Staff The Fall season is upon us and I have to admit I’m ready for the weather to cool off a bit. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the hot temperatures (that’s why I live in Florida) but that last week of 90+ degree weather we had in mid-October was just too much. Give me those 80 degree highs and 65 degree lows and life is perfect! Economy-wise, things seem to be getting a bit better. The stock market finally clawed its way back

above the 10,000 mark and here in Tampa Bay, the snow-birds are returning. I actually see some construction around town. We still need some help with the unemployment figure, but I sincerely think things are starting to crawl back to normal. The holiday shopping season is here and hope-fully that will kick-start everything. That said, if you own a small business, now is the time to advertise and tell people about yourself. Please keep NuYou Magazine in mind as we are growing every month. Our ad rates are affordable, our distribution strong and we flat out work for our customers! Thanks for the positive response we received from last month’s edition. The Halloween cover was great and we had wonderful feedback from our new “Calendar of Events” and “Restaurant Review” articles. Look for other new features in the upcoming months. I want to welcome Hess Spinal and Medical Center to the magazine. We are proud to have them in NuYou and we highly recommend their services. I hope you like this month’s magazine. We have given it a Thanksgiving theme and this is always one of my favorite holidays. Spending quality time with family and friends is what life is all about and there is no better time than Thanksgiving to make that happen! Don’t eat too much turkey, stuffing or pumpkin pie this month and have a great holiday!

SAY WHAT ???? When you are sitting at home watching television, do you get as confused as I do when those prescription drug ads come on? They all have crazy names and millions of side effects that include something like total hair loss, nose extensions and toe cramps! I’m sure these drugs do a great job but the TV ads are sometimes overwhelming. Here is a little quiz to see if you know what these drugs help fight and /or prevent .....

A = 8, B = 5, C = 7, D = 9, E = 3, F = 2, G = 6, H = 4 , I = 10, J = 1

• Did you know that good old fashioned club soda can remove stubborn stains like red

wine, chocolate and grease? Just pour it on and let it sit for 20 minutes. After the time elapses, blot the stain with a clean cloth or sponge. Club soda can also be used to make your jewelry shine like new! Put your ring or pendent in a glass fi lled with club

soda overnight and it will look professionally cleaned in the morning. The drink can also be

used to remove rust as the millions of bubbles loosen the rust and it can be blotted off easily.

Put it in a spray bottle and use it like WD40 to loosen rusted nuts and bolts. Soak your tools overnight in club soda and they will look brand new in the morning!

• In a sign of the times, “Gourmet Magazine” will cease publication after 69 years. The magazine cited falling advertising revenue as the reason. Conde Nast Publishing Company will also stop producing “Modern Bride Magazine”, “Elegant Bride Magazine” and “Cookie Magazine”. Gourmet Magazine debuted in 1940 and was one of the top food publications in the world.

• We told you what club soda can do and now here are a few tidbits regarding white vinegar.

The acetic acid in white vinegar will dissolve mineral deposits, hard water stains and soap scum. It also is proven to kill 99% of

surface bacteria and over 80% of mold. Use it in a spray bottle to clean your shower. White Vinegar will also remove pet stains ... mix the vinegar with cold water, put it into a spray bottle, shake well and saturate the area. Allow it to soak into your carpet for three minutes then blot it dry. White Vinegar

will also clean the deposits that build up inside your washing

machine. At least once a year, put a few cups of the stuff in your machine and run it (without any clothes) to get rid of any mildew and soap residue.

• Do you care if your child is overweight and fat? Most of us would answer that questions yes but here’s facts you need to know. Studies show if both parents eat high fat foods, their child is four to six times more likely to be overweight! That said, if both parents are physically active their child is four to six times more likely to also be physically active and in shape. That’s right, your child mimics what you do. Make sure you think of that the next time you drink too much or light up that cigarette! • Here’s one more goodie for you .... use mayonnaise if you get a sunburn. Yes, cool mayo will soothe the sting as it will moisturize your skin and create a protective

barrier that will shield the skin from any further irritation. The vitamin A found in mayonnaise will also exfoliate dead surface cells while its fats and proteins hydrate and smooth skin. Because of those traits, it can also be used for facials. The slippery white stuff will also help you remove that ring that is stuck on your fi nger! Last but not least, use mayo to remove tar that is on your car. The oil in the mayonnaise will loosen the tar and allow you to wipe it away after fi ve minutes of application.

* There’s a new pillow for sale that has an aloe-encapsulated cover that is quilted with wool. The aloe softens your skin while you sleep and the wool (with its antimicrobial properties) draws moisture away. The pillow also features a granulated latex core that prevents wrinkles. It sounds almost too good to be true until you see the pillow sells for $74.40. If you’re still interested, go to www.naturaworld.com for additional information.

HEAlTHY TIPS!

• Drink water ... did you know that 75% of the American population is dehydrated. Your body interprets being thirsty as hunger .... so when you drink more water you eat less food! What a smart way to lose a few pounds during the holiday season!

ConSUMER SAFETY And THE LAWThe sale and distribution of exercise and fi tness equipment is a multi-billion dollar industry. You’d be hard pressed to turn on your television and fl ip through stations without encountering at least one exercise product infomercial. While some of these fi tness devices are junk, many products on the market are well-engineered products that are manufactured by reputable companies. In either case, a product can fail and injury can occur.

When a consumer product is deemed defective and causes an injury, manufacturers and distributors can be held liable under a legal theory called “product liability.” Lawsuits that proceed on this legal theory usually favor an injured plaintiff , because standards of proof are lower. A person injured by a defective product typically need only show that the product was defective and that an injury resulted -- there is no need to prove that a manufacturer was negligent or careless. Whether a product is ordered to be recalled, or whether a company voluntarily recalls a product for replacement or repair, such recall constitutes evidence that the product was defective.

