How to Upgrade Windows 10 with BCM Patch Management

The aim of this page is to explain how it is possible to upgrade the Windows 10 versions by using the BCM Patch Management feature.

As the Windows 10 versions are important upgrades, no link exists to download the patch, because it is an ISO file to download. So, Shavlik cannot supply the URL to download ISO automatically. So the user must do this step manually and supply the ISO to the Patch Manager.

Microsoft supplies a tool to download the ISO files.

Step 1: Windows 10 ISO file

Download the ISO that you need by using the Microsoft tool MediaCreationTool.exe available from this URL http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209 (or by downloading the ISO file directly from the MSDN web site if you have an account). If you download the ISO file from MSDN, the Multiple Edition ISO files work too.

If the MediaCreationTool.exe is used, follow these steps to download the ISO file

a. Launch the tool then select "Create installation media for another PC":

d. Save the windows.iso file then rename it correctly according the Shavlik's recommandation (PatchKey). The PatchKey information can be found in the PatchLanguages table in the database (see the PatchKey column when a patch is downloaded).

Example: for the following example, a Windows 10 64 bit Professional American version 1511 is installed, the windows.iso version 1607 has been downloaded then renamed Windows10x64Professional1607.iso If the language is American, no need to add the language name to the ISO filename. If it is another language than American, its name must be added at the end of the filename just before the underscore character, like in these examples:

Windows10x64Professional1607_FRA.iso (for the French language)

Windows10x64Professional1607_GER.iso (for the German language)

Windows10x64Professional1607_ENU.iso (for the English language)

Windows10x64Professional1607_JPN.iso (for the Japanese language)

Step 2: Localize the Windows 10 upgrade in BCM

A Windows 10 Upgrade is stored as a Service Pack in the Patch Management feature.

Select the Patch Manager and go on the node Service Packs by Product then select Windows 10

Step 3: Prepare the Windows 10 Service Pack in BCM

a. From the BCM Console, configure the Patch Manager to check on a local repository if the file exists:

b. Put the ISO files in this folder

Step 4: Patch Group to deploy the Windows 10 Service Packs

a. Create a Patch Group, and configure it by choosing Service Pack Only then select the Windows 10 version 1607 Service Pack:

7

d. It is important to uncheck the option "Only Reboot if Requested by Patch", because the device must reboot after the first installation step of the upgrade in order to continue the other steps of the installation after the first reboot.

Step 5: Verification

a. The Service Pack will be installed on the device, it is possible to follow the progression from the Patch Group like a normal Service Pack to install:

b. When the Service Pack is installed on the device, check the Installed Service Packs in the Patch inventory of the device:
