WELCOME BACK TO TERM 4
We hope you had a wonderful, relaxed holiday in preparation for
the busy term 4 ahead. This term is going to be very exciting for
students as there are lots of planned learning opportunities within
and outside of school. The senior students are working hard on
their Exhibition. This is the first year Heany Park students have
held an Exhibition, the culmination of their learning over their
seven years of primary school and three years of being a part of an
IB school. This will be open to parents on 7 November, so keep that
date free. We have house athletics on 30 October, we will be
requesting parent helpers for this event, so if you are interested
in this keep this date free too. A SPECIAL WELCOME TO OUR 2019 PREP
STUDENTS On Monday 15 October, we start our transition program for
new students for next year. We are holding six
sessions over the term during which we will have parent
education opportunities held in the staff room. An evening session
is also going to be held for parents of 2019 students on 23 October
at 6:30pm. SCHOOL ENROLMENTS in 2019 – workforce planning If your
child is leaving Heany Park PS in 2019 or if you have a new
enrolment for a sibling entering Prep, please contact the office
ASAP or email to let us know.
CLASS PLACEMENTS IN 2019 In term 4 we commence the process of
organising students into classes for 2019. Students are asked to
name six students who they work well with and enable each other’s
learning. Teachers use this along with their knowledge of students’
academic, social and emotional skills to place students into class
groupings that they believe will maximise learning for all.

School is a nurturing environment where children are encouraged
to work with diverse people learning to be open minded, view things
from multiple perspectives and tolerate differences. Students are
encouraged to problem solve to resolve conflict and find solutions
to meet the needs of the group. If you have any information that
you would like us to take into account when forming class groups
and allocating teachers, please let me know by 31 October. I would
like this in writing by email or letter, addressed as ‘Confidential
for The Principal Team’. Please do not expect us to use information
from past years as we would hope that any prior issues are now
resolved as children mature and grow and overcome any
differences.
PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS At Heany Park PS we do not organise
whole school parent teacher interview nights for everybody at the
same time. We celebrate student learning and share this with
families throughout the year at different opportunities e.g.
Celebration of Learning Assemblies,
Open Classrooms, Three Way Conferences etc. Some children have
individual learning plans and the teacher will initiate a meeting
with families. However you are always welcome to make a time to
have a parent teacher interview at any time. Just contact your
child’s teacher and they will be willing to organise a parent
teacher meeting to discuss your needs. Never leave concerns and
questions about your child’s progress and learning unanswered.
Always make a time and discuss your child’s education with their
teacher. If after this you still have any unanswered questions or
concerns please make a time to discuss this with Mrs Dickinson or
myself.
VISUAL ART EXHBITION
Congratulations to the students who had their work selected for
the Art Competition held at the Wellington Village Shopping Centre.
Students will be acknowledged and prizes will be awarded at
assembly on Friday.
PERFORMING ARTS CONCERT Students in Years Prep to 2 will
showcase their talents and learning in the Performing Arts
curriculum. On 1 November at 2:30pm. Please keep this date free to
attend the concert.
COMPASS Please ensure you are able to access Compass as this is
our communication method. Semester 2 reports will be sent in this
way again, as they were in Semester 1. WALKATHON Money can still be
handed in this term.
School Council will be held on 17 October at 7:00pm. I received
a letter yesterday from a concerned prospective parent around our
school fence and safety of the children. This issue has been
discussed many times at school council, debating between the need
for a high fence at a cost of around $120,000 and what else this
money could be spent on to support learning. I am interested in
hearing any other parents views on this if you wish to email in and
share them please do. All views will be presented to Council.