The following is merely a partial list of exercise and fi tness products that caused injury and otherwise required recall or remedy during the course of the past fi ve years:Cybex International Treadmills, Reebok International Ltd. Exercise Cycles, Stamina Products Inversion Therapy Tables, Fitness Quest Eclipse Elliptical Trainers, Icon Health & Fitness Inversion Benches, Cybex International Inc. Treadmills, Flaghouse Inc. Kidnastics Balance Beams, FreeMotion Fitness Inc. Exercise Machines, York Barbell Co. Weightlifting Bars, Vision Fitness Treadmills, Fitness Quest Gazelle® Freestyle Crosstrainers and Crosstrainer Pro Gliders, Endurance Treadmills, Hoist Exercise Benches, Mini-Trampolines, Nautilus Inc. Bowfl ex Ultimate 2 Home Gyms, Performance Inc. Bicycle

Resistance Trainers, Nashbar Direct Bicycle Resistance Trainers, abc distributing, LLC. Pilates Balls, The Lakeside Collection Pilates Balls, Delta Cycle Corp. Picasso Two-Bike Folding Racks, ICON Health & Fitness, Inc. Epic T60 Treadmill, Sportcraft Treadmills, Nautilus Inc. Exercise Benches, Fitness Quest Inc. Ab Lounge Exercise Products, The Nautilus Group Bowfl ex Power Pro and Ultimate Fitness Machines, Jumpking Chrome Dumbbells, Sportcraft Tredex Treadmills, , Fitness Quest Inc.”Total Gym” Exercise Machines, Horizon Fitness Treadmills, ICON Hiker Exercise Equipment, Minoura Bicycle Indoor Training Stands, ICON Health & Fitness Inc. Exercise Gliders, Diversifi ed Products Megafl ex Exerciser, Schwinn Xr-5 Exercisers, Exer-Climber Promo-Stepper, The Stomach Eliminator.

Even if a product is not defective, a company may be liable if it negligently fails to address a recurring problem. Once a company is placed on notice of a problem—normally by receiving reports of injuries and complaints by consumers—the company has a duty to make reasonable eff orts to correct the problem.

Sometimes this duty requires repair of the product, replacement of the product, or enhanced instruction on safe use of the product to consumers.

In April of this year, for example, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported a recall of rubber fi tness balls manufactured by New York-based EB Brands. These fi tness balls were sold under the “Bally Total Fitness”, “Everlast”, “Valeo” and “Body Fit Fitness Balls” brands. Through February 2009, EB brands received 47 reports of the exercise balls

“unexpectedly bursting, including reports of a fracture, and multiple bruises.” The company responded by issuing updated instructions on how to safely infl ate the ball and researched a change in the design of the product. This is a circumstance where the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission eff ectively served to make exercise equipment safer.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is an independent federal regulatory agency created to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injuries and deaths associated with some 15,000 types of consumer products. An important part of this mission is to inform the public about product hazards. CPSC uses various means to inform the public.

CPSC’s toll-free Hotline, 1-800-638-2772, is a source of public information that is available 24 hours a day. The Hotline can be used to fi nd out whether a product has been recalled, learn how to return a recalled product or arrange for its repair, obtain information on what to look for when buying consumer products, obtain information on how to use a consumer product safely, obtain information about ordering CPSC publications, report an unsafe product, and report a product-related injury.

Numerous publications, press releases and product safety alerts are available from the CPSC’s Offi ce of Information and Public Aff airs. You can submit a publication request to U.S. CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION, 4330 East West Highway, Bethesda, MD 20814. This information 24 hours a day via this web site (www.cpsc.gov).

All consumers should be encouraged to use these resources to learn more about any fi tness equipment they are considering purchasing. Education and information can reduce the number of injuries occurring during exercise.

I love my family and this is a very interesting time for us. I have two sons and they have given me three fantastic grandchildren. My grandson and my two granddaughters are the most important things in the world to me. We must be doing something right because at press time, both of my daughter-in-laws are once again pregnant! Yes, I’m going to have more kids to spoil and I am super excited! However, I have the easy part (spoiling the grand-kids doesn’t take a lot of work) but women don’t have it that easy. Being pregnant is very diffi cult and it completely changes the way a mother eats, sleeps, works, travels and lives. It even changes the shape of their bodies, during and after the child is born. I’m sure my daughter-in-laws are not the only ones out there that are pregnant and that is why I wanted to write this article. If you are “with child” here are a few things you need to view and remember .... A) If you drink alcohol and/or smoke, do your very best to cut down or stop. Most doctor’s want you to absolutely quit alcohol consumption and smoking. Remember everything that goes into your body goes into your baby’s body. If you can stop ... please stop.

B) Try to control your overall weight gain. Doctors say that the perfect goal is to gain between 15-20 total pounds. You want to do what you can to keep your baby’s weight as low as possible. This will help in delivery and make it easier for you to lose weight after the birth. You don’t

want to do anything to hurt your baby’s health, but you also don’t need to eat that full jar

of pickles and two quarts of chocolate chip ice cream every night!

C) Exercise is important but it should be done in moderation. You do not want to exercise to exhaustion and you do not want to over-do anything. There are great benefi ts for pregnant women exercising but be watchful of your heart rate, prolonged periods of motionless standing and your overall oxygen intake. Benefi ts include less nausea, increased energy levels, shorter labor and faster recovery time, prevention of swelling and back pain, healthier babies and (here’s the best one) birth usually

occurs 5-7 days earlier when you exercise!

d) Last but not least, be aware of your emotions. It is diffi cult to be pregnant and have a baby. You are uncomfortable, your back hurts, your feet and legs are swollen, your body has morphed into something completely diff erent. We all care about you and your well being. Most families and co-workers realize you are under a lot of stress. Do

your best to recognize those times when your hormones take over. Remember the stress and anger you feel also transfers to your child. When you are upset, so is the

baby. Take a moment, take a deep breath, take a walk, count to 10, or even meditate for

a moment. Do what ever you need to do relieve that stress and evaluate the situation. It will make

life easier for you... your baby... and everyone around you.

