Hymn: TiS 111
1. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
the King of creation;
O my soul, praise him, for he is your
health and salvation.
Come all who hear,
brothers and sisters draw near,
praise him in glad adoration.
2. Praise to the Lord who in all things
is wondrously reigning
and, as on wings of an eagle,
uplifting, sustaining:
have you not seen
all that is needed has been
sent by his gracious ordaining?
3. Praise to the Lord, who will
prosper our work and defend us;
surely his goodness and mercy shall
daily attend us:
ponder anew
what the Almighty can do
as with his love he befriends us.
4. Praise to the Lord, who when
darkness of sin is abounding,
who, when the godless do triumph,
our best hopes confounding,
sheds forth his light,
scatters the horrors of night,
saints with his mercy surrounding.
5. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is
in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come
now with praises before him.
Let the Amen
sound from his people again:
gladly for ever adore him.
Joachim Neander 1650–80
tr. Catherine Winkworth 1827–78 and others
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
3
Sentence: Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed
down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the
measure you give will be the measure you get back. Luke 6.38
Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your
God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and
with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment.
And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’
4
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution (Celebrant)
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to
him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,
strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria – Ushaw Setting (Alan Rees)
CHOIR: Glory, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest,
ALL:
and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
6
Prayer of the Day
O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the
works of evil and make us your children and heirs of eternal life: grant
that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when
he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in
his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: RUTH 4.9-17 9Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, ‘Today you are witnesses
that I have acquired from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech
and all that belonged to Chilion and Mahlon. 10
I have also acquired Ruth the
Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, to be my wife, to maintain the dead man’s
name on his inheritance, in order that the name of the dead may not be cut
off from his kindred and from the gate of his native place; today you are
witnesses.’ 11
Then all the people who were at the gate, along with the
elders, said, ‘We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is
coming into your house like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the
house of Israel. May you produce children in Ephrathah and bestow a name
in Bethlehem; 12
and, through the children that the Lord will give you by this
young woman, may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar
bore to Judah.’ 13
So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When they
came together, the Lord made her conceive, and she bore a son. 14
Then the
women said to Naomi, ‘Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day
without next-of-kin; and may his name be renowned in Israel! 15
He shall be
to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-
in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has borne
him.’ 16
Then Naomi took the child and laid him in her bosom, and became
his nurse. 17
The women of the neighbourhood gave him a name, saying, ‘A
son has been born to Naomi.’ They named him Obed; he became the father
of Jesse, the father of David.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm 127 1 Unless the Lord builds the house:
their labour is but lost that build it. 2 Unless the Lord keeps the city:
the watchmen watch in vain. 3 It is in vain that you rise up early and go so late to rest, eating the bread of
toil:
for the Lord bestows honour—and on those whom he loves. 4 Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord:
and the fruit of the womb is his gift. 5 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior:
are the children of one's youth. 6 Happy the man who has his quiver full of them:
he will not be put to shame when he confronts his enemies at the gate.
Second Reading: HEBREWS 9.23-28
23
Thus it was necessary for the sketches of the heavenly things to be purified
with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves need better sacrifices
than these. 24
For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a
mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear
in the presence of God on our behalf. 25
Nor was it to offer himself again and
again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that
is not his own; 26
for then he would have had to suffer again and again since
the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the
end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27
And just as it is
appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgement, 28
so Christ,
having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second
time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 618
1. What does the Lord require
for praise and offering?
What sacrifice desire
or tribute bid you bring?
Do justly;
love mercy;
walk humbly with
your God.
2. Rulers of earth, give ear!
should you not justice show?
Will God your pleading hear,
while crime and cruelty grow?
Do justly;
love mercy;
walk humbly with
your God.
3. Leaders in wealth and trade,
for whom the worker toils,
think not to win God’s aid
if greed your commerce soils.
Do justly;
love mercy;
walk humbly with
your God.
4. Still down the ages ring
the prophet’s stern commands:
to merchant, worker, king,
he brings God’s high demands.
Do justly;
love mercy;
walk humbly with
your God.
5. How shall our life fulfil
God’s law so hard and high?
Let Christ endue our will
with grace to fortify.
Then justly,
in mercy,
we’ll humbly walk
with God.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet
our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 12
beginning at the 38th
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
38
As he taught, he said, ‘Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in
long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the market-places, 39
and to
have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honour at
banquets! 40
They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say
long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.’ 41
He sat down
opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the
treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42
A poor widow came and put
in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43
Then he called his
disciples and said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more
than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44
For all of them have
contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in
everything she had, all she had to live on.’
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

SERMON - (copy of sermon available at back of church)
The Nicene Creed
Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.
We believe in one God,
the Father, the almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge
the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
