Becca, Annie, Franceska, Renee, and Raven as well as all of our volunteers and partners were amazing this year. Their hard work and services provided throughout the four weeks of camp made this summer’s Camp Honey Shine a huge success. Special thanks to Norma Jean Abraham, Women’s Fund of Miami-Dade County, Junior League of Miami, First Care Home Services, Inc., Duck Tours of Miami, Deborah Cox, Christina Milian, Rixys Diaz, John “Footy” Kross, Greta Moncayo, Leslie Ann David, Michelle Rosen, and Kids Deli.

JULY 9-13, 2008 I Alonzo “Zo” Mourning and Dwyane “Flash” Wade hosted the 12th

Annual Miccosukee Zo’s Summer Groove Introducing D. Wade (ZSG) event July 9-13,

2008 in Miami, Florida. The five-day weekend offered something for everyone from

youth basketball clinics, golf tournament, comedy jam, benefit dinner, youth summit, free

block party, all-star basketball game, and numerous after-party and exclusive functions.

Proceeds benefited Alonzo Mourning Charities and Wade’s World Foundation.

Sponsored by Miccosukee Resort & Gaming, this nationally recognized fun-filled event

has become a staple in the South Florida community and beyond. ZSG works to promote

community involvement and encourage event participants to enjoy an extended weekend

of activities that benefit South Florida’s most underserved children and families.

Kicking off the festivities on July 9th was the Nike ZSG Youth Basketball Clinic at the

Miramar Youth Enrichment Center. Mourning and Wade were joined by some of the

leagues best, including Dorell Wright and Robert Hite, to teach more than 2,000 kids

basic basketball fundamentals, team work and perseverance.

Super Bowl Champ Michael Strahan hosted one of three holes at the pristine Doral Golf

Resort & Spa in Miami for the City Furniture ZSG Golf Classic on July 10th. Golfers were

given the chance to challenge Strahan, Wade and Mourning for great prizes. In addition,

golfers made their rounds alongside invited sports greats such as Julius “Dr. J” Erving,

Artis Gilmore, Randy Moss, Ken Griffey Sr., Penny Hardaway and Glen Rice.

On July 11th a second Nike ZSG Youth Basketball Clinic session was held at the Overtown

Youth Center in Miami. Kids were joined by NBA players Udonis Haslem, Nate Robinson,

Tim Hardaway and Mike James, as well as actor James Lesure.

Publix and Publix Super Markets Charities brought the beach to the Groove by hosting the

ZSG Beach Ball on July 11th at the Hotel InterContinental Miami. Guests joined Zo and D.

Wade for a memorable beach party as they grooved to a special musical performance by

Queen Latifah, presented by Pepsi. Event-goers bid during a silent and live auction filled

with luxury items, one-of-a-kind memorabilia, and personal experiences with popular

celebrities.

The Michael Fux Foundation was the host of the ZSG Youth Summit on July 12th at

the Hotel InterContinental Miami. The summit provided young adults an opportunity

to discuss important issues with invited panelists from the community and prominent

figures from the world of sports and entertainment. Kirk Nugent opened the summit

with an empowering poem to get everyone in the right mind set for the day. Mourning

and wife Tracy Wilson Mourning alongside Wade were joined on the panel by Judge

Hatchett, Rosci, Lauren London, Ed Lover, Terrance J, Julia Yarbough, Tanya Knight, Mike

James, Miami Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra, Sanyika Calloway Boyce, Natasha D. Mayne,

Esq., Captain Barrington Irving, Kevin Bently, Adam Kuperstein, Alex Ellis, Ephren Taylor,

and Fenorris Pearson. Jonathan Sprinkles and Tamekia Flowers-Holland facilitated the

summit.

Superstar Chris Tucker took center stage at the Heineken ZSG Comedy Show hosted by

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on the evening of July 12th. Tucker, best known

for his unforgettable roles in Friday and the Rush Hour trilogy, made a long-awaited

appearance back on the comedy show stage. Joining the comedic line-up was JB

Smooth, Jay Lamont, Marvin Dixon DeRay Davis, Joe Clair and Bruce Bruce. Not missing

a beat was Miami’s own DJ Irie who helped provide just the right mix of tunes for the

evening. The comedy show definitely left its mark this year with promise for fans to

return annually. Proceeds from the show also benefited The Chris Tucker Foundation.