Let’s talk about color ……….. Lip color is coming in big time. I know we normally use light pinks and natural colors but …. big hair, cascade curls, red lips and very dark colors are here! Don’t be afraid to use wild colors and do things that stray from your normal, everyday look. Now is the time to try diff erent colors and styles!

This is a great lip tip: apply your lipstick with a small brush. Start in the middle of your bottom lip and work your way out, do the same technique on the upper lip. There is a product called, Aquaphor Healing Ointment (found in most drug stores for around $6) that makes your lips really smooth. Don’t forget about waxing your upper lip and eye brows. You don’t want to have your face look great but look like a hairy man! Make it a habit to get your waxing and hair done as one appointment, that way you always look good!

I also want to translate some of the key terms us hair stylists use:

1) FoILS- These are used throughout the hair when we apply bleach or color. They are also used when doing low-lights in diff erent sections and patterns. They keep the hair separated and allow us to treat certain areas without touching other areas.

2) BALAYAGE - This is a French term where we hand paint color on to the hair to create a more natural look.

3) SInGLE PRoCESS - One shade of color to change or cover root color.

4) doUBLE PRoCESS- The 1st step is to lighten or darken base color and the 2nd step is where we add highlights.

If you get your hair colored, you should know these terms. There are many ways to use various colors, especially with all the highlights and lowlights that are seen today in all walks of life!

Finally, let’s discuss what you should do if you get a new haircut and don’t like it! Immediately talk to your stylist. I know if I am doing a major change, I always leave the hair a little longer so I can adjust your haircut. Short

hair takes more work and with dry, colder weather …. all hair is hard to work with. You might have to go a little shorter to fi nd the look you want. Fall styles include fl irty ruffl es, hot hues and sparkling sequins with textured full hair. Enjoy the freaky darker colors of Fall and Winter!

Irene’s European Day Spa has pampering down to a science! Want to luxuriate in an opulent body wrap and facial? How about a relaxing massage? Or would you like a non-surgical face lift with micro dermabrasion? You can have it all at this full service salon. There are six professionals offering a wide variety of services in a very relaxing ambiance. Stress relief with a spa experience to renew your body, soothes the soul, sets the mind free and the spirits soaring. Irene’s European Day Spa and salon specializes in skin care, but offers every indulgence from facials to reflexology, massage, hair care, nails, aromatherapy, teenage packages as well as day spa packages and much, much more! Irene Gott, the spa owner, says she became interested in skin care after moving to Florida 20 years ago. “I had several salons up north and

noticed that my own dry skin was a constant source of concern. I studied European skin care and found some excellent European products. So I decided to concentrate on skin care and other spa oriented services here in Clearwater,” She confided.

It was a good decision! A consummate professional , Irene is a certified Aesthetician and also holds a number of other professional certifications. She notes that the interest in skin care is booming, thanks particularly to the aging baby boomers with the desire and the money to improve their looks.”I think that it’s a combination of better products and new technology. It’s amazing what you can do for the skin now’,

Irene marvels. For example, the spa offers new Vitamin C technology that penetrates down to the dermis (the lower layer of the skin) and builds up the skin’s immune system. The result is a natural protection against brown spots. Another example is the use of imported mud from the Dead Sea for wraps and facials that pump up the collagen in the skin and give you a healthy younger look. How? Intense Pulse Light Therapy increases collagen production by 50%, thereby reducing wrinkles. Circulation is improved, providing a healthier skin tone, and the skin’s moisture increase which fills out the skin.. It also restores the skin’s natural cellular(collagen) activity, reduce melanin production (which causes age spots), and promotes nutritional elements that exist within the skin. Because it plumps the skin it’s like giving yourself a collagen injection, but with your own collagen. ABC-TV, Dermatology Times, Day Spa Magazine and Web MD Health have all reported improvements in all aspects of the skin in subjects treated with Intense Pulse Light Therapy. Irene notes that bridal parties often enjoy a full day of luxury at her salon. Our stylists specialize in bridal hairdos and skin care for the bride. Our cosmetic artist specializes in fabulous makeovers for brides, teens and models. She also notes that both genders are interested in looking their best and reminds customers that the holidays are just around the corner. “Now’s the time to take advantage of our Couples Pampering Spa Packages”, she says. “You can enjoy any of our regular packages, or mix and match any three to suit your need.” Irene says, “Give yourself or a loved one the gift of self indulgence of our special Pampering Package at Irene’s European Day Spa and Salon. Just call 727-726-5422. You can also visit www.irenegottsdayspa.com Irene’s European Day Spa is located at 2454 McMullen-Booth Rd, Bldg. B Ste. 403, Clearwater, Fl. . Hours of service: Monday and evenings by appointment only. Tues – Fri 10- 6, Sat. 9 – 5.

