CARNIVAL SUCCESS. T h i s y e a r ' s G u i l d s 1 C a r n i v a l " f i e s t a " was

much l e s s l i k e Bok-Bok, o r a n E t o n i v a l l - g a m e , t h a n p r e v i o u s a f f a i r s . The d e c o r a t i o n scheme was a m b i t i o u s , and m i g h t i l y s u c c e s s f u l i n t h e Gym, where t h e e s s e n t i a l p u r p o s e o f m a k i n g f a m i l i a r p l a c e s l o o k f r e s h l y d i f f e r e n t was a c h i e v e d b e s t . A f t e r t h e l e s s o n o f h i r e d c a b a r e t s o f t h e p a s t two y e a r s , G u i l d s p r o d u c e d a b e t t e r a m a t e u r show, l a r g e l y t h e i r own, t h a t was r e c e i v e d w i t h a t t e n t i o n and a p p l a u s e . I f t h e i r s u b j e c t s , o f s t u d e n t c o n t r i b u t i o n , were e x c u r s i o n s n e a r t h e o l d and h o a r y , a t l e a s t t h e y were done w i t h w i t and p r e s e n t e d w i t h a l i g h t a i r . The S p a n i s h d a n c e r s who t o p p e d t h e b i l l h a d a l r e a d y l i m b e r e d up e a r l y • i n t h e e v e n i n g , b u t were s t i l l much t h e A n g l o -S axons - t h a t m o s t o f them were - u n t i l t h e y g o t warmed up a g a i n . A l t h o u g h P r e s i d e n t o f t h e H.C.3. ; nd S e c r e t a r y l a s t y e a r , J o h n H a r d i n g i s a l s o w e l l -known as a l e a d i n g member o f t h e D r a m a t i c S o c i e t y amongst whom he i s more r e a d i l y known as " W i l l y " a f t e r h i s c e l e b r a t e d p e r f o r m a n c e . B u t t h e S o c i e t y ' s r e c e n t c h o i c e o f p l a y , "The J e a l o u s W i f e " , was h a r d l y t h e o p p o r t u n i t y f o r i t s c a s t t o e n j o y t h e f u n and games e x p e c t e d i n an e i g h t e e n t h C e n t u r y Comedy, and J o h n , as t h e d i s s o l u t e and l e i s u r e d f o p L o r d T r i n k e t , was n o t g i v e n f u l l employment i n h i s p a r t i n g a p p e a r a n c e f o r the S o c i e t y .

W i l l y i s a d i f f i c u l t p e r s o n t o a n a l y s e beyond t h e f i r s t o b s e r v a t i o n t h a t an a r t i s t i c b e n t ( i n a . c r e a t i v e n o t p r e c i o u s s e n s e ) i s a g r e a t e r e l e m e n t i n h i s c h a r a c t e r t h a n i s p l a i n f o r c e . On o c c a s i o n s t h e s e two i n t e r e s t s s u i t e a c h o t h e r ' s demands w e l l , b u t on o t h e r s we f i n d t h a t h i s s p e e c h e s a t r e c e p t i o n s a r e more s e r i o u s t h a n s u i t t h e i r f u n c t i o n . These p e r h a p s l a c k r e h e a r s a l , t h o u g h r e h e a r s a l a l o n e d i d n o t p r o d u c e t h e a c t i n g o f W i l l y i n "Off t h e R e c o r d " . He has t r u l y p r o d u c e d such e f f e c t i v e l y t i m e d and c o m p l e t e c h a r a c t e r s on o u r s t a g e t h a t we have o v e r l o o k e d t h e c o n c e n t r a t i o n and w o r k i n v o l v e d , and we have begun t o assume that he s h o u l d mould h i m s e l f t o a f o r e i g n n e r v e l e s s c h a r a c t e r a t a l l t i m e s .

