Tell Your Story!

As you build a track of accomplishments and increase your
confidence, learn to tell your story.
The Art of Telling Your Story
• When you have an exciting result, tell others about your accomplishment – Your enthusiasm will be genuine.
• When you give a presentation about your work, present the facts, but also let others know how you accomplished the results.
• An interesting reference: Peggy Klaus, Brag!: The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn without Blowing It

Ask for What You Want
Now that you have defined your career aspirations and potential opportunities to
advance your plan, you need to ask for what you want!
21
Others cannot read your mind, so be ready to share your career plan with your supervisor
and solicit feedback
Be Ready To Act
• You own this plan and it works both ways Sometimes opportunities come your way,
sometimes you need to look for and create the opportunity
• Be realistic – It might take some time
• It might take you into a different department and/or organization

• Identify those who can provide advice and perspective in areas that may be outside your expertise – Your own ‘Board of Directors’
Who do you look up to that would be a good fit for you?
Think about your career plan – Who can help?
Is there a gap and do you need to build new relationships?
