Martin awarded Fulbright; Named emmanuel’s Next Wyant ProfessorEmmanuel Professor of Political Science Dr. Lenore Martin will travel to Turkey during the spring 2010 semester as a Senior Research Fulbright Scholar. She will leave in February to conduct ongoing research for a book on Turkey and the Middle East. Upon her return, she will continue her recent appointment as the new Louise Doherty Wyant Professor at Emmanuel College. Dr. Martin will be at Middle East Technical University (METU) located in the capital city, Ankara. She previ-ously conducted research at METU in 2006 as part of a Senior Fulbright

Specialist grant, helping to develop a Middle East program at the university. The current award marks her third Fulbright grant and her longest-sched-uled visit since she began traveling to the country in 1994. “I’m very excited about the coming semester,” said Dr. Martin. “I’ve done some writing and a lot of thinking on this subject. To go to Turkey and concentrate on my research and writ-ing is a privilege. I am very thankful, not only to the Fulbright Commission, but to Emmanuel College for encour-aging me to take full advantage of this opportunity.”

Dr. Martin is one of approximately 1,250 U.S. college and university faculty and professionals to receive a Fulbright grant to teach and/or conduct research abroad this year. A preeminent scholar in Middle East-ern studies, she has been a member of Emmanuel’s faculty since 1973. In addition, Dr. Martin is a Research Associate of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and an Associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs both at Harvard University, where she co-chairs the Middle East Seminar and the Seminar on Turkey in the Modern World. Emmanuel’s Founders’ Week celebra-tion, sponsored by the Center for Mission and Spirituality, kicks off on January 31st. The theme is “90 Years of Mission,” which includes prayer services, speakers and films highlight-ing the College’s anniversary year.

The weeklong event will open with a showing of the award-winning documentary, “They Killed Sister Dorothy,” about the life and murder of Sister Dorothy Stang, SND and her work on behalf of the indigenous people of Brazil and the Amazon rain-forest, at 6:00 p.m. in the Janet M. Daley Library Lecture Hall on January 31st.

Sister Peggy Cummins, SND, the vol-unteer coordinator of the Notre Dame Education Center in South Boston, MA, will discuss “The End of Human Trafficking, the Modern-Day Slave Trade: A Chapter Call of the Sisters of Notre Dame” at 12:15 p.m. on February 2nd in the Daley Library Lecture Hall. A dinner with Kristen Impastato ’08, the Boston-area site director for Notre Dame Mission Volunteers-AmeriCorps will follow in the Jean Yawkey Center for Community Leadership at 5:00 p.m.

The featured speaker is Emmanuel’s Director of Academic Advising Sister Susan Thornell, SND, who will speak on February 4th at 12:15 p.m. in the Daley Library Lecture Hall.

During the fall semester, Emmanuel’s “Principles in Marketing” class part-nered with the Google Grants Program and the Google Adwords in the Cur-riculum Team as a means of learn-ing more about marketing strategies through the use of Google Adwords. The program allowed students to gain hands-on experience with building Adword campaigns for local nonprofit Google Grant recipients. In creating these campaigns, the students produced advertisements and chose keywords, which are words or

phrases related to the business. Using these selected keywords, Google’s contextual targeting technology automatically matches the ads to web pages in its network that are most relevant to the nonprofit, allowing the company to advertise to an audience that is already interested in its products or services. As part of the program, students had access to Google Adwords placement performance reports, giving them visibility into where all of their ads appeared. The students were able to

review their performance on a site-by-site basis to see impression, click, cost, and conversion data, and use this data to identify well-performing sites to target more aggressively and low-value placements that require content optimization or exclusion.

The group project was designed by Associate Professor of Management Mirtha Crisostomo after Google sent her an invitation to participate in the Google Adwords in the Curriculum program. In order to participate,

Inaugural Mission Grammar boys basketball Team Calls emmanuel HomeThe Our Lady of Perpetual Help Mission Grammar boys basketball team competed in its first-ever home game in Emmanuel College’s Jean Yawkey Center on December 8th.

The Yawkey Center for Community Leadership is providing the gym space for practice and home games during the Mission Grammar Saints’ inau-gural season. The Emmanuel and Yawkey spirit was alive and well at this special inaugural event. The team played a competitive game cheered on by a number of members of the Emmanuel student body and Mission Grammar family and friends. Campus Activities and Student Events (CASE) made a banner and members of the Black Student Union (BSU) made individual signs with each player’s name and number. Halo, the Emmanuel College Saints’ mascot, made an appearance as well.

