Some patients recover without treatment, while some patients become asymptomatic carriers. Neisseria gonorrhoeae can enter the body through the urethra and cause systemic symptoms that result in seminal vesiculitis, prostatitis (prostate), and even urethral stricture or infertility. Approximately 20% of women with gonorrhea develop a uterine infection that can lead to endometritis, inflammation of the fallopian tubes or pelvic inflammatory disease which can result in later ectopic pregnancy or infertility. Furthermore, for pregnant women with gonorrhea, their newborn may develop gonococcal conjunctivitis by contact with the eyes during delivery. This can result in blindness if not properly treated. In addition to the presented symptoms, the physicians can also use Gram stain, culture or polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based testing methods to determine a diagnosis. Antibiotics are used to effectively treat gonorrhea infections. Individuals with suspected infection can seek medical attention at outpatient centers with family medicine, infectious disease, obstetrics and gynecology or urology specialists. Please note, gonorrhea can still be transmitted during the treatment period. It is recommended that the patient remain sexually abstinent during this time. 1. Avoid having multiple sex partners. 2. Use a condom correctly throughout sexual contact. When using lubricants, choose water-based lubricants. Do not use oil-based lubricants (e.g., baby oil or Vaseline) as they may cause breakage of the condom. 3. If you think you might have gonorrhea, do not purchase drugs from the pharmacy or believe in home remedies. Please seek medical attention, and get proper diagnosis and treatment early. 4. In order to eliminate a source of infection, visit a medical facility with your sexual partner for sexually transmitted diseases related education, consultation, examination, and treatment. 5. Clinical manifestation and other complications Clinical manifestation and other complications
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It affects people of all ethnicities, genders, and ages, and is the most prevalent among young population. Gonorrhea is spread through: (1) sexual contact (oral, anal, and vaginal sex). (2) Wound coming into contact with an infected person’s semen, blood, vaginal fluids or other secretion of the mucous membranes.(3) Newborn infected and develops conjunctivitis from passage through the birth canal.
Men and women experience different symptoms. In men, symptoms appear between two and seven days after infection. Symptoms may include: purulent urethral discharge, pain or a burning sensation during urination. Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection of the anus is typically asymptomatic. Some may experience colon infection with itching and anal
discharge. Infected women may experience urinary tract infection, cystitis or cervicitis. Symptoms include frequent urination, pain during urination, abnormal smell or increased vaginal discharge, and abdominal pain. Symptoms are generally mild and barely noticeable, which are often ignored.
