ABOUT US
Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) as an integrated steel plant of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is one of the largest steel plants in the country. With an annual turnover of over Rs. 6400 crore, BSP is a leading public sector steel producing unit. It is proud of its 50 year tradition of quality, productivity and Human Resource Development (HRD). Human Resource Development (HRD) unit of BSP has played its key part in integrating the process of HRD with the overall corporate vision of the organisation.
Originally established in 1959 to meet the needs of skilled workforce with an effort to assimilate technology adopted from abroad, HRD has grown with the growth of the industry. Today it covers annually the training of over 15,000 employees / fresh entrants under various need based training programmes. This not only meets the present requirements, but also keeps the manpower tuned to accept any challenges of the future in the areas of HI-Tech and to overcome the effects of obsolescence. Besides building in competence, HRD has integrated the mind and technology through HRD interventions from time to time.
HRD provides services in training technology covering a wide spectrum of areas like:
Assessment of training needs Design and execution of need - based training Preparation of training modules Training Audit Consultancy in Training
THE ORGANISATION SET UP
HRD of BSP consists of three distinct entities, the Bhilai Technical Institute (BTI), the Bhilai Management Training Centre (BMTC) and a network of Plant Training Centres.
The BTI is the central training complex catering to the training needs of skilled workforce / technical training.
In BMTC, the institute for management training, the focus is on development of management and leadership skills of executives at junior and middle level.
The Plant Training Centres have been established in all major shops for on-the -job training with the objective of bringing training to the shopfloor.
PROFICIENCY
The full-time faculty range from successful training professionals having plant experience to skilled instructors. They are backed up by a large number of specialists from shops and academic institutions . Completing the team are HRD's competent administrative, secretarial and catering personnel who are experienced in creating just the right atmosphere for the courses making participants and visitors feel at home. LOCATION
Situated in the Durg district of State of Chhattisgarh, Bhilai is 300 mts. above sea level and is connected with all major cities of the country by train via Durg Railway Station. Access by Air is through Raipur, the capital, 40 km. away from Durg.
Set in the premises of BSP, just outside the Works, the central complex, BTI provides course members and visitors an environment conducive to learning.
INITIAL TRAINING PROGRAMME
The training of fresh intakes is a major training effort in building up the careers of BSPs technical and managerial professionals.
As per requirement, fresh engineering, management, science graduates, diploma holders and other skilled / semi-skilled personnel from various educational and professional institutions in the country are inducted into the organisation. They are put through long duration training programmes, consisting of :
Institute Training followed by Shop / Functional Based Training for Management Trainees ( 1year)
Institute Training followed by on-the-job training for Senior Technician-cum-Operative trainees (18 months), Technician-cum-Operative trainees ( 6 months / 18 months), Operative Trainees and Operative-cum-Technician Trainees ( 12 months ). During Institute Training they are imparted intensive trade-specific workshop / Laboratory based training.
MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT COURSES
HRD conducts a hierarchy of courses for the managers of the Plant to meet the demands of changing managerial roles in their career.
Managers at junior level undergo `Management Development Programme I & II' which help them to see how they can enhance quality, productivity and profitability by their actions.
`Action Leadership' , `Microplanning' and ' Enhancing Managerial Effectiveness ' development courses prepare middle and senior level managers to a challenging task of running a functional unit.
Besides these significant courses in career, HRD provides a wide range of short modular courses for managers from time to time viz :
Finance management. General and Gas Safety. Report Writing. Statistical Quality Control Cost Effectiveness. Systematic Maintenance Mgmt. HRM for Line Managers Materials Management. Instructional Techniques for Occasional Trainers. Stress Management
For the development of supervisors and employees in staff function the courses conducted are :
Supervisory Development Programme. Staff Development Course. Communication and Team Building.
LABORATORY BASED TRAINING
Laboratory and Workshops have been established in the BTI complex to help the skilled / semiskilled workforce to acquire ` Specific Basic Skills ' in engineering and Hi-Tech area. The training is imparted through modular based training programmes.
Trainees can simulate plant situations in lab and also develop Diagnostic and Fault finding skills. The areas covered are :
Trouble shooting of AC motors. Industrial Hydraulics / Pneumatics. Fasteners and fastening devices. Maintenance/Adjustment of brakes. Vulcanising/Repair of conveyor Belts. Coupling fitting and Alignment. Electrical Fault Finding. Material Handling. Maintenance & Testing of AC motors.
Back-lash adjustment of Spiral Bevel Gears. Basic Digital electronics. Engineering Metrology. Key Fitting. Bearing Fitting. Basic Instrumentation Electro hydraulics
HRD has also established a computer based `Open Learning Centre ' which helps trainees to self-learn at a pace and time convenient to them. Software package on various technical, technological and non-technical subjects guide the trainees in learning. A trainee can check his progress through in-built tests. TECHNICAL DISSEMINATION PROGRAMMES HRD provides various short duration courses on topics related to steel and its associated technology. They include :
Coke Making . Sinter making . Iron Making . Steel making in BOF. Bloom and Slab Casting. Computerised Maint. Management System. Maintenance of plant and equipment.
Generation / Distribution of Power. Repair & building of Furnaces / Ladles. Rolling of Steel & Structurals / rails. Rolling of Plates. EOT Cranes. Machine Tools. Transformers & Switchgears.
In order to build competency and equip people with changing requirements in the industry, training is regularly imparted on :
Windows, MS Office, ORACLE and other computer based programmes. Standard practices through Unit Training ( on-the-job training) PLCs and Microprocessors. Automation and Control. Thyristor control for DC Machine. Environment Management. Bearing maintenance. Lubrication Practice. Training Programmes under Unit Training Scheme
CUSTOM DESIGNED COURSES
Every organisation has its own culture, objectives and needs. HRD has successfully understood these requirements and designed and organised training programmes for customers from other organisations also.
The programmes are developed following a joint discussion and review with the customer to make them relevant. The courses consist of both class-room sessions and on-the-job training.

SUPPORT TO TECHNICAL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS HRD caters to the need of bridging the gap between industry and academic institutions by extending its training facilities to undergraduate students of engineering and management colleges. PROGRAMME FACILITIES
Lecture Halls and Conference Rooms
Main sessions are conducted in the Lecture Halls. Group discussions, exercises and meetings take place in air-conditioned Conference Rooms.
Two big Assembly Halls located at BTI can accommodate 250 persons each, and is used for organisational communication exercises, etc.
In addition, there are 18 training centres in major shops equipped with facilities to support classroom based training and on-the-job training .
Audio-Visual Aids
Audio-visual aids like LCD / DLP, Overhead and Slide Projectors, TV, VCR, Public Address System are available in the Institute and Training Centres. Besides, more than 100 films and video cassettes on subjects like Iron & Steel Making, General sciences, Supervisory & Management Development, Safety and General topics are available, which are extensively used in the training programmes.
Library
The air-cooled libraries located at BTI and BMTC house around 60000 volumes on technical, management and other subjects. It subscribes to both national and international journals. They give an excellent opportunity to update information.
Hostel Facilities
There are furnished Hostels for Management Trainees and technical trainees.
Facilities for outdoor and indoor sports and recreation are available to hostel residents.