Albert Hayle ’05, an eighth-grade teacher at Mission Grammar, serves as the team’s head coach. He says the student-athletes are excited to call

Emmanuel College’s gym their home court and are grateful for the partner-ship between the two schools. The chance to practice and play in a college

environment has enlightened the minds of the student-athletes, showing them that college is an experience worth looking forward to. “This partnership with Emmanuel means the world to us. It’s a tremen-dous opportunity that we value every second we spend in the gym practicing or playing games,” he said. “It’s an eye-opening experience for the students, the opportunity to embrace the college environment and learn from our big sister school about commitment and giving back to the community. My players and their families are so excited every day that they get the opportunity to visit and tour Emmanuel’s beautiful campus and athletic facilities.”

With New Wave of H1N1 expected, a reminder to remain Cautious

Although H1N1 influenza activity has decreased since early December, experts are predicting a resurgence of the virus during the winter months. In anticipation for another wave, we once again remind all members of the Emmanuel community to remain vigilant and to take the necessary precautions against the illness.

Currently, Health Services has doses of the H1N1 vaccine available to those interested in immunization. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend all college-age young adults receive the H1N1 vaccine, which should be used alongside the seasonal flu vaccination.

Students are asked to contact Health Services for information about the

H1N1 vaccine. We encourage parents to visit our Parents and Families web page and provide contact information, particularly e-mail addresses. E-mail is the fastest way for members of our administration and staff to contact you with news and updates. The form takes only a few minutes of your time. To update your information, visit www.emmanuel.edu and click on “Parents & Families.”

The H1N1 virus can be spread from person to person. According to the CDC, the best measures to prevent the spread of H1N1 are: Avoiding contact with ill persons; frequent hand washing with either soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer; and covering your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough.

During the spring semester, the College will present the final two installments of the yearlong, four-part lecture series entitled, “Making Meaningful Connections: Interdisciplinary Discussions by Emmanuel Faculty.”

The series theme was inspired by this year’s Academic Convocation speaker Jonah Lehrer’s discussion of interdisci-plinary learning. Each lecture features two faculty members, paired across arts and sciences backgrounds, who are challenged to consider how their

specific research and scholarly interests have been or could be influenced by the contrasting discipline.

The next installment of the “Making Meaningful Connections” lecture series will feature Associate Professor of Biology Josef Kurtz and Professor of Philosophy Raymond Deveterre discussing “Bone Marrow to Brain Cells and Ethical Journey” on February 10th. The lecture will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Janet M. Daley Lecture Hall.

First “emmanuel Couple” Welcome Firstborn Son, Future Legacy?Emmanuel alumni Jariel Vergne ’03 and Melissa DaCruz Vergne ’03 did not realize that they were making Emmanuel history when they married on July 22nd, 2006 in the Emmanuel College Chapel, but it was on that day that they claimed the title of the very first “Emmanuel couple.” Recently, the couple gave birth to their first son.

“We’re happy to be the parents of a beautiful baby boy, Ivan Manuel. Little does he know he too has made history,” said Jariel. “We look forward to sharing our story with him. Who knows, maybe he’ll keep the cycle going.”

Since enrolling, several family members have followed in the couple’s footsteps by attending Emmanuel; Natalie Baptista ’04, Julio Vergne ’03, Henry Baptista ’08, and Mark Da Cruz ’08.

The couple has returned to campus to support their family in special events, attend alumni events and to take in a few soccer and basketball games. Also, after Jariel graduated from Emmanuel, he helped the men’s basketball team as a volunteer coach.

Last year, Jariel was the keynote speaker at the graduation dinner for

the students of the multicultural clubs of Emmanuel.

The couple met during their college years while Melissa was attending Emmanuel, then an all-women’s college, and Jariel was attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Jariel visited Melissa at Emmanuel often and decided to transfer not only to be closer to Melissa, but to also be a part of the Emmanuel community of which he had grown so fond.

“Visiting Melissa, I fell in love with Boston and began to feel that I needed a college that could offer me the personal college experience that I was

looking for,” said Jariel. “I was also interested in playing college basketball and was able to be part of the first men’s basketball team, which was truly a memorable experience. Also I knew that by being closer to Melissa, I would become more focused and academically motivated.”