Brrrr, for a few days last month it was actually chilly and I found myself looking for long sleeve shirts, long pants,

closed toe shoes and socks. Yes, the days of shorts, tank tops and sandals seem to be gone for a while as the fall and

winter months are here. That means it’s time to start building your fall/winter wardrobe. Most fall outfi ts use the predominate colors of black, white, brown, tan and gray. Other colors such as orange, green and red are used as accents. Yellows, blues, purples and bright patterns are usually used in the spring and summer and not during the cooler months. The nice thing about fall and winter is the fact that you can mix and match many items and make the most out of your wardrobe. For you ladies, a basic fall/winter wardrobe should include a casual and workplace mixture of pants, pant-suits and skirts. Select two pairs of slacks that will work for both work and play. One pair should preferably be black and the other a gray or camel. These colors go with almost everything and gives you great opportunities to mix in various tops. The same goes for your pant-suits and skirts. If you work in a cold environment, make sure you have a few sweaters. If you are in an offi ce and your toes are always cold, make sure you have closed-toe shoes or nice boots. Stay basic and add color with your tops and accessories. Guys, your wardrobe depends on your employment. Many men have to wear uniforms .... some can wear jeans and t-shirts .... others nice pants and dress shirts .... while many put on suits ev-eryday. If you do have the choice, the same basic color selections are used for males as females in the colder months. Try to stick with blacks, tans and grays when it comes to dressing up and don’t be afraid to use color with your accessories (including ties). Just like the ladies, you want to have the basics at hand and let things be easily interchangeable. I know many of you are upset because living here in

Florida we have the opportunity to “dress down” and wear fl ip fl ops, cut off shorts and tank tops almost

everyday but don’t worry .... in three or four months the weather will be back in the eighties and you can break them out again! Have a great month .... kisses and hugs!

So what are fashion no no’s for grown women. There are diff erent rules for diff erent women, whether you are young or old. There are women over 50 even 60 that have the shape and attitude

to pull off pretty much any hairstyle, make up choices as well as their fashion. Sexy, classy, and stylish can be done at the same time and at any age, as long as it is done correctly. You may think age is the issue, but realistically physical build and personality are. By following a non-existent “ Rule Book of Aging Women”, usually causes a woman to age herself. If a woman takes care of herself and is physically fi t, and carries herself with poise, she can easily at any age wear funky jewelry, and a pair of leopard print stilettos. Mature women that do this are way sexier than a 25 year old in the same outfi t that is out of shape or that is not confi dent with her self. As far as no no’s for grown women goes, a grown

woman should NEVER wear anything that makes her look shapeless and older than she is. Grown women can wear whatever they like, as long as THEY like it, and not following some crazy trend. Dimensional color and funky highlights, even off the wall jewelry designs are more than acceptable on older women. Most of the time older women are a breath of fresh air, as they have gotten over caring about what is or is not supposedly acceptable for them to wear. Older women you should embrace the fashion world. With a little advice and carefully planning, there is no reason you can’t be a great fashionista. Just because you are more mature and might even be a grand mother does not mean you have to dress like your grandmother. Embrace fashion and have fun with it.

SEASoN-LESS FASHIoN No matter the season, there are certain pieces of clothing that can be used year round without worry. When it comes to cocktail parties and weddings you can never go wrong with that little black dress, even if it is sleeveless. A perfect Tee is also a great piece

of clothing that can get you through any season. In summer wear it by itself, as the weather cools dress the tee up by layering with your favorite vest, sweater or blazer. If you are looking for a travel friendly style choose a jersey knit dress. Key hint with a jersey knit dress is to choose styles that have plenty of drape so you won’t cling in odd places. Maybe you have a fi ne gauge cardigan. This can be worn in spring with a lightweight sweater or for cooler weather layer with a thermal turtleneck. Last but not least you can never go wrong with a great pair of boot-cut jeans. Nothing is more wearable year round. Try to look for a trend-proof style though; trends will limit your wear.

Every woman, mature even young wants to hide something on her body, which she is unhappy with. Could be you have larger

thighs, bigger breasts, or in hindsight you’re a little larger. A little knowledge of how to create an optical illusion and your problem areas vanish. So lets say that you are a little bottom heavy. If your hips are wider than your shoulders, with round thighs, you have a classic pear-shaped body. You can be dressed in a snap by remembering to highlight the positives, a shapely waist, delicate upper body as well as beautiful arms and shoulders. For your pants, shorts and skirts, avoid anything to tight. A-line skirts that fall knee length are great as they draw attention away from

problem areas. Mini skirts are a bad idea, as they will accentuate heavy thighs. The waist on pants should fall below the natural waistline for a better fi t. Most Flattering cut is a straight leg or slightly boot-cut. Stay away from patterned or light colored pants, especially ones with big cargo pockets, or excessive zippers near the hip area. For shorts be careful, for workout and casual dress they should be of lightweight fabric and looser fi tting. Side stripes are always a slimming feature for shorts. You will also want to pay close attention when choosing tops. You want to stay away from tight as well as too baggy. The looser tops will make you look large all over and the tight tops will make you look out of proportion. Fitted, not skintight T-shirts (something slightly stretchy) and button front tops, as well as anything with a collar or V-neck and turtle necks bring attention to the face, which is always a good thing. Make sure that jackets and blazers never hit at the widest point of your hips, meaning just above or below the hip line. To create vertical lines always wear jackets open. This creates a slimming eff ect. Now to the woman that is a little top heavy. The body that is usually softer around the middle and has heavier breast with more narrow hips and slimmer legs, is referred to as an apple shape. You can make the most of an apple shaped fi gure by showing off

great legs and great cleavage. When choosing tops opt for fabric that skims the body preferably knits and woven with a stretch for a better fi t. Tops that are too tight play up large breast too much. While tops that are too baggy just adds weight. V-neck’s, mock necks and collared shirts always create a fl attering neckline. Play up nice cleavage with peak, not Dolly Parton style tough. A pretty laced cami showing under a jacket or top is very fl attering. You want to stay away from full sleeves or puff y sleeves. When choosing bottom’s keep things in balance. An A-line shirt will balance a top-heavy fi gure by giving you the illusion of a waist and more of an hourglass fi gure. Waistline on pants slightly lower than the natural waistline. Never choose pleats, a fl at front is the preferable choice. You can never go wrong with a classic fi ve-pocket jean. Front pockets on your jeans hide a tummy problem, while back pockets can help defi ne a fl atter rear common to top-heavy women. Never choose anything to tight. Pencil skirts and skin tight jeans only accentuate top heavy fi gures, choose skirts that fall above the knee an inch or will really play up nice legs. Try to avoid one-piece clothing it can be very tricky. Sleeveless, black sheath, soft princess seamed dresses or a strapless dress and corseted top are always going to be your fi rst choice.

