Sometimes, I come across people who appear to be involved in a long line of mishaps and critical illnesses. It is a clear sign of a huge karmic debt burying them down. Some politicians and businessmen understand this, thanks to their family pundits who tell them to offload some of their wealth on temples and charities. Which is why, you will see sack-fulls of cash being deposited at places of worship every year. The strategy works and the wealthy person’s life is back to normal.
However, do you have to wait until things deteriorate? Here is where some Islamic tenets come in handy. And this is most active during Ramzan. Every year, Muslims are to donate a minimum of 2.5% of their wealth as Zakat (wealth purification). There is no maximum limit to it. Says the Holy Quran: “Those who spend in charity, whether in prosperity or adversity, who restrain anger and pardon people; for God loves those who do good to others.” In addition, there is Sadaqah (charity), which refers to any act of kindness for the underprivileged without letting the world know about it.
In Islam, if prayers (salat) are made obligatory to purify our hearts from every kind of pride, fasting (seeyam) controls our appetite and zakat helps us overcome greed. The spirit behind all these acts of worship is submission to god, gratitude for all his bounties and hope for his forgiveness and mercy.
The upshot of this editorial? It pays to help others in need. It could be your neighbour, your maid, your local charity or your poor relatives.
Be a proud citizen. Be a humane being! Purify your wealth.

HSR IN THE NEWSOVER 27,000 RESIDENTS OPPOSE AGARA SEZ PROJECTCitizens of Koramangala, HSR Layout and Bellandur areas have written to all industry bodies and government departments concerned, highlighting the violations in upcoming SEZ near Agara in Bangalore, developed by Mantri Developers. As part of South-East Bangalore Forum for Sustainable Development, they are opposing the massive 72-acre IT SEZ project by Manipal ETA Infotech, near Agara Lake. A record 27 resident welfare associations representing over 25,000 residents have joined hands and written to Traffic police, BBMP, BDA, BWSSB, Karnataka Udyog Mitra, KIADB, Lake Development Authority, and industry bodies like CII, CREDAI and Nasscom. Citizen Action Forum, a pan-Bangalore federation of over 70 RWAs, is also supporting the campaign. In light of the
report by Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES) of IISc, that highlights the unsustainable plan, the groups say the project can be termed as an “ecological disaster”. The preservation of Bellandur lake is critical to the survival of south-east Bangalore. If development is not sustainable in terms of water and other infrastructure, then such
development is clearly counter productive.
AGARA LAKE MAKEOVERLast month, close to 400 volunteers cleared plastic bags,
bottles and non-biodegradable waste from the surroundings of Agara lake on a relaxed Sunday. These were eco-conscious citizens of Koramangala and HSR Layout as part of Save Agara Group. They were responding to the call of Lake Development Authority as per a High Court order last year. On August 15, a 10K run is planned as an awareness
event for citizens to understand what is happening. An Agara Lake Management and Protection Trust is also being formed and may take over the management of the
lake from the LDA.
BOMB THREAT TO WIPRO CAMPUSLast month, Wipro’s Sarjapur Road office received an anonymous letter that threatened to blow up its campus. After the police bomb squad’s thorough check, it turned out to be a hoax. Later, Wipro clarified that it was all part of a security check and they went about with their business as usual.

Choose from these indoor and outdoor herbal solutions to prevent mosquito bites
With threats of mosquito bites and subsequent illnesses like dengue looming large even in the biggest metropolitan cities, preventing mosquito bites has become a top priority.
Indoor Herbal Solutions
One night of sleeping with a mosquito coil produces the effect of smoking around 75 cigarettes. Chemical fumes from vaporiser and mats incite breathing problems, allergy and a range of diseases, which is more harmful than a mosquito bite. Scientists from CIMAP, Lucknow, a frontier plants research laboratory of CSIR, Ministry of Science &Technology, Govt of India, have developed an effective Herbal Repellent Room spray that drives away mosquitoes. JUST SPRAY is a unique blend of plant extracts and aromatic oils (Neem, Citronella, Lemongrass & Cedar wood oil). When sprayed in the room, JUST SPRAY will repel mosquitoes and insects for 8-12 hours. It is non-toxic, safe and environment-friendly.
Outdoor Herbal Solutions
Dengue fever, a fast-growing public health concern, is a mosquito-borne infection transmitted to humans through the bites of the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes during morning and evening hours. School Children and office-going people are most susceptible to daytime mosquito bites.
YESPRAY is a 100% Herbal Mosquito Repellent Body Spray made from Aromatic oils and Herbal Extracts and unlike various other creams, lotions and wipes available, it is a water-based liquid that is safe on the skin, non-toxic, eco-friendly and not made from chemicals. YESPRAY is made from, Tulsi, Lemongrass, Eucalyptus and Palmarosa oils. When applied, YESPRAY keeps mosquitoes away for 4-5 hrs.