11 12SUSAN TAYLOR TOOK CENTER STAGE WITH AN IMPORTANT LESSON FOR HONEY SHINE AND OVERTOWN YOUTH CENTER GIRLS

JULY 25, 2008 | A select group of young ladies from South Florida had the opportunity of a lifetime when Susan Taylor, former editorial director of ESSENCE magazine and active leader of numerous charitable and political organizations across the nation, took time out of her busy schedule to share words of encouragement. One hundred girls from the Honey Shine Mentoring Program and Overtown Youth Center gathered to hear Taylor speak at the Overtown Youth Center in Miami, Florida.

Taylor enlightened the young girls by sharing her life lessons in hopes that they would be able to incorporate her teachings into their own lives. She reiterated the importance of being an individual and the power of being in charge of your own destiny. The girls were made to understand that every problem has a solution, and it is up to them to discover the path that results in the outcome they want to achieve.

The young women, who sat motivated and eager to ask questions, listened intently as Taylor spoke. Taylor reinforced the need for mentors to help them along the way. As a mentor herself to girls across the country, Taylor encouraged each to be resourceful. Mentors can be found anywhere - a teacher, coach, minister, parents, relatives, and especially within the Honey Shine Mentoring Program family.

HONEY BUGS BECAME TINY TECHIES BUILDING ROBOTS THAT COMPETED TO WIN

AUGUST 01, 2008 | The Starbot Robotics Camp offered 11 young girls from the Honey Shine Mentoring Program the chance to put their skills to the test as they built four robots to compete on the final day of camp. Honey Bugs were divided into four groups with mentors from Starbot Robotics and built the robots throughout the week of camp.

Starbot, a local educational robotics institution that works with students across South Florida, led the camp and worked with the Honey Shine girls to inspire them to become future engineers and inventors. The Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Coconut Grove, host of Camp Honey Shine, also hosted the mechanical showdown and week of camp.

During the course of camp, each girl used practical applications of math and science, learned project management skills, and were encouraged through teamwork and imagination. The Honey Bugs were encouraged to think like engineers and inventors, and assignments encouraged the girls to believe that it only takes one idea to change the world and that idea could belong to them.

The girls, who had no prior knowledge of robotics, learned how to solder metals, about the relationship of the connection on circuit boards and other electronic parts, about design methodologies, physics, and Newton’s Law, as well as how robots incorporate electronics, motors, pneumatics, radio controls, different metals and more. The competition tested the robots’ ability to launch ping-pong balls into a bucket and the girls’ ability to control them in doing so.

We would like to thank Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart for sponsoring our girls to experience this amazing opportunity.

HONEY BUGS SHOPPED ‘TIL THEY DROPPED FOR 08-09 SCHOOL YEAR

AUGUST 23, 2008 | The Honey Bugs kicked off the 2008-2009 school year in style! Seventy young girls from the Honey Shine Mentoring Program hit the aisles on a shopping spree at Target in late August. The girls selected to participate were chosen based on their attendance and overall growth from the previous Honey Shine programming year and this summer’s Camp Honey Shine. Each girl received a $75 gift card for Target, courtesy of the Honey Shine Mentoring Program.

The shopping carts flew at the Target located on Bird Road in Miami, FL. The girls were served breakfast and then given a brief shopping orientation on how to shop smart for back to school savings. They were fully prepared with a shopping list of items to guide them in purchasing the necessities—the most popular of which were toiletries and clothing outfits.

Learning the difference between name and generic brand shopping, as well as the value of scouring sales racks and using coupons, were important lessons during this Honey Shine activity. The girls were taught how to spend their money wisely and were even given calculators to double-check their math and make sure they didn’t overspend. Honey Shine volunteers paired up with the young women to help them find the best deals. All of the young shoppers, including one young Honey Bug who was able to use every single cent of her $75 gift card, came in under their allowance.

GOLFERS HIT THE GREENS FOR A CHANCE AT ONE MILLION BUCKS

AUGUST 01, 2008 | The 5th Annual Zo’s Million Dollar Shootout took place at Trump National Golf Club in Westchester, New York. Alonzo Mourning alongside friends from the sports, entertainment, political and business worlds including City of Newark’s Mayor Cory Booker, Eric Snow (Cleveland Cavaliers), Rory Sparrow (former NBA player), Shawn Respert (former NBA player) and Brandon Williams (former NBA player), were present at the successful charity event which raised more than $225,000 in proceeds this year!