Try to avoid one-piece clothing it can be very tricky. Sleeveless, black sheath, soft princess seamed dresses or a strapless dress and corseted top are always going to be your fi rst choice.

I attended a “Meet the Author” program at the Safety Harbor Public Library specifi cally to learn more about Container Gardening. Barbara Barker, the author of “Container Gardening for Health: The 12 Most Important Fruits and Vegetables for Your Organic Garden” is a Master Gardener who resides in Live Oak, Florida and has 5 acres of gardening space. In 1997, her then 4 year-old son began having unexplained seizures which caused Barbara and her husband to reduce any chemical impact they could think of around the house. This included stopping pest control, removal of carpeting & old paint and a great interest in organic gardening. In 1999, they purchased “Gourmet Gardening”, a small seed company. Do you know which produce has the highest levels of pesticides?

The “Dirty Dozen” are:Peaches Celery Sweet Peppers Nectarines Apples SpinachStrawberries PearsLettuce CherriesGrapes Potatoes

Gardening should be going full steam ahead in November. You can use regular potting soil which works fi ne; for even better results, amend the soil with compost or other organic matter. Choose containers that you like for the area of your home. Buy plants and seeds (check out “Seeds forChange.com) labeled as good to grow in Florida. We all should be using rain barrel for our watering needs! Try to get your containers 6-8 hours of sun a day. Now is the time for cool weather crops such as lettuce, carrots, cabbage, brussel sprouts, strawberries, radishes, citrus trees (love that Meyer Lemon!), caulifl ower and collards. Green peppers are perennials and can be grown here year round. You’ll need to wait a bit to plant spinach, since it needs cooler soil to germinate. Herbs are another great container plant to grow. Find out which herbs do best in Florida online at edis.ifas.ufl .edu/VH020.

Try this mini-greenhouse to plant your seeds: use re-cycled clear clamshell fl at (previously held 1 lb. of Boston lettuce or bean sprouts). It holds 3-cell packs. Remove cover after seeds sprout. Never fertilize seedlings! Another good biodegradable seed starter idea: Take 1 page of newspaper,

fold in half longways and wrap around salsa or jam jar to create a form. Use small piece of paper (masking) tape to hold in place. Then close up bottom, as if gift wrapping and secure with 1 more small piece of paper tape. Ease off salsa or jam jar and you have a planter! I have 6 of these in a clear plastic tray (so I can water once a week) on my windowsill in the kitchen and all my green pepper seedlings have sprouted up now. Fun container options for strawberries are

hanging planters and terracotta “strawberry pots” with the pockets built into the sides. Adequate drainage is essential when growing strawberries. Excellent container placement would be inside your birdcaged pool area or on your deck. I highly recommend Barbara Barker’s book on Container Gardening. There’s so much more---what to do about any pests, staggering plantings so you’re not inundated with too many at once, growing cycle times, cycle of rest, etc. Barbara’s website is www.gourmetgardener.com. Remember, gardening can do more

than provide us with treats for the table and a pretty yard. Researchers at the School of Holistic Studies at John F. Kennedy University near San Francisco say it also lifts depression, releases stress and anxiety plus strengthens the immune system. Go get busy!

Mixxers is a bar .... no Mixxers is a restaurant .... no Mixxers is both! Located at 3430 East Lake Road in Palm Harbor, Mixxers is a great place that has fantastic food! Featuring the largest air-conditioned outdoor patio in Pinellas County, Mixxers is open 11am - 2am seven days a week with a great ladies night every Thursday where females drink free from 9pm - midnight.

Along with the multiple televisions, karaoke, NFL package and the largest selection of liquor this side of the Pecos, Mixxers features a fantastic food menu. Great salads, burgers, grouper sandwiches, wings, philly cheese steaks, french dip, quesadillas, nachos and burgers are just a few of the delectable choices. I had the shepherd pie and NuYou salesman Dino had the fish & chips. Both dishes were delicious and they come highly recommended! Tony has owned and operated Mixxers since 1996 and he is quite proud of his establishment. “We are a fun place that serves good food. We cater to people from 21 to 90 years old and we offer something for everyone,” he said. “Don’t forget about our Sunday NFL buffet and remember that every dish is cooked to order,” he added. Stop by Mixxers and you will have not only a good time, you will have a good meal!

TWO SIMPlE RECIPES FOR ALL OF THAT lEFT oVER TURKEYWe all know that you can have only so many turkey sandwiches after the big day. So, here are two simple ways to bring the “nu” back to your bird. Both of these recipes are diabetic diet approved but the turkey roll-up (with it’s pizza crust)is not necessarily the lowest in carbs. This roll-up contains 26 grams of carbs, but

it also has 20 grams of protein, which is good. While the soup is very low in sugar and carbs, you want to make sure your chicken broth is of the reduced sodium variety. Sodium is salt and salt is a known reason for water retention. Good luck with this month’s recipes and thank you for all of the positive feed back!

For both of these recipes, add what ever vegetables you want! Looking for a little more fi ber, throw in some broccoli.

QUICK TIP!

INGREDIENTS:1 13.8 oz. package refrigerated pizza dough4 oz. thinly sliced turkey1 cup low fat shredded Mozzarella cheese

1 1/2 cup loose-pack frozen pepper stir-fry vegetables (yellow, green and red peppers and onions)1/2 Ounce of milk

dIRECTIonS:1. On a lightly fl oured surface roll out the pizza dough to approx a 13 x 10 inch rectangle. Layer turkey, half of the cheese, then the pepper and onion mixture followed by the rest of the cheese within a half inch from the edges. Starting from one of the longer sides, roll into a spiral and pinch the ends so that it seals it.