He rues that Karnataka has no commercial agriculture. He is the trustee of Bangalore Environment Trust. He was the director of Central Silk Board for 10 years before he retired
in 2010. We are talking about 62-year-old Dr S Raje Urs. After his masters in science, Urs served with the Silk Board for 37 years in various capacities… research assistant, deputy director and joint director before he became the director. More importantly, he is the co-founder and president of HSR 6th Sector Welfare Association for the last 13 years. Urs is also related to Devaraj Urs, Karnataka’s first chief minister. Over to him…

TO ADVERTISE, CALL 98805-85748
Tell us about some of the highlights of your stint at Silk Board?
After my MSc, I served for 37 years in Silk Board. I worked in Mysore, Bengal and Uttar Pradesh; got World Bank aid for sericulture and implemented the project for eight years. I was a consultant for the World Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency and African countries like Ivory Coast and Kenya. What do you think of corporator Latha Murthy?
She is a nice and soft spoken lady but totally non-responsive. We took her around once and showed her the problems – the sand trucks’ makeshift place, the road conditions, the sewage running in storm water drains and how garbage is dumped in the corners and how footpaths are encroached by companies for parking… but nothing has been done on any of these issues till date.
But she has undone something. The trucks and heavy vehicles use 5th Main as a bypass road, making it difficult for children and women to move around. We got the traffic police and BBMP to put up a barricade, but the corporator got it removed. What about MLA Satish Reddy?
He is good and accessible to the public. You call him for a meeting, big or small, and he has no hesitation in sitting with you, patiently hearing you out and even trying to address the problems. He could do whatever little he could do, though he hasn’t redressed all our problems. What should be his priorities now?
He has to fix the bad roads and cancel illegal licences issued for commercial establishments. We don’t’ want HSR to become a commercial area like Koramangala. He should build a multi-storied parking lot in the empty space next to BDA Complex. He should improve the footpaths and stop footpath gardening.
He should get the sewage lines cleaned up and relay it wherever necessary. If it rains, the sewage is on the road. Sector 6 is most affected by this. Agara lake is in a bad shape and the other side of it is being encroached by a giant SEZ project. This should be stopped.
The MLA should take immediate steps to remove all illegal structures coming up in public places like Nandini Cool Joint and set an example. What are the milestones of your sector association?
We got proper drains done, so water didn’t stagnate. Ten years ago, my wife could not step out of home because of massive water-logging. Water even entered many houses at the time. But the officials were good and we got the problem resolved. When there was somebody selling borewell water on encroached BDA land, we got it removed. We had many labour camps in the open areas, including private sites. We got them removed one by one. We got the BWSSB to install a sewage line, though they did a bad job of it. The pipes should have been laid atleast four feet below the ground, but they were just at two feet. Therefore, the residents had to break their toilets and rebuild them at an elevation because of this hazardous problem. Earlier, there were only lights on main roads, not cross roads. However, the authorities would light up the streets whenever even a single house came up on the street. Today, the corporator is not able to do even 1% of the problems we face today, although the problems aren’t of that magnitude. Fortunately, the MLA comes to the rescue quite often.

July 6th was a red letter day for re-elected MLA M Satish Reddy (40). All the presidents and secretaries of all the seven sector associations of HSR Layout met him at his office in BDA Complex. This was part of the meeting
organized by the Federation of HSR Residents Welfare Associations. In the absence of corporator Latha, her husband Narasimha Murthy sat beside the MLA to field the questions from the residents.
The MLA was promptly apprised of the non-committal attitude of the corporator on the memorandum submitted to her by the Federation on 17th December, 2012. Many issues were raised by the residents. While keeping mum on the illegality of Nandini Cool Joint and the area behind it being encroached by vested interests, the MLA assured action on the following things:
1 Footpath work on 24th Main, Sector 2.2 Police patrolling with siren to avert thefts and chain snatching that are on the increase.3 Installation of signal lamps and setting up of a Traffic Police Station in HSR Layout.4 Maintenance of vacant sites and issue of notices to errant residents.5 Cleaning of storm water drains and the underground sanitary lines.6 Action against footpath vendors congesting public roads.7 Instructions to the BWSSB authorities on the proper operation of valves in the distribution of water to the residents. 8 Providing more sodium vapour lamps to all the sectors.9 Shifting of Parangipalya Bus Stand to 19th Main-18th Cross Junction near Cool Joint, which lies in the heart of HSR Layout.