Presented by Alson Capital Partners this year, Zo’s Million Dollar Shootout has been a staple golf outing along the northeast corridor for the past five years. Tons of golfers not only came out to test their swing for the chance at one million dollars but also to support Alonzo Mourning Charities’ community initiatives.

Mourning, who has personal ties to New Jersey where he resides when not in Miami, welcomed City of Newark’s Mayor Cory Booker on the course this year. The two have partnered to spearhead a joint project in Newark, focusing on youth and education, and portions of the proceeds from this year’s Zo’s Shootout will go towards this endeavor.

Trump National Golf Club hosts Zo’s Million Dollar Shootout each year. The golf course is among the most highly regarded in the area boasting world-class facilities and a 7,291-yard par 72 golf course designed by golf course architect Jim Fazio.

Participants in the tournament not only competed for the chance to win one million dollars, but also enjoyed a complimentary gift bag with top-of-the-line golf gear, welcome breakfast reception, putting contest, round of golf, post-reception feast featuring culinary delights, awards ceremony, and a live auction with exclusive items and experiences that were up for bid.

SEPTEMBER 27, 2008 | Alonzo and Tracy visited college campuses all over the State of Florida this September to encourage students to register to vote. SEPTEMBER 2008 | Alonzo, who is also the Founder of Zo’s Fund for Life, is the new spokesman for the Miami Transplant Institute at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. There is not a better person in the community who knows firsthand that transplantation saves lives and now, in this new role, Alonzo will lend his voice and influence to build the Miami Transplant Institute into a world leader in clinical care and research.

As many of you know, Alonzo was diagnosed with focal glomerulosclerosis, a rare genetic kidney disease, during a routine pre-season team physical in September 2000. The diagnosis was made shortly after Alonzo played on the gold medal USA Olympic basketball team, also in 2000. After battling the disease with medications for three years, he finally underwent a successful kidney transplant in December 2003. Mourning eventually returned to professional basketball and with his teammates won the 2006 League Championship.

Alonzo will lead the charge for state-of-the-art care for the Institutes patients and breakthrough research that could one day eliminate the need for lifelong anti-rejection drugs. He will help to create more awareness for transplantation

and help play a key role in getting more people to consider becoming an organ donor.

Jackson Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in South Florida to perform every type of solid organ transplant. Started in 1979, the transplant program has grown into one of the largest and most comprehensive transplant centers anywhere in the world. Led by Dr. Tzakis, a pioneering surgeon in the field of transplantation, the Miami Transplant Institute performs more than 500 procedures every year. The surgeons perform dozens of kidney, liver, heart and pancreas transplants, as well as more than half of the world’s complex multi visceral transplants. The institute is ranked fifth in the nation among top transplant programs.

ALONZO IS NEW SPOKESPERSON FOR THE MIAMI TRANSPLANT INSTITUTE

ALONZO AND TRACY ENCOURAGE FLORIDIANS TO GET TO THE POLLS BY CAIT GENEREUSE | FIVE BENEFITS CHARITY PROVIDES

Giving to charity benefits yourself as much or more than it benefits those to whom you give. That reason alone should be sufficient to justify starting now. If you need more convincing, read on: 1. Giving to a charity helps make our communities better places to live by helping to provide goods and services to people who might not otherwise have access to them. When we raise the standard of living for the least able among us, we raise our own standard of living in turn. 2. What motivates you more: Having stuff or feeling good? If you chose the latter, you’re not alone. Many have found over centuries of recorded history that their ultimate satisfaction came from helping those in need. 3. Those who witness our giving are reminded that we are all interdependent on one another for our care and well-being. That reminder can have a viral effect and motivate countless others to follow your example. 4. At the very least, your gifts to charity will be rewarded, in part, by the government in the form of a reduced tax liability. Business owners can especially benefit from this if they give through their businesses. 5. Some believe that what they give to the world is returned to them threefold, sevenfold, or even tenfold! Their experiences bear out their beliefs. The only way you’ll find out is to start. Any gift to a charity is better than no gift. Start at a level you’re comfortable with now. Increase if, or more likely when, you feel able and willing to. Look at what your generosity does for others, and also observe the good that it does for you.
