History of the companyIt all started in 1939 when Bill Hewlett and David

Packard created HP when they worked on an audiooscillator in a garage in Palo Alto, California. After WaltDisney bought several of these oscillators for their latest

movie, Fantasia, the company was off and running.

So how did this small company expand from a garage tobeing the world leader in information technology? While

HP began as a company that produced all sorts ofelectronic products, their first focus was on test products

like counters and voltmeters.

Later on in the sixties, HP ended up becoming thefounder of Silicon Valley. They got into semiconductorsin the early sixties and by 1966, they entered the

computer market with the HP 2100and the HP1000.These were sturdy models that lasted for a good twentyyears before more advancements saw screen keys and theHP 2640 rise to the occasion.

Here is an interesting fact: while HP is given credit asproducing the first PC, they avoided alienating theirmarket by calling it a calculator!

1984 saw the emergence of their first inkjet and laserprinters. These were meant for the desktop. Later on inthe 90s, HP rose in popularity, marketing their computersto the average consumer and opening an online store tohelp reach them. HP printers were everywhere.

Now, HP printers lead the country in reliable printingsupplies and devices. Many different models are available

making them suitable for home, small business andcorporate use. It is pretty easy to find a household with anHP computer, printer, digital camera and other devices.People tend to stick with one brand and Hofferseverything a person might need for their office.

Reinventing Hewlett Packard with Mark Hurd.

Abstract:

Hewlett Packards new CEO and president, MarkHurd took charge in April 2005, replacing the oustedCarleton Fiorina. With Hurd HP was looking for a solid,staid personality who would take the company forward by

bringing back lost market share in products and services

and drive the various business units to realize theirhigh potential. The mandate given to Hurd by the

board was to steer the sprawling computer andprinter company into a more profitable and high-

growth road. Industry watchers wondered if Hurdsstrategies could overcome the fallout of the $24

billion Compaq merger and help restructure HP tosubstantially improve bottom lines.
