Macquarie University: A WORKPLACE LIKE NO OTHER

Dear colleague,

Thank you your interest in this position.

The Faculty of Arts makes a strong contribution to the University and represents 27 per cent of the student body. It is also a strong research performer: in the 2015 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) research evaluation round, 100 per cent of Macquarie’s research activity was rated as performing at world standard or higher and it ranks in the top 100 in the 2017 Times Higher Education and QS discipline rankings. The Faculty attracts students across the curriculum, including a major cohort of Open Universities Australia students, coursework and research postgraduates, and a high number of higher degree research students.

As a faculty, we have the opportunity to do something that is rare among research-intensive universities and faculties, and that is to excel in research while taking the student experience, especially the learning experience, very seriously. To achieve this, the faculty has invested heavily in developing high-quality digital platforms for the delivery of selected units, and we are committed to developing the resources to enable this process to be rolled out to many more units in future years. The faculty currently contributes about six per cent of the University’s international students and this is an area in which we are looking to expand.

The faculty has a friendly and collegial culture. As the Executive Dean, I set great store by that as I believe the working environment should be one in which people feel comfortable to express their views and ideas.

Under the leadership of our Vice-Chancellor, we are committed to defining this University as one that is led by its values and by a commitment to excellence in the delivery of the core academic activities. We are also committed to being a university of service to all our members – past and present – and to the wider community. This is a highly attractive mission for this faculty, and we are now looking for an outstanding individual who will not only bring to us a record of academic excellence in law or a related area, but who will also join us in realising our ambitions and in establishing our University as a distinctive and admired presence in the Australian and international higher education landscape.

8 A WORLD-CLASS CAREER. DEAN OF MACQUARIE LAW SCHOOL

In the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University, students and staff work together both within and across disciplinary boundaries to ask questions about socially complex problems, identify paths of research, analyse and communicate ideas in creative formats, and reflect on the skills and knowledge they will need to understand the world, past and present.

Where you will work

RESEARCH AND TEACHING EXCELLENCE

The Faculty of Arts offers undergraduate and postgraduate coursework and research degrees, is home to a number of internationally recognised research centres and has the majority of registrations in the University’s Master of Research program.

The faculty comprises 12 departments: Ancient History; Anthropology; English; Geography and Planning; Indigenous Studies; International Studies; School of Law; Media, Music, Communication and Cultural Studies; Modern History, Politics and International Relations; Philosophy; Security Studies and Criminology; and Sociology. The faculty is ranked in the top 100 Arts and humanities disciplines globally by the Times Higher Education 2016 World University subject rankings.

Distance and blended learning is an important aspect of the faculty’s learning and teaching strategy and many departments provide Open Universities Australia programs. We were also responsible for developing Macquarie’s first Massive Open Online Course, and currently, a significant investment is being made to create high-quality digital platforms for the delivery of our new Bachelor of Archaeology, which is intended to provide a template for significant further development across the faculty’s curriculum.

Our signature Participation and Community Engagement (PACE) program encourages students to use their skills and talents to connect with local and global communities. They contribute to projects ranging from building houses for homeless people in Peru to practising law in the Sumatran jungle.

In 2015, the Faculty of Art’s annual research income was over $3.7 million. We currently host two multidisciplinary research centres: the Macquarie University Ancient Cultures Research Centre and the Macquarie University Research Centre for Agency, Value and Ethics, as well as a number of faculty-based research centres. These include the Australian Centre for Ancient Numismatic Studies, the Centre for Environmental Law and the Centre for Media History. Other flagship projects include the Big History Project, Gallipoli Centenary Research Project, and the Digital Imaging and 3D Printing Project, which is making fragile museum artefacts accessible to all.

We are committed to expanding the reach and impact of our research and teaching by developing strategic partnerships with business, community and government both in Australia and internationally. We take a broad view of the scope and drivers for productive external engagements and collaborate within a range of frameworks from Australian Research Council Linkage Projects to convened research projects, research consultancies, community partnerships, and media productions.
