HR MATTERS President’s Message Chad V. Sorenson, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, 2016 SHRM Jacksonville President The first half of 2016 has been great for SHRM Jacksonville. Our attendance at the monthly chapter meetings is consistently greater than the same months last year. We also had a great 2016 SHRM Jacksonville Annual Conference and raised a record amount of money for the SHRM Foundation (see page 3), setting the stage to surpass our top 15 finish last year of SHRM chapter contributions nationwide. SHRM Jacksonville has also been awarded the Silver EXCEL Award for 2015 from SHRM, in addition to becoming a 2015 SHRM Foundation Chapter Champion. These couldn’t have been achieved without the excellent work of our board of directors and the support we receive from our members! I would also like to congratulate our outstanding student chapters and in particular to Nova Southeastern University for earning the SHRM Student Chapter Superior Merit Award and to Webster University for the Honorable Mention Award. SHRM Jacksonville is proud to have such active and professional student chapters! SHRM Jacksonville is active and making a difference in our community and the profession in Northeast Florida! Our August meeting will be held jointly with the Northeast Florida Chapter of the Association for Talent Development (ATD). More information and registration details will be listed on our website this week. Finally, don’t forget to register for the 2016 HR Florida Conference and Expo. This conference has been approved for 14 SHRM PDC’s and 14 HRCI credits and with more than 100 concurrent sessions to choose from, there is something for everyone! SHRM Foundation Updates
SHRM Jacksonville 2016 Conference Silent Auction Results – New Record Amount Raised!
The silent auction was a huge success this year thanks to all of our amazing vendors who donated items and to those of you who purchased all of the amazing packages. We can’t thank you enough for your generosity and support. We raised over $5000 for the SHRM Foundation in just one day and it’s all because of you! Don’t forget, when you are out shopping with your gift cards or using the items you purchased through the silent auction, please remember to thank the wonderful businesses who supported our event. We couldn’t have done it without their generosity!
SHRM Certification Scholarships 2016 – Deadline is this week
The SHRM Foundation will award 185 scholarships in 2016 to assist HR professionals in obtaining their SHRM certification. SHRM members may apply for this $750 award to support their pursuit of professional SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification.
Application Deadline: July 15, 2016 (awarded in October)
Funds may be used for any combination of test preparation-such as SHRM Certification Preparation tools and/or exam fees. Scholarship recipients will be required to provide documentation of their certification expenses before receiving their award check.
Criteria/Application Process: • You must have a current SHRM membership to apply for an award and the membership must be active throughout the year in which you receive the award. SHRM student members are not eligible for this program. (View scholarships for SHRM student members online.) • You must be preparing to sit for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification exam. Members who have already taken a SHRM certification exam in the 2016 calendar year are also eligible to apply. • Employees or board members of SHRM or the SHRM Foundation or other SHRM affiliate (not including chapters), and members of their immediate family are not eligible to apply for SHRM Foundation grants, awards or scholarships. • The application includes contact information and a series of short answer questions about your volunteer experience and your career aspirations. You will also be asked to upload a current resume that includes your SHRM/SHRM Foundation volunteer experience, and one letter of reference. Reference letters should be addressed to the “SHRM Foundation Scholarship Review Committee” and should provide insight into your character, career and volunteer accomplishments, work ethic, values and need for the scholarship. • See more at: https://shrm.org/about/foundation/scholarships/pages/shrm-certification-scholarships.aspx#sthash.IlEily4t.dpuf
SHRM Jacksonville is looking for an excited volunteer to serve as the Marketing Chair. We would like to thank Kerry Schicker for serving in the position, but due to changing responsibilities at work, Kerry had to step down. The Marketing Chair is responsible for publishing the monthly newsletter, assisting with the promotion of our events, and working with our Social Media Chair to spread the word about SHRM Jacksonville. This person must be comfortable with designing and producing our newsletter. If you are interested, please email Chad Sorenson at [email protected]
