Es war der Austragungsort der Olympischen Spiele der Antike.Bereits im Mittelhelladikum befand sich im Bereich der späteren Altis von Olympia eine Siedlung. Aus mykenischer Zeit stammen hingegen nur einzelne Funde, während auf einer Anhöhe westlich über Olympia in mykenischer Zeit eine bedeutende Siedlung existierte. Die Kultstätte entstand etwa im 10./9. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Ihre monumentalen Bauten erhielten ihre endgültige Form im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Im Jahre 426 n. Chr. ließ der oströmische Kaiser Theodosius II. die dort stattfindenden Spiele und Weihehandlungen verbieten, um das Heidentum zu bekämpfen.