What happens to a nice Bangalore lad (it was not Bengaluru yet) at a talent show in Bombay (it was not Mumbai yet)? He is picked on by the Bombay TV guys who are only out to get him.
The underlying message: whatever you do on stage, make sure you pepper your performance with generous doses of Bollywood or else, no one has the patience.
The judges wait like hungry vultures waiting to swoop down on the kill. Cllaang. The hammer thwacks the bigger-than-life-sized gong – and your show is over. I’m talking about the watered down version of the American ‘The Gong Show’ that appeared on Sony TV back in the 90s.
Welcome to the world of censorship – Bollywood Ishtyle.I had unsuspectingly gone to the sweaty studios of
Bombay to recite poetry. One of the organisers at the studios came up to me and confided: “Make it funny if you want to stay in the show”. I suddenly realised that it was no genteel poetry reading – it was a free-for-all performer bashing experience.
The first participant, a little girl, confidently stepped out on stage and began a Hindustani classical piece. She barely got through the first ‘alaap’, before one of the judges banged the gong and the little girl cried her way off stage.
The next participant was lucky. He delivered a touching rendition of ‘Jab dil hi toot gaya’. The judges unanimously approved his imitation of the famous Sehgal’s quivering voice. And he was in the safe zone.
Then came a ventriloquist. He threw his voice left, right and centre. The audience gasped, waved and clapped. But he couldn’t sustain the judges’ interest. And he went back to his hometown – Obscurity.

MishMash is a college dream turned reality of Chethan Reddy and Rohini Boppana. And already, the HSR residents are celebrating their resto-bar’s first anniversary this month. After
working in well-known companies, they tied the nuptial knot and decided to extend their life partnership to business as well. With the universal truth of “Rain or Shine, people will always dine”, they filled a gap in HSR Layout that lacked places offering multiple cuisines with a sublime ambience.
MishMash is a 150-cover food island spread over 4000 square feet. It brings alive a selection of the most exquisite flavours from India and around. “We offer feted recipes from the coasts of South India to the historic North-west Frontier fare cooked in traditional tandoor,” says Chethan, with much fervour. “We transport overseas riches from the Smokey grill houses, mothers’ kitchens, lively marketplaces and unhurried tables in Italy, England, America, Lebanon, Hungary, Mexico and more.” Therefore, the resto-bar’s tagline: A Bit of Everything.
MishMash offers over 200 options to choose from: Indian, Tandoor, Coastal and select dishes from around the globe. Helping the couple with their mission is chef Ramu’s obsession on culinary skills. With good reason. He is a veteran with over 25 years of experience with the Taj

Group of Hotels where he has won several awards and accolades. For starters, he recommends Sharabi Jhinga and Sear Fish Tawa Fry. For the main course, it is a throw up between Kacchi Ghosht ki Biryani, Murg Hara Dhaniya and Jack Daniels Chicken. For desserts, it can be Blueberry Cheese Cake or Rich Chocolate Cake, the ever-popular kulfi or the famed ice cream flavours from Orchard Fresh.
If you are looking for some more culinary directions, here are the couple’s favorites: Hummus with Pita Bread, Bruschetta, Caesar Salad, Kacchi Ghost ki Biryani, Hara Bara Kebab, Adrakki Lamb Chops, Rock Prawns, Strawberry Milkshake, Blueberry Cheesecake and Masala Buttermilk. “HSR layout’s USP is MishMash,” says ‘Foodaholick’ on Zomato. “I love everything at MishMash. The food quality is simply beyond words and is total value for money.”
Arun Menon is just as upbeat: “MishMash is a great place to hang out with friends and
family. The ambience is nice and the seating is different. The service was pleasant and spiffy too.”
Like any restaurant, the well-stocked bar is an integral part of MishMash too. It is well stocked with Indian and international brands, across categories. Some of the barman’s cocktail recommendations include Caprioska (vodka-based), Mint Julep (whisky-based), Pink Lady (gin-based) and Caribbean Iced Tea (mix of five spirits). Among mocktails, you could choose between Mango Brazilia, Thirsty Treat, Gingerade and Shirley Temple. No wonder, many high profile patrons visit the restaurant on a regular basis. They range from government officials to film personalities. However, the list is confidential.
Rohini has the last word: “Having come a long way since we began last year, we are going to make some exciting changes in the restaurant soon. Expect new dishes and an improved ambience.”