Visit to our new Sister School
Heany Park Primary School applied for, and was allocated a
school in Indonesian through the Asia Education
Foundation BRIDGE Indonesia program.
So on September 23rd, Alicia Hendy and I began a visit to our
new Indonesian Sister School SD Budi Utama, situated
in Yoygakarta, Central Java.
The school was set up by a private individual who provides
ongoing support to the school.
On Monday 24th September we met the Principal Bapak Blasius
Rastana and the two Deputy Principals. Discussion
centred on the premise of how our two schools would work
together with both the staff and the students.
Later we met members of the School Board and had further
discussions about what their school wanted in the
way of curriculum development
Each day we met the students in their classes. Each class we
entered involved speaking to the class about our
school and interesting parts of Victoria. Often we read a story
during the English classes. One special item brought
from Australia was a jar of Vegemite and as the Year 4-6
students, and the Principal, tasted the special ‘treat’
various reactions were encountered!
Alicia Hendy’s class had sent a video with her to Indonesia
about our school. So on Wednesday we were treated
to a trip to see the sights of Yogyakarta with a group of
students and their teacher. We visited the Yogyakarta
Museum, the Dutch fort and part of the tourist market of
Marlioboro. The students made a video of our journey
and the students at our school will be viewing this video. We
also visited the ancient Hindu temple of Prambanan
after school.
On Thursday we walked with Year Six students to their kitchen
garden atop the second floor of the Budi Utama
Secondary School. They harvested a variety of vegetables,
cleaned them, then they set up their stall back at the
primary school. By the end of the day they had sold all produce
to staff and parents. We then visited the
Kindergarten, which would be equivalent to our Foundation
students. They were housed just down the road in a
building whose façade resembled a castle. In this building a
creche and kindergarten operated.
Later that afternoon we were treated to the dress rehearsal of
the equivalent to our ‘Big Night Out’. The caste
consisted of volunteers from year four to six, junior and senior
secondary students. It was an amazing display!
Sadly we left SD Budi Utama on Friday to fly to Jakarta to meet
and network with other teachers from around
Australia who had visited, or were about to visit their current
or new sister schools.
Many teachers had not visited Jakarta before and and our group
visited the sites of a car-free central Jakarta on
Sunday, the National Monument (MONAS) and the Istiqlal Mosque
and the Catholic Cathedral, Pasar Baru, an old
market, Sunda Kelapa, the old port, a new art gallery and some
great restaurants showcasing many great regional
foods such as padang food.
We were given a briefing on the new Indonesian national
curriculum and networked with teachers about our
sister schools. Many friendships were made on this visit to
Indonesia and email contact will enable us to share
information about our sister schools into the future.

Heany Park OSHClub
Heany Park OSHClub is a diverse, active and engaging learning
environment where all children feel safe, supported and
comfortable. The welcoming and nurturing environment provided by
passionate staff allows children to continue to develop as
life-long learners. The respectful and caring relationships at the
service are integral in continuing to establish and build upon
fostering children’s sense of agency and independence. Each child
is an active member of the community, with the program providing a
platform to express opinions, make decisions and implement change
and action with effective and positive communication. The unique
qualities and attributes that each child possesses are recognized
and supported as the program provides equal learning opportunities
with the endeavour facilitate the needs of all children. SunSmart
Just a reminder now that it is term 4, that all children need to
have a wide brim hat in order to be able to play outside. So please
ensure they have one in their school bags so they do not miss out
on outside play.
New staff member As you all may already know, with the departure
of Nathan at the end of last term, we now have Mel on board. She is
acting as coordinator until a permanent replacement is found. She
is currently working towards a Bachelor in Education. She has
recently stepped up to the casual coordinator role, having
previously worked in this role at two other services. She is
excited to get to know the Heany Park community! Service contact

HEANY PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL - PARENT VOLUNTEERS WELCOME
Working With Children Checks
Parent volunteers are a valuable asset to our school. Their
contribution and support to our staff and students over the years
has helped make Heany Park Primary School the wonderful school it
is today. There are many opportunities for parents to become
involved with the school such as assisting teachers and students
with classroom activities and reading, volunteering to assist at
excursions, camps or sporting events, running programs such as our
monthly book club, student banking and much more. In order to
ensure we provide a safe and secure environment for our children
and all members of our school community, including our parent
volunteers, School Council asks that all parents volunteering at
Heany Park Primary School hold a current Working With Children
Check. This requirement is also in line with the Department of
Education and Early Childhood Development guidelines and the
Working With Children Act 2005. To apply for a Working With
Children Check simply go to www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au
and
follow the instructions. Please ensure that you list Heany Park
Primary School as an organisation
you are volunteering with.
There is no cost to apply for a Working With Children Check for
parent volunteers. There may however be a cost involved with
obtaining a passport size photo. A card will be issued to you once
all checks have been passed and this card will be valid for 5 years
and can be used when volunteering at sporting clubs, kindergartens
and so on, providing the organisation is listed on your
application. We trust that you can see the value and importance of
obtaining a WWCC. School Council will assist in any way we can. If
you have any questions please email us on
[email protected] Thank you for your support