2. Place loaf, seam side down on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Brush evenly with milk and slice shallow slices in the top to vent.

3. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing.

Optional: Serve with warm pizza or pasta sauce or a light ranch dressing as a dip.

Check back next month for another healthy alternative to the everyday dinner. If you would like to submit a recipe for consideration send it with complete instructions to [email protected] - The idea behind this monthly column is to provide a healthy alternative and to make sure it’s easy for an every day cook, like myself. So, keep in mind your dish will be prepared by me before we print it to ensure its practicality.

HEARTY TURKEY Roll-UPServes: 6 Prep time: 25 min. Bake time: 25 min. Stand: 10 min..

You can also switch up the meat and cheeses. A ham and cheddar with broccoli roll-up is just as yummy.

FACT OR FICTIoN ABOUT OUR TURKEY DINNER! Vigorous activity and high expectations all in preparation of that turkey dinner for thanksgiving, only to be rewarded by the inevitable drowsiness afterwards and the need to sleep. Myth or fact that the turkey dinner puts you to sleep! Years of non scientific debate at the dinner table or an old wives tale suggests that it’s the turkey rather than the inebriation or the heavy pumpkin pie that is the culprit of all your drowsiness and the quick ending of the thanksgiving festivities. Real scientific evidence has proven that an amino acid by the name of L-Tryptophan can be converted in the brain to another protein called serotonin and then into melatonin. Melatonin can induce sleep and in fact this effect is actually used in modern medicine to help people with sleep problems. Interestingly, since it is well known that there is a high content of L-Tryptophan in turkey, it has also been suggested that this may be the real cause for all

your drowsiness after thanksgiving dinner. The truth is slightly different – first of all – other meats and dairy products have comparable amounts of L-Tryptophan but none are enough to cause drowsiness. Perhaps more likely is the common occurrence of increased drowsiness after any large meal. These very large meals cause a surge of insulin release into the bloodstream which then causes an overcorrection and so a slight dip in the sugar (glucose) level in the blood. This dip in blood glucose can be accompanied by drowsiness and the need for a nap. This is also called postprandial hypoglycemia induced drowsiness.or postprandial coma (postprandial meaning – after a meal).

Whilst there are several other plausible explanations, it is probably safe to say that the turkey is off the hook,

and the benefit of this drowsiness is to help your body digest all the excess in take of food or your

excuse to avoid the crazy drama your once removed cousins (for a reason) bring to

the table. Wishing you a fine thanksgiving

for 2009, eat sensibly and take this opportunity to honor the reason for

this celebration in the true tradition of our forefathers and give thanks to

those around us and for all that we have – this too is wellness.

Fat is an essential part of our diet but being fat is not! This is a nation in paradox: over 65% of the country is overweight, 33% is obese and we have an unprecedented growth in obesity in children yet we are a fat phobic nation. How can this happen? Fat Phobia - the fear of fat because fats kill – is all pervasive in our society but it is really our ignorance about fat that is the real killer! Many people feel that the fat free diet is the right answer to all of our overweight problems and that we will live healthier but nothing is further from the truth! Eating the right kind of fat is essential to a healthy life and the overall percentage of fat in our diet should be between 30% to 40% (40% carbohydrates and 20% protein). The reason for this becomes really clear when you know what fat does in our body:

Table 1:• Critical for brain development in growing children• Supports the immune function• Important in the production of hormones• Required in energy production• Stabilizes every single cell in the body, particularly cell membranes• Transports critical elements in the blood including vitamins and cholesterol• Important in circulation There are many other functions but the consumption of essential fatty acids (fats that our body can only obtain through diet) also results in the following:

Table 2• Better energy level • Improved stamina • Improved recovery time after exercise• Smoother skin • Improves acnes and certain other skin problems • Help prevents leaking intestines and improves digestion • Transports cholesterol in the blood preventing it from clogging blood vessels • Makes blood less sticky • Lowers blood pressure • Mood elevator • Improves ability to deal with stress • Stabilizes the heart beat and prevents arrhythmias • Protect dna from damage• Transports minerals • Brain will not function without essential fatty acids• Improved athletic performance has been scientifically proven Cyclists who maxed out at 60 - 80 km per day improved performance up to 120 km per day and runner improved from 90 miles to 146 miles per week with efa consumption So what is the truth about fats - which fats have the license to kill and which ones are for your health?

For your health: The essential fats, for living healthy include linolenic and linoleic acids – and you can find these names on food labels. In the right ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 – our bodies will find the best balance it needs.

License to kill: The killer fats are the fats that have been processed to improve their shelf life, the taste, color and customer appeal. These are often trans fats and hydrogenated fats, and commonly found in breads, cakes, candies, cookies, crackers, pancake mixes, instant soups, chocolate, desserts, chips, convenience and junk foods, peanut butter to name a few!

Any type of fat that is subjected to excessive heat, like deep frying, and especially the healthy fats, will create fatty acids that actually become very toxic to the body and therefore must be completely avoided.

Excessive hard fat – the saturated fat that is found in pork, beef and lamb as well as dairy products, leads to more fat than the body can handle. The killer fats will contribute to heart attacks, strokes, impaired circulation, cancer, impaired insulin function, impaired cell membranes and overall fat metabolism, joint problems and birth defects.

Scientific evidence: Truth is – with all the scientific evidence surrounding fat – as a culture, we still got it wrong with the climbing obesity, child obesity and sky rocketing health care cost and the new bills taking many obesity issues into law. If there is a need for reform – it is a personal one for the sake of your own health!

