Overlooking a vast polo field just shy of a kilometre long, Tintswalo at Waterfall’s access to wide open spaces and country air sets it well apart from other establishments within the Johannesburg metropolis. Surrounded by lush greenery and burbling streams, and perched above a man-made dam, the hotel truly is a country getaway in the heart of the city.

ArchitectureTintswalo at Waterfall was designed as an opulently finished, luxurious stable. Featuring double-volume spacing, roof rafters and a striking combination of red face brick, wood, stone and iron, Tintswalo at Waterfall is a dramatic backdrop for any occasion.

Gleaning inspiration from the equestrian estate surrounds, Tintswalo owner, Gaye Corbett, and commissioned interior decorator and personal friend, Caroline Wright, went to work on creating the elegant space, while still retaining the equine theme. The hotel interior is dotted with horse artefacts and the walls are decorated with magnificent equestrian artworks, lit from overhead by spectacular metal chandeliers.

Taking care not to push the themed décor too far, Corbett and Wright have managed to perfect balance with the use of tasteful fabrics and neat equipment combined with country-chic class and attention to detail. The overall effect is a welcoming home away from home.

Luxury accommodationTintswalo at Waterfall boasts 16 spacious super-king suites, offering ultimate luxury to 32 guests sharing. Each enormous suite is furnished with the finest finishes and amenities, including underfloor heating, heated towel rails and a private balcony overlooking the beautiful estate grounds. The suites all lead off an expansive double-volume corridor, having been designed to resemble stable doors leading off the interior of a rather elegant barn.

Each and every suite is afforded its own distinguished personality, being decorated in honour of 16 beautiful horse breeds of the world. The crisp black and whites of the Lipizzaner suite set it apart from the colourful, eclectic Mustang suite. Other suites include the raw, rustic Basuto suite, and the rich, warm tones found in the Akhal-Teke suite – all uniquely decorated, but equal in style and opulence.

Delicate cuisine Guests both staying over and visiting during the day are able to enjoy delicious meals from the Tintswalo at Waterfall dining room, which has been fittingly named ‘The Feedroom’ – and feed you, they shall! Offering a comprehensive three-course a la carte menu from which to order, Tintswalo at Waterfall serves up mouth-watering home-style meals, mastered by Irish executive chef, Gabriel Harkin.

Incorporating fusion cooking, with both continental and local influences, Harkin sets out to perfect the natural flavours of food, beautifully plated and easily paired with local and international wines and spirits.

Creating a wine list to complement the menu was a labour of love, toiled over by the entire Tintswalo at Waterfall management team. General manager, Martin Greyling, worked tirelessly with Chef Gabriel to create an exciting and current beverage list that offers a variety of local and international wines and spirits, to meet the personal preferences of any sommelier.

An event venue like no other With its wide open spaces and natural grandeur, Tintswalo at Waterfall has become a sought-after

venue to host events, conferences and ostentatious product launches. The hotel’s characteristic ambience is one of soft lighting, subtle splendour and classic, understated style, making it an effortlessly beautiful backdrop for any event. The hotel caters for cocktail parties of up to 180 people, and gorgeous sit-down gala dinners of up to 160 people. Cocktail and set menus are created especially per event, with the expert guidance of Tintswalo’s executive chef.

For smaller events, Tintswalo at Waterfall offers a variety of flexible options in a number of beautiful seating areas. Intimate parties can be hosted on The Feedroom patio, overlooking the polo field, in the cosy wine cellar, on the veranda on a balmy summer’s afternoon, or tucked away in the upstairs library. For the ultimate intimate dining, Tintswalo at Waterfall offers a luxurious private dining room and lounge, serviced by a private butler and waitron.

Equestrian eventsAlthough Tintswalo at Waterfall overlooks such an impressive polo field, the estate does not host any polo or equestrian events. The Waterfall Equestrian Estate is home to a state-of-the-art stabling facility, which is made available solely to the estate residents

and their privately owned horses. While the equestrian facilities are all privately held,

guests at Tintswalo at Waterfall are often treated to the sight of residents exercising their horses on the field, some of whom are resplendent, tall steeds, and some of whom are delightful, stout ponies.

Where to find themTintswalo at Waterfall is conveniently located a short drive across the road from the Waterfall Polo Estate, which is a local hub of equestrian activity, including the prestigious BMW International Polo Series. Collaborating annually with BMW on this event, Tintswalo at Waterfall plays host to international polo teams and VIPs.
