President’s Message by Matt Smith

Dear Members,

Think back. How did you get to where you are today? Wherever you're at, you got by without a little help from your friends, right? You did it your way. There's always an exception, so I'm guessing that could in fact be the case. But it's probably not. (The Wonder Years theme song was right all along.) My parents, my wife, managers, colleagues, bands, coaches, authors, friends, and strangers. They've all impacted my outlook on everything. I've realized that it's really vital to become aware of who and what you pay atten-tion to. Let's give these things a title. "Mentors" are too vague...I will use "Influencers." And yes, even shows like the Wonder Years fall into that cate-gory for me. There have been countless good speakers that I've been fortunate enough to have listened to over the years. A handful have influenced books that I've read and even strategies that I've used to make my family better. People like Dan Stalp, Denise Mills, and Don Gallagher. And Harry Campbell. There's an opportunity cost to these takeaways though. For example, maybe I'm forego-ing some sleep or watching a game on TV to read that book. A lot of these people probably don't even know that they've made a positive influence in my life. I should tell them, and I guess if they read our newsletter I just did lol. The funny thing is that I don't even know most of these people. People like Coach K, Malcolm Gladwell, and Brett McKay. And yeah, Kevin Arnold. Which brings me to a key point. I had dinner with Harry Campbell during the Leader-ship Olathe graduation dinner, but I can't say that I know him. Here's the ironic part- I remember both Denise and Dan saying great things about him during our regular meetings a few years back. I was paying attention to them and so the lightbulb went off when I saw his name on the program of that event. I knew that his presentation was going to produce some key takeaways before he uttered a word. I highly encourage you to clear your calendar so that you can attend the October meeting to see him. And better yet, maybe even reach out to someone that you just might be influencing yourself. Invite him or her too.

Sincerely,

Matt Smith

Diaper Drive and Family Volunteer Night

Happy Bottoms, Kansas City’s Diaper Bank!

Family Volunteer Night

Monday, October 26

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Happy Bottom’s mission: Working with social service agency partners to provide diapers to low-income families

while raising awareness of diaper need in our community.

SHRMJC Volunteers will count, repackage, and fulfill diaper orders. The shift is set up as an assembly line that is

perfect for team building. With the help of at least forty volunteers a week, Happy Bottoms distributes over

120,000 diapers a month and that number is growing quickly.

One in five Kansas City area kids lives in poverty. For many, diapers remain an overlooked area of need despite

today’s best outreach efforts. Safety-net programs such as SNAP (food stamps) and WIC (women infants chil-

dren) do NOT cover diapers. This is a huge expense for low-income families costing an estimated $80-100 per

month. An estimated 21,000+ children in the Kansas City area aren't receiving the diapers they need. Learn

more at: www.happybottoms.org

We you hope you and your family can join the SHRMJC family for a night of fun and purpose! If you can’t volun-

teer, we will be hosting a Diaper Drive at our October 8 Chapter Meeting!

interesting people while catching up with long-standing friends.

SHRMJC Roundtable: Re-Cap by Tina Pool, Director of Membership

2016 Benefit Renewals – How We’re Coping Employers will be facing increased costs as they go through the 2016 re-newal process. The good news (according to Media Cost Trend: Behind the Numbers 2016 prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers [PwC]) is that the aver-age increase amount will be 6.5 percent compared to 2015’s 6.8 percent. The report identifies four major trends over the last 10 years:

Healthcare spending has leveled off, but is not decreasing. Cost-sharing and curtailing inpatient care slows consumer use of health services. The Affordable Care Act had minimal direct effect on employer health costs.

Inflationary factors include new high-priced specialty drugs that promise cures for diseases and recovery costs from major health care breaches. The Local Scene SHRMJC members discussed the trends and how their companies are strengthening the bottom line while bet-ter equipping employees to make informed health discussions at September’s Roundtable event. Both small and large employers represented offer standard benefits (medical, dental, vision, IRA/401(k), profit sharing, STD/LTD, supplemental plans, wellness programs and EAP). Cost Reduction Coping Strategies SHRMJC members are designing plans to reduce employer costs. Strategies include:

Higher deductibles and co-pays. Narrow provider networks. Employee health assessment requirement. Employer contribution to HSA plans vary by the employee physical results. Offering Telehealth services (see a physician virtually, or hospitals monitor your condition). Using third party services to refer employees to providers with reduced costs for services and fees;

provide employee medical bill reconciliation assistance; and to make smart decisions between medi-cations.

Make getting healthy fun. If employees participate in a competitive wellness program based upon the number of steps they take, they receive a free Fit Bit.

Discouraging Emergency Room use by offering a $zero co-pay at Urgent Care centers. All members agreed that effective communication is critical to reducing health care costs. Meaningful infor-mation that communicates the options of convenience, time and cost-savings is targeted. Employers are also investing in risk mitigation by hiring outside companies to check vulnerabilities to HIPAA recordkeeping, IT systems and HR practices.

SHRMJC Roundtable discussions are informative and fun! Suggest 2016 topics at [email protected].

Legislative Update: Kansas DOL Jobs Report - August 2015

TOPEKA, Kan. – The state’s August seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.6 percent, unchanged from July and increased from 4.3 percent in August 2014. Seasonally adjusted figures show Kansas gained 4,400 private sector jobs since last year, or 0.4 percent. Kansas nonfarm jobs increased by 1,000 jobs, or 0.1 percent, since August 2014. Since last month, Kansas declined by 2,000 seasonally adjusted private sector jobs, or 0.2 percent. The state lost 3,000 seasonally adjusted total non-farm jobs, or 0.2 percent since July 2015. Not seasonally adjusted figures show Kansas gained 6,300 private sector jobs since last year, or 0.5 percent. Kan-sas nonfarm jobs increased by 3,000 jobs, a 0.2 percent increase since August 2014. Since July, private sector jobs decreased by 5,200, or 0.4 percent. The state lost 4,000 total nonfarm jobs over the month, or 0.3 percent. “A survey of Kansans shows that the number of people in the labor force declined over the summer months, leav-ing many employers with positions to fill. This has led to an increase in hours worked by existing employees in order to perform the work needed,” Tyler Tenbrink, the Kansas Department of Labor’s Senior Labor Economist said. The not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August was 4.5 percent, down from 5 percent in July and down from 4.7 percent one year ago. There were 11,237 initial claims for unemployment benefits in August 2015, down from 11,553 in July and up from 9,953 in August 2014. There were 74,176 continued claims in August, up from 67,149 the previous month and up from 62,606 in August 2014. “Kansas workers continue to earn more mon-ey as private sector wages grew by 3.6% compared to this time last year. Plus, an an-nual increase in job openings of 5.3% shows opportunities exist for job seekers to partici-pate in the Kansas economy,” Kansas Secre-tary of Labor, Lana Gordon said. Additionally, the 2015 Job Vacancy Survey, an annual survey of employers’ job openings, has been completed by the Kansas Department of Labor. Since last year, job vacancies in Kansas have increased by 2,383 to 47,269. The 2015 Job Vacancy Survey is available on the Kansas Labor Information Center website, here. Kansas labor market information for August is available here. Data provided is preliminary and subject to monthly revisions and annual benchmarks by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Information on procedures for producing Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) estimates is avail-able on the BLS website here. Procedures for producing Current Employment Statistics (CES) estimates are avail-able on the BLS website here. PLEASE NOTE: The September 2015 Labor Report will be released on Friday, October 16.
