Congratulations to Year 7 students who have achieved their Bronze award The HT Award recognises students who continue to make positive contributions to our school community. The Award is based on their total achievement points awarded by staff at Haileybury Turnford. There are 5 levels of award that students work towards across Year 7 and 8. It is important to note that negative conduct points do not take away from their achievements and are not taken into consideration when awarding their badges.

Year 7 students have been working extremely hard and every student has been striving for points both inside and outside of their lessons. Parents are able to see their child’s achievement points total on the “Class Charts” app and are notified via this system by email when a student has achieved an award. Please make sure you have downloaded the app and logged in to follow the progress of your child.

Curriculum Round-up

Belsen 75 Project By Tia Matthews and Abbie Wagstaff

On 2nd February we began a four-part project on the importance on Bergen-Belsen concentration camp which the British forces liberated on the 15th April 1945. Part one of our project was a pre-visit seminar which included an introduction to the history of Bergen-Belsen 1937-1950; here was where we learnt that Bergen-Belsen was originally a military base and was then adapted to become prisoner of war/concentration camp during the war. Most importantly after liberation it was a displaced persons’ camp of which most people aren’t aware. Also, during the seminar, we were lucky to be able to witness Renée Salt a Jewish survivor recall her experience prior to the war and life within Bergen-Belsen which gave us an insight into how traumatic and horrifying life at the concentration camp could be. Out of fifteen aunts and uncles, her parents and sister, the only survivor was one aunt.

The second part of our project was a 3:30am start on 5th February for our day-trip to Germany where we flew from Stansted to Hanover Airport with the purpose to see and educate ourselves about Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. This included an exhibition which showed us recordings of witness testimonies and information regarding

the prisoners of war camp and the variety of nationalities trapped within the grounds and a visit to what remains of the concentration camp (due to it being burnt down to prevent the spread of the disease, typhus), where tens of thousands of people were forced into hard labour, lived in unsanitary conditions, starved and tortured. A short coach ride away from the main camp itself stood the displaced persons camp that housed thousands of people after liberation as their homes were no longer safe and their families were dead.

Entering the climax of our trip was the memorial ground which consisted of many mass graves and individual headstones such as Margot and Anne Frank. Standing near these mass graves was a surreal experience and helped us realise the extent of which Bergen-Belsen damaged our society and history. We commemorated the thousands of lives lost and took this time to think about how valuable it is to remember those who lived and died in such awful conditions, and to make sure that history isn’t repeated. During this ceremony we heard a reading of how the people endured life at Bergen-Belsen and held a one minute silence to pay our respects to the victims of the genocide.

The following Sunday we attended a reflections seminar where we were prompted to express how we felt whilst at the concentration camp and what the purpose of the Belsen 75 project is. We also discussed how anti-Semitism is still a continuous problem in our society today with the most cases being on social media and what we can do as a society to prevent this behaviour spreading further. For example, educating people to be more considerate of other cultures and lifestyles and to be able to recognise and report instances of prejudice.

Our final task of the Belsen 75 legacy project is to make young people more aware of the horrors of the Holocaust and how the suffering didn’t end after liberation in 1945.

Stand Together – Holocaust Memorial Day 2020

We were privileged to be able to welcome to our school, a Holocaust Survivor, Dr Agnes Kaposi. She was born in Hungary and started school at the outbreak of World War II. Dr Kaposi explained about how this day is an occasion to remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution and in the genocides which followed.

Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday 27th January is an international day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfu.

27th January also marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

Music trip to The Royal Festival Hall

On 11th February Mrs Nicholson and Mrs Goodes took 18 students from Year 8, 9, 10 & 11 to the Royal Festival Hall in London to see the London Philharmonic Orchestra perform live in a concert. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience world class musicians performing music from a wide range of styles. The highlight of the concert was seeing the orchestra perform the original Star Wars Theme.

Year 10 & 11 were able to experience music which they had studied about in class. Year 8 & 9 students learnt about lots of styles of music and Year 9 students will complete some

composing work based on what they learnt on the day. Our students were fantastic ambassadors for our school.

Haileybury ISSP Masterclass – The Greatest Event in history

Following the success of the inaugural Haileybury ISSP (Independent State School Partnership) Masterclass before Christmas, a second masterclass for Year 7 students from Haileybury Turnford and Haileybury took part with a focus on the big question, “What is the Most Important Event in History?”. This question both fascinated the students and allowed for high level intellectual discussion from a wide variety of perspectives. The Year 7 students showed great reasoning and deduction skills in creating criteria for what constitutes greatness and then used these criteria to debate which event from history was “greatest”. In another session, the students used these skills to assign blame to different groups of people involved in the Holocaust and to finally decide who must ultimately be held accountable for the atrocity.