So ask yourself: What is your fat risk?• Low fat diet• Excessive hard fats (meats, dairy)• Wrong ratio of omega 3 to 6• Processed fats – trans fats, hydrogenated fats, • Lack of exercise

I tell friends and clients that these are the best of times. Never before in the history of humanity have we had such access to so much

spiritual information and so many healing techniques and modalities. Some say the veil is lifting. Others claim that a shift is coming. Personally, I take this opportunity to create my present and my future by focusing on a deeper connection with myself and the universe at this very moment. Now. For those of us who resonate with past lives, this is a time to celebrate, to rejoice in our very own modes of worship and being. Tortured and burned at the stake for spiritual convictions? Persecuted for your practices and beliefs? Trapped in the dogma that ran over your karma? Been there, done that. It’s time to blossom into all that we truly are. It’s time for our souls to recognize that we are in a gentler mode of evolution.

Most of my life was spent in sadness, with moments of joy interspersed here and there and then back to the gloom and doom that was my existence. I tried filling the void with beliefs, companionship and recognition, only to find that the pursuit of these distractions often left me emptier in the end. I was a devotee, a femme fatale, a misunderstood and starving artist. These labels weighed heavy and turned out to be quite ineffective in quenching a deeper thirst. They didn’t do much for my quality of life either. I began asking the Universe for my own tools. I spent too much time and effort seeking other’s advice and visions which often left me even more confused and restless than before. I prayed for my own means to connect deeply, honestly. It was then that Spiritual Response Therapy entered my life. It made sense, it worked, and I used it for my own benefit. I had no idea I would eventually be offering my services as a facilitator of this healing process. All I wanted was to change my life and there was so much more that needed

to be better. Then someone said: “As you help others heal, you heal yourself.” SRT is a psychic-spiritual method that uses universal energies and your Higher Self to research and heal past life traumas and subconscious blocks and, like in Reiki, the practitioner serves as a channel for this divine healing. Through a series of charts, lower vibration energies and programs that keep the Soul from experiencing life to its fullest potential, are identified and cleared. This healing modality can help with harmonizing relationships, goals, fears, recurrent dreams and so much more. It may be just what your soul’s been waiting for. As I experience a much happier existence I feel blessed and honored to be a part of this gentle and effective spiritual process. May every day of your life be filled with great joy and illumination. Better yet, I wish you joy and illumination right… now.

What Is It? How does It Work? When I introduce my comfortable childbirth program to women, they ask, “How is it possible to be comfortable? Labor and delivery mean PAIN!” Yes, women emphasize the last word, but I quickly eliminate it from their vocabulary and focus on the word “COMFORT.” The truth is, childbirth creates a natural state of ecstasy that is life transforming. Utilizing self-hypnosis and deep relaxation techniques magnifi es that state and creates comfort before, during, and after the wonderful birthing journey. What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a natural state of heightened, focused attention best achieved through physical relaxation. You do not sleep. Your mind is alert and always in control. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and unlocks your own inner intelligence to allow desired changes leading to enhanced control over the body’s responses. Most anyone can be hypnotized, even teenagers and children. Each person responds diff erently and goes into a state of trance appropriate for the individual and the situation. Learning self-hypnosis and other important strategies generally takes several sessions; a session may last 60 to 120 minutes depending on the work to be done. The American Medical Association accepts the therapeutic use of hypnotherapy, and many scientifi c studies have revealed the benefi ts of hypnosis. What do Moms-to-Be learn? How do they use self-hypnosis? Moms-to-Be begin my Comfortable Childbirth Education Program at any point up to Week 30. The earlier pregnant women learn how to create comfort by using the techniques and tools taught in the program, the easier it is to use them during the birthing experience. While in my classes, Moms-to-Be transform negative thoughts and beliefs by talking about childbirth and creating positive and joyful expectations. New terminology for the journey becomes paramount; for example, “contraction” becomes “pressure.” She also learns self-hypnosis and progressive relaxation techniques to assist her in focusing, relaxing, and releasing fear which will assist in creating positive thoughts and emotions. Learning and using the “Comfort Tools” and techniques for any uncomfortable physical moment or experience before the baby arrives easily empowers women

to be ready for the actual birthing journey. Daily, Moms-to-Be take time to practice self-hypnosis. Repetition of this exercise assists the unconscious mind to make necessary changes in the body. Visualization is another key element of self-hypnosis. With creative visualization and mental imagery, women also connect with their babies and prepare their bodies’ muscles for the journey. Childbirth is a journey, a climb; it’s work and each turn in the journey requires deep focus. The Partner serves an invaluable role in Mom-to-Be’s achieving the optimum state of focus and deep relaxation. The partners rehearse and practice many times before the due date to ensure Mom-to-Be will automatically reach the optimum state of relaxation when the real birthing journey begins.Hypnosis WoRKS for Childbirth!Self-hypnosis taught in my Comfortable Childbirth Education Program is a welcome addition to information learned in other childbirth education classes. Hypnosis off ers many benefi ts including the following:• helps minimize pain and pressure • prepares the body’s muscles• empowers the mother-to-be• improves emotional well-being• may reduce the length of labor

• releases stress, fear and anxiety• may reduce the need for drugs• triggers the body’s relaxation response• helps ensure rapid postnatal recovery• And much more!!!

One of my clients wrote me after she delivered her baby: “The hypnosis for birthing worked as far as I’m concerned… After the birth [my husband] was the fi rst in line to say how easy it was. It was more emotional, and he was there for that part, concentrating on his new baby girl because there was no pain for his loving wife.” Another client told me that one of her affi rmations for childbirth was, “This is going to be easy.” After she gave birth, she asked me to tell other women, “It most defi nitely was.” If you are interested in exploring the wonderful benefi ts of hypnosis for a joyful birthing journey, consult with a Certifi ed Hypnotherapist who specializes in creating comfortable childbirth.

