How to Transform your Presentations into Stories
ISGlobal Training 2013-2014
Before you start…
think about them!
Adapt your presentation to your AUDIENCE.It’s not the same to talk to a group of college kids as it is to a committee of experts.

(terror)
Once you have defined your target audience…
…structure your talk

…then all you’ll have to do is join the dots…
…to weave your storySource: web.viu.ca/ba/bearaware/activities_content.html
Because the structure of a presentation
1. Opening
2. Plot
3. Ending
…is similar to that of a story:

The hook
Gotcha!
…is an opening idea designed to surprise and engage your audience from the outset.

The hook
“Somewhere in la Mancha, in a place
whose name I do not care to
remember,…”
is the equivalent of the
opening sentence of a story or a novel
“Call me Ishmael”
“As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect-like creature”
“I’m an invisible man”
“I ask children to forgive me for dedicating this book to a grown-up”
a sentence…

A good hook can be…
Tutankhamen

Caravaggio
Oliver Cromwell
What do these people have in common?
a puzzle…

a personal story…

or an object …combined with a personal story
(among others)
Once you’ve got their attention…it’s time to build your PLOT:

As in a story, all your words should follow the same path.
Structure your ideas carefully.
Don’t jump back and forth.
Your slides
should be simple and legible.
Use big letters that can be seen from the back of the room.
Don’t go overboard on colors and effects.

Avoid information overload.
Don’t use long paragraphs.

(or this is what they will see)
Remember the 3-second rule:
Your audience should be able to assimilate everything on your slide in 3 seconds.

You don’t have to include everything.
Your slides are not your notes.

Don’t read.
Or a (teleprompter).
Prepare a document with all your information
to give out after the presentation.

You
And remember…

Speak loudly and clearly.
Use images
that cause an (emotional) impact
Your audience will associate these images with your words.
And keep an ace up your sleeve
«Wow them in the end, and you got a hit. You can have flaws, problems, but wow them in the end, and you've got a hit.»
for the ending
Adaptation.
And just a couple of more things:
You never know how you are going to say something until you actually say it.
Practise! You should be so familiar with your presentation that you can give it without notes.