Additionally, students were fortunate to benefit from the fact that sixth formers from both schools have been involved in recent projects to mark the 75th anniversary of concentration camp liberation. As a result, these students relayed their first-hand experiences and reflections of speaking to a Holocaust survivor and visiting Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany. Both pairs of sixth formers spoke passionately and eloquently with both concluding that we must learn from our mistakes in the past in order to not be destined to repeat them in future.

Brilliant Club Graduation Trip

We celebrated twelve Year 9 students’ achievements and reflected on their options for university as they graduated from The Scholars Programme at Goldsmiths, University of London. The programme begins and ends with a visit to a highly-selective university so students can experience the intellectual and physical environment of university in order to develop the knowledge, skills and ambition needed to be successful. One student commented, “It was very fun and informative. A huge challenge but enjoyable!”

The programme has involved them working closely with a PhD tutor, who is either studying to gain a PhD or already has one, in a series of small group university-style tutorials over several months. Haileybury Turnford students challenging super-curricular course was entitled ‘Cracking The Genetic Code: Understanding

Bioinformatics’. As the tutor also acts as lecturer to students at university level, it has been a unique opportunity for the students to experience university-style teaching.

The students worked extremely hard and they all completed an extended final assignment that has pushed them to produce A Level standard essays and they received some fantastic results; all students taking part passed the programme with flying colours and four of the students - Daisy Howard, Dylan Aziz, Kailey Hampton and Grace Heywood achieved first-class honours!

Safer Internet Day – Together for a better Internet

On Tuesday 11th February led by the Haileybury Turnford Diversity Leadership Team, we celebrated Safer Internet Day. Safer Internet Day was created to encourage students to explore how they manage their online identity, and how the Internet shapes how they think of themselves and others. At Haileybury Turnford we celebrated this through assemblies and form time activities where students discussed whether the Internet allows the students to express themselves or if they feel limited in who they can be online. During break and lunchtime the students were able to express how they felt about the Internet by completing one of two sentence starters:

‘The online world is diverse and equal because …’ ‘The online world is not diverse and equal because ….’

By opening up these conversations around online identity we will be able to have a better understanding of how the students are accessing the Internet and supported by the Haileybury Turnford Diversity Leadership Team, we will be able to collate the answers and put some support in place around different aspects of being safe online.

Teen Brain Parent Forum Workshop

On Monday 10th February we held a Teen Brain Parent/Carer Forum for parents of children at HT and also parents and carers from Brookland Junior School. This workshop aimed to introduce parents and carers to the basics of teenage brain development and how these developments impact sleep patterns, risk taking and peer group relationships. The aim of the session was to support parents’ understanding of adolescent behaviour and enable parents to support their child through this transitionary time. The workshop included practical ways and suggestions on how parents and carers can best support their child through helping to establish routines and managing stress.

The Teen Brain: 6 Things to Know:

Your brain does not keep getting bigger as you get older For girls, the brain reaches its largest physical size around 11 years old and for boys, the brain reaches its largest physical size around age 14. Of course, this difference in age does not mean either boys or girls are smarter than one another!

But that doesn’t mean your brain is done maturing For both boys and girls, although your brain may be as large as it will ever be, your brain doesn't finish developing and maturing until your mid- to late-20s. The front part of the brain, called the prefrontal cortex, is one of the last brain regions to mature. It is the area responsible for planning, prioritizing and controlling impulses.

The teen brain is ready to learn and adapt In a digital world that is constantly changing, the adolescent brain is well prepared to adapt to new technology, and is shaped in return by experience.

Many mental disorders appear during adolescence All the big changes the brain is experiencing may explain why adolescence is the time when many mental disorders such as schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and eating disorders emerge.

The teen brain is resilient Although adolescence is a vulnerable time for the brain and for teenagers in general, most teens go on to become healthy adults. Some changes in the brain during this important phase of development actually may help protect against long-term mental disorders.

Teens need more sleep than children and adults Although it may seem like teens are lazy, science shows that melatonin levels (or the "sleep hormone" levels) in the blood naturally rise later at night and fall later in the morning than in most children and adults. This may explain why many teens stay up late and struggle with getting up in the morning. Teens should get about 9-10 hours of sleep a night, but most teens don’t get enough sleep. A lack of sleep makes paying attention hard, increases impulsivity and may also increase irritability and depression.