When the couple planned to marry, it was no question as to where the ceremony would take place. After sharing many memorable moments on Emmanuel’s campus as students, Jariel and Melissa celebrated their marriage with family and friends in the College Chapel and were married by Emmanuel’s Director of Campus

Ministry and College Chaplain Father Stephen Boyle.

“We knew right away that Emmanuel’s Chapel is where we wanted to say our ‘I Do’s.’ We shared so many special moments on campus and went to Fr. Steve’s Masses many times. It just made sense for the wedding to be held there,” said Melissa. “The steps of the Administra-tion Building also had significance to us. It’s where many of Emmanuel’s formal pictures are taken; Junior Ring ceremony, Commencement, etc. Our wedding photographer took a picture of us on the steps on our wedding day and the picture hangs in our living room as a constant reminder of where our ‘love story’ began.”

Jariel and Melissa feel honored to be considered the “first Emmanuel couple” and truly enjoy revisiting the campus and remembering where their story began; a story that they plan on telling for years to come.

“I think it’s a great story to share with our children some day and their children,” said Melissa. “Who would’ve thought that we would be part of history? I think it’s definitely special and was meant to be.”

Melissa, Ivan Manuel and Jariel Vergne.

While in Turkey, Dr. Martin will have a number of speaking engagements, having already been contacted by Turkish universities, the U.S. Embassy, and the Fulbright Commission. She hopes to also travel to Syria and Israel as part of her research. In addition to aiding her scholarly work, her research in Turkey represents one of her first activities as the new Wyant Professor. The first endowed professorship in the College’s history, the Louise Doherty Wyant Professorship at Emmanuel College was established by the late Louise Doherty Wyant ’63 and her husband, Dr. James Wyant, to be held in the humanities, history and the arts, and in honor of Sister Anne Cyril Delaney, SND. Sister Anne Cyril was a professor of English at Emmanuel for 26 years. Dr. Martin will serve a three-year term through the summer of 2012. “This appointment recognizes Dr. Martin’s notable contributions to the College, to scholarship, and to the academic community,” said Emmanuel College President Sister Janet Eisner, SND. “Dr. Martin is known by her students and colleagues for the high quality of her teaching, her leadership and service on Emmanuel committees, her engagement in developing a num-

ber of college-wide academic initiatives, and for promoting the future success and career aspirations of students. It is most fitting that she now serves as our Wyant Professor.” Dr. Martin’s initial thoughts for the professorship include building the 2010-2011 Wyant Lecture Series around the theme of “peace,” which she hopes will allow for contributions from many disciplines. She will teach one course per semester during her appointment, “The Contemporary Middle East: Challenges and Promise” in the fall 2010 and “Strategies of War and Peace” for spring 2011 – courses she says pair beautifully with her current research. “The timing of the appointment is perfect. I will be returning from Turkey after immersion in a totally different culture. I should have a great deal to share with my colleagues and students,” she said of her recent appointment as Wyant Professor. “It is a true honor to follow in the footsteps of such a strong academic as Professor Emeritus Patricia Herlihy. I have big shoes to fill, but I am looking forward to the opportunity.”

The spring 2010 Wyant Lecture will feature Sr. Helen Prejean, CSJ, bestsell-ing author of Dead Man Walking on March 30th. Visit www.emmanuel.edu for more details.

Crisostomo was required to pass a Google certification exam. The project took place during the second half of the fall semester and each group within the class was assigned one local nonprofit company that had been awarded a Google Grant. The groups included CDRC Boston, Break Through Cambridge, Cambridge Cares about AIDS, Boston Urban Music Project, Boston Senior Home Care, and Boston Life, Inc.

Once paired with an organization, the teams strategized to find a target market for each company, met with a representative from the nonprofit,

and set up an Adword account. After tracking the account and making the necessary adjustments, the student groups then handed the account over to the agency. Each team had to find keywords that may lead Internet searchers towards the services of their nonprofit agency and to their company’s web site.

The Adwords in the Curriculum program helped to teach the students about successful marketing strategies and allowed them hands-on experience in a professional environment. Students were even offered internships at the sites in which they were assigned due to the success of their campaigns.