As children we whirl, we twirl, we like to hang upside down and spin in circles…. Kids love movement because it makes them feel good, the same can be true for adults and it can keep us young and feeling wonderful. According to the teachings of Iyengar Yoga, being upside down such as Handstand also offers a wide range of physical benefits. “Reversing gravity” is believed to give your vital organs a much-needed rest, improve circulation, respiration, along with elimination, and increase concentration and mental clarity. Handstand also provides the bone-strengthening benefits of weight-bearing exercise to the wrists, fingers, elbows, arms, and shoulders, which may help to prevent osteoporosis. Inverting also gives your heart a break! The baro-receptors (pressure receptors) of your cardiovascular system are located in the blood vessels on each side of your neck. When you invert, the pressure measured there increases. The increased pressure triggers a signal to the heart to stop working so hard! Since blood easily flows to the brain when your head is down, the heart doesn’t need to create so much pressure--blood pressure that is. It can relax! So...you can give your heart a break by being upside down. Or just position yourself so your head is lower than your heart. Having your head lower than your heart is a widely accepted definition of being inverted. That means you can bend over to pick your socks up off the floor and that counts as an inversion. While you’re doing it, why not pause for several breaths and let the benefits of inversion accrue to you? Inversions can be as simple as a forward fold or more involved such as a head or hand stand, no matter how you do it, being upside down works on many aspects of the body, even

including our lymphatic system. The latest research shows that being upside down daily for 3 to 11 min. can even return your metabolism to that of a teenager- now, who couldn’t benefit from that!

HoroscopesSCoRPIo - oct. 24-nov. 21

Your month is getting off to a pretty intense start! Yep, you are into your physical fi tness

and it is clearly into you. You are a real powerhouse! Enjoy this terrifi c turn of events. But, don’t do anything too rash. Remember: A daily workout at medium power is better than all-out once a week. But you knew that! You may have to deal with an unexpected setback. Don’t forget to keep up the good work!

SAGITTARIUS - nov. 22-dec. 21Dreaming is good. Day-dreaming is good. Day-dreaming about getting

in shape for so many hours that you don’t have any time left to

actually work out isn’t so great. So give yourself plenty of downtime, but don’t give yourself so much downtime that you never get up and out of bed. If you aren’t sick, you should workout. Period. You end the month feeling fantastic. Fi-nally seeing the ideal in yourself?

CAPRICoRn - dec. 22-Jan. 19Make a decision about the best approach you can take to your health this month. Get

a plan together -- are you going to focus on your strength training? On your diet? On fl exibility? Once you’ve decided, get going. Don’t spend an-other moment thinking about it, when you could be doing it. You work out hard and you play hard and you work

hard and you sleep great!

AQUARIUS - Jan. 20-Feb. 18You need to feel needed more than most

people do. In fact, you could even say that it’s essential to your health and well-being. Feed your deep need to help (or risk feeling less than stellar). The further you go with it, the better you’ll feel, emotional-ly and mentally. Start out by volunteer-ing at a soup kitchen, or helping needy families organize their expenses.

PISCES - Feb.19-Mar. 20You have a lot of strong points. You’ve been working out for a while,

after all! But for you to really live up to your potential, you’re going to need to home in on the things that you’ve been ignoring. Are you working out well but not eating great? Eating well but not sleeping enough? Iron out the details. The more balanced you can be, the better things will go

for you.

ARIES - Mar. 21 – Apr. 19If you’re feeling slow

and sluggish on the best thing to do is go for a nice

easy walk. Or hit the pool. You do have to get your body mov-ing. Stretch your limbs. Get that blood fl owing. You’ll feel a lot better, guaran-teed. You could be having the opposite problem mid-month: You’re feeling totally revved up. The solution is the same. Run. Swim. Jog. Bike. Get your blood pumping (again) and you’ll calm

those jangled nerves.

TAURUS - Apr. 20-May 20The best way to

counteract moodiness? Exercise, of course! A sure-fi re quick fi x if you’re

feeling up and down and all turned around is to hit the gym.

Long term, though, you really want to make sure you’re eating right and sleeping enough. There’s nothing like too much caff eine and sugar and too little sleep to play havoc with your emotions. So be sure to workout. It’s good for you.

GEMInI - May 21-June 21Your super-high energy is

going to propel you out of the offi ce and straight to the gym. What could be better? After all, at

the gym, you’ll recharge and rejuvenate. You’ll go back out into the world with just as much super high energy as you had going in! Try something new this month. Climbing? Skating? Dancing? You got it. Go for it! Change your body and you’ll change your life: This is just true.

CAnCER - June 22-July 22You don’t have to get an expert opinion every time you want to work out. But

on the 1st, if you’re going to do something new that’s particu-larly challenging, like rock climbing or acrobatics, it’s a good idea to go to an expert. Ask them to show you the ropes and assess your fi tness levels before you commit to a weekend in the mountains or a three-day tumbling seminar.

LEo - July 23-Aug. 22If you’ve been doing a good job maintaining your fi tness

routine lately, you might be ready to go a little deeper. Get analytic. Are you favor-

ing one side over another? Do you have a stronger left bicep than right? Vice versa? Do you neglect your abdominal muscles? Your quad-riceps? Everybody could use a little realignment, and you’re no exception. Call on an expert if you can aff ord it. Observe on your own if you can’t.

vIRGo - Aug. 23-Sept. 22Restlessness plagues you this month. But treat it as an opportu-nity to get out of the

house and get work-ing out! But don’t rush

through your workout. Why not enjoy this time? You don’t need to do anything work-related. You don’t need to plan the menu for dinner. You don’t need to worry about the latest family mini drama that’s popped up and that you for some reason are sup-posed to resolve. So relax and work out.

LIBRA - Sept. 23-oct. 23It’s not selfi sh to insist on time to work out. Sure, you’ve got a lot of re-sponsibilities. And you’ll

attend to all of them. But you also need to take care of yourself: It’s just plain paramount. So be strong. If someone tries to guilt you out of your run, swim or trip to the gym, you need to put your foot down. Be there for yourself. Go. Work out. Be healthy. Feel good. Then you can attend to the rest of it.
