The hospiTaliTy managemenT program at Colorado

State University brought Pam and Jasen together. The two were

friends for awhile before they started dating. However, when

Pam graduated and moved to California to begin her career,

she hoped Jasen would follow. Jasen’s career path began on the

opposite coast. When he was offered a job in Florida, the couple

was forced to maintain a long-distance relationship for a year

until Pam landed a job in Florida, too.

Not long after the couple reunited in Florida, Jasen

proposed to Pam on a trip to Norway with her family. They

returned to Florida and began planning—and not just their

wedding. Despite the sun and sand, the Colorado couple longed

to return to their home state. Five months before the wedding,

they moved to Denver and finalized the plans for their

mountain wedding.

“I had always dreamed of having a Colorado wedding,”

Pam says. It was important to her to have amazing mountain

views in the background of the wedding photos. A Breckenridge

wedding was apropos for Jasen. Growing up there, he spent

countless winter days on the slopes at Beaver Run Resort.

Despite the Colorado connection, Pam and Jasen

wanted to reflect their time together in Florida in their

special day, too. “I loved the bright, sunny colors in Florida,”

Pam says. “That was the inspiration for the wedding colors.”

They wove personal touches through the wedding plans such

as a photo table with a collection of wedding photos from

Pam and Jasen’s parents’ and grandparents’ weddings and a

pair of skis for guests to sign, which hang today on Pam and

Jasen’s family room wall.

Of all the things invOlved in the

development of a relationship, the two that played a big

part for Nicci and BJ were family and food. The two have

strong family ties that played an important role in their

engagement and wedding. As a birthday present, BJ surprised

Nicci with a plane ticket from her home in Washington, D.C., to

Denver to visit her family. A few hours before her arrival, BJ—a

self-proclaimed old-fashioned guy—flew from his Houston

home to Denver to ask her parents for Nicci’s hand in marriage.

When Nicci arrived, he proposed. “I couldn’t have asked for

a better proposal,” Nicci says. “It was really important for my

parents to be there.”

Family played a huge role in the ceremony. The couple

invited BJ’s uncle, a pastor, to perform their wedding ceremony.

Nicci’s father had suffered a stroke a couple of years prior to

the wedding, and while she so badly wanted him to walk her

down the aisle, his condition was touch and go throughout the

planning process. In the end, he did walk her down the aisle,

and because he couldn’t speak as a result of the stroke, her four

uncles stood and said, “We give her away” when asked.

Food, something the couple constantly has to consider,

was a major factor in planning this momentous day. BJ is

diabetic and Nicci has celiac disease. It was important to the

couple to meet their own dietary restrictions, but also to

have food that their guests would love. The caterer worked

with them to create a delicious menu of entirely gluten-free

food. “They knocked it out of the park,” Nicci says. Everyone

loved the food and couldn’t believe it was gluten-free.

Another truly “Nicci and BJ” touch for the reception was a

popcorn bar. “We love popcorn,” Nicci says. The couple eats it

multiple times a week at home. “We were too busy talking and

visiting with friends and family that we didn’t get any

that night,” Nicci says. Certainly they have many years of

eating popcorn together to come.

Theresa and Paul meT on their first day of active

duty in the Air Force. About nine months later they found

themselves stationed together in North Dakota. And it wasn’t

long after that the pair started dating. “He really didn’t like me

at first,” Theresa says laughing. “But I grew on him.”

And grew on him she did; so much so that the couple

stayed together for five years in North Dakota, and when she

was transferred to the Denver area, Paul moved with her. She

knew at that time they were destined to marry. However, even

after choosing a ring together, she had no idea when he might

pop the question.

Paul wanted to propose to Theresa on a romantic

trip to the mountains. “I’m such a busy-body,” Theresa

says. “He couldn’t find the time to take me there.” So on an

unseasonably warm day, when they took the dogs for a walk

in City Park, Paul caught her off guard. “It was a really nice

surprise,” she says. “City Park has always been ‘our park’ to us,

but now even more so.”

When it came time to plan the wedding, Theresa

wasn’t able to commit to a color theme. “If you ask me my

favorite color, I can’t choose,” she says. She considered

rustic mountain colors like green, red and gold. Instead, she

chose all colors of the rainbow for their wedding, and once

she made the decision she was so happy she couldn’t sleep

all night!

When Theresa wanted to incorporate 1,000 paper

cranes into the wedding decorations, she had to sell Paul on

the idea. Once committed, he actually ended up folding most

of them himself. “That was one of the things that reassured

me I was marrying the right person,” Theresa says. “The way

he was really owning the project.”

While Paul folded paper, Theresa busied herself

learning a traditional hula dance to perform at the wedding

as a thank you to her father who is from Hawaii. It was her

way to let him know that even though he was giving her away,

she would always be his daughter. It was especially emotional

because he had been diagnosed with cancer and Theresa

wasn’t sure he would even make it to the wedding. He made it

and gave her away in style. Maybe it had something to do with

the 1,000 lucky cranes.

Although lAuren And riAn hAil from the East

Coast, they are a Colorado couple through and through. The

two shared a fleeting three-month romance in high school

before heading off to different colleges. When they reunited

after college and began their life together, they chose to do it in

the Mile High City.

The majority of their adult relationship was built in

Colorado enjoying the mountain lifestyle, so it was fitting that

Rian proposed while the couple was hiking the Loch Vale trail

in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Despite some contention over not getting married back

east, Lauren and Rian felt it was important to marry in the state

they love so much. “This is who we are as a couple,” Lauren

says. “It was important to us that our family come here. We

made it like a big vacation for them.”

After first planning a wedding in Telluride, the couple

decided that the Denver-themed week was a better option.

It was important to marry outside and feel close to the

mountains, and they wanted a barbeque dinner. With that in

mind, an obvious choice for the ceremony and reception site

was the Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield.

The wedding week began when early-arriving guests

were treated to dinner at Taqueria Patzcuaro, where Lauren

and Rian had their first dinner out when they moved to

Denver. Other wedding week activities included the rehearsal

at Centennial Park along the river, dinner at Highland Tap and

Burger and a post-wedding day spent at the ballpark watching

a Rockies game. “We wanted to share with our family all of the

things we love about living in Denver,” Lauren says. “The whole

week was a true reflection of our lifestyle.”

Looking back, the couple can’t decide on one part of the

week that was the best. “As a whole, it was great fun,” Lauren

says. “We were able to really connect with everyone there, and it

felt like they were all a part of the wedding—and a part of us.”
