THE CITY #THECITY#

Florentia – florid city – was the name givenby the Romans to this settlement foundedin the I century AD along the Arno river atthe foot of Fiesole, an Etruscan city whoseruins are visible on the hill whichdominates the city. The flowering ofFlorence in art, culture and internationaltrade began in the 13th century andreached its peak in the 15th century underthe reign of the Medici family, who ruledover the city until the end of the 18thcentury.

Everywhere you turn in Florence, you findextraordinary works of art andarchitecture, which attract some 8 milliontourists a year – from the Palazzo Vecchioto the world-famous Uffizi gallery and theCathedral with its magnificent dome andthe tower designed by Giotto.