K r e s h e r s w i l l h a v e met him at r e c e p t i o n s , and some Chemists w i l l have known h i m as t h e d e m o n s t r a t o r who p u t o u t t h e i r e a r l i e r e x p e r i ­m e n t a l f i r e s ; b u t e v e n these, t o g e t h e r w i t h h i s a p p e a r a n c e at U n i o n meetings, and t h e f a c t s of h i s l i f e do n o t add up t o t h e w h o l e H a r d i n g . Commonsense he may have g a i n e d f r o m b e i n g tossed a r o u n d i n w a r - t i m e e v a c u a t i o n , and f r o m t a k i n g M a t r i c a t a Co-Ed. s c h o o l . S u c c e s s i n obtaining a R o y a l S c h o l a r s h i p came a f t e r two y e a r s i n a s c h o o l o f b o y s o n l y , and he came t o the R.C.S. C h e m i s t r y D e p a r t m e n t i n 1948 at the age of s e v e n t e e n , a y e a r e a r l i e r t h a n he expected. He t h u s m i s s e d h i s t u r n a s Head Boy a t Schools here i s t h e l i n k t h a t has l e a d t o h i s b e i n g Head Boy o f t h e R.C.S., and a l s o to h i s p r o f e s s i o n of i n t e r e s t i n i n d u s t r i a l a d m i n i s t r a t i o n now t h a t the s p e l l o f r e s e a r c h i s coming t o a n end.

P O L I T I C A L S O C I E T Y R E P O R T .

Reviewing the a c t i v i t i e s during the past term of the P o l i t i c a l Society and i t s constituent groups one r e a l i z e s •that students do not give t h i s important society s u f f i c i e n t support. The r e a l aim of the P o l . S o c , of which a l l students are members, i s to i n t e r e s t and inform students i n the vi«ws of the p o l i t i c a l p a r t i e s .

The society s t a r t e d the term w i t h high hopes and a f u l l program le, but lack of support caused a number of discussions t o be cancelled. The f i r s t item on the P o l . S o c , programs was the annual Freshers t e a held i n conjunction with the l i t . and Deb. Soc.

The f o l l o w i n g day the Conservative Group held t h e i r A.G.M. where they elected o f f i c e r s f o r t h i s session, drafted a c o n s t i t u t i o n , and arranged t o hold a se r i e s of discussions. Due t o lack of support only one was held. This was on "The future of the Labour Party'.' The number present was le s s tnan h a l f a dozen even though open t o a l l who wished t o attend.

The S o c i a l i s t group fared s l i g h t l y b e t t e r , holding three meetings. The f i r s t of them, was addressed by Gordon Schaffer on "German Rearmament'.' As he had v i s i t e d Germany severa l times i n the past few years he could t a l k from p r a c t i c a l knowledge. On November 7th the "Problem of Kenya" was discusseds t h i s was l e d by a Kenya student so that f i r s t hand knowledge was again a v a i l a b l e .

The L i b e r a l liroup, the smallest., d i d not hold any meetings during the term. A j o i n t meeting at I.C. with the U.L. L i b e r a l Federation at which Mr. Ronald Walker, the President of the L i b e r a l P a r t y , was to speak unfortunatly had t o be cancelled.

The p o l i t i c a l a c t i v i t i e s of the term ended w i t h a v i s i t

by 5 members of the P o l . S o c , to the House of Commons.

In order to encourage research workers both in academic life and industry to appreciate the industrial significance of new discoveries and to exercise their ability in expressing their ideas at a policy-forming level, the publishers of Research have enabled the Scientific Advisory Board to offer prizes for papers discussing the possible industrial applications of some recent scientific investigation, whatever its origin. Papers, which should be about 3000 words in length, should be written in a manner which will enable an intelligent reader with a general scientific interest to appreciate the argument.

Entries, which will be judged by a committee to be appointed by the Scientific Advisory Board, should reach the offices of Research, 4, 5, 6 Bell Yard, London, W.C.2, on or before 30 April 1953. Entries will be accepted only from persons actively engaged on research work in industry, Government or university laboratories.

Prizes of £100 and £50 are offered for those entries which are adjudged to be best and second best, respectively. The Advisory Board has discretion to award an additional prize or prizes according to the quality of the contributions submitted. The judges' opinion must be regarded as final. The prize winning entries will be published in the Journal. Research also reserves the right to publish any other papers submitted, for which payment will be made at the appropriate rate.
