How to Prepare a Study Guide
This training program is a collaborative project of the Arts Council of Hillsborough County, Katie Adams’ Make Believe Theatre and VSA – Florida and is sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture.
» CPALMS is an online database and is the State of Florida’s official source for standards information and course descriptions.
» CPALMS provides access to thousands of standards-aligned, free, and high-quality instructional/educational resources that have been developed specifically for the standards and vetted through a rigorous review process.
There are several different ways to access the Standards. You can access the Standards by:
Grade level (See grade level buttons)
Dropdown menu marked “Standards”
Via the Course descriptions using the dropdown menu marked “Course”.
As you can see, the Standards are organized by subject. Scroll down the page to review all subjects. You should always start by identifying Standards that directly relate to your primary art form.
Subject Areas
When you access a subject area, the Standards are then organized by applicable grade level. Most are organized by individual grades but some will group 6-8, 9-12 as well as broader K-12 for areas such as Gifted. Select a grade level.
Grade Levels
The next level of organization encompasses the overall or broad view of the learning goals. Within the Arts Standards (Dance, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts) this is referred to as the “Big Idea”. Other subject areas use different terminology (please see Terminology chart after organizational definitions.)
Broad View of Learning Goals
The overall learning goal is then broken down into more focused goals that are still fairly broad. Within the Art Standards these are referred to as “Enduring Understandings”. Other subject areas use different terminology (please see Terminology chart after organizational definitions.)

Next, the focused goal or Enduring Understanding is broken down into specific Benchmarks. The benchmarks guide instruction and assessment.

This will take you to the “Toolkit” for the grade level selected. The information is organized once again by subject area. The Standards for each subject area are available as well as other resources and tools like sample lesson plans, student activities, etc. Not all subject areas will have all the resources. Select the Dance Standards
The 33 benchmarks/standards that are applicable for this grade level are displayed. At this point, you would look at the benchmarks and select one or two that are applicable to your performance or workshop. Select the “More Information” link for the first benchmark.
This will give detailed description as well as broad view and focused view. It also provides direct access to related courses and their descriptions. Let’s look at the related course.
The initial view displays related course number(s). You can select the number to see the detailed course description.
The course description gives detail of skills learned throughout the course as well as the course length, keywords and grade levels. It also gives all related course standards and related resources. Let’s look at the course standards.
This is most helpful. It gives all standards related to this course, regardless of subject area. Further information on each standard is available by selecting the standard.
Let’s take a look at reviewing the Standards via the Course Deszcriptions.
Access via Course Description menu
This divides the courses into elementary, middle and high school/adult. Select Grades PreK to 5 Education Courses.
The courses are now broken down by subject area. It is recommended that you start with your primary art form at this point. Let’s take a look at Drama-Theatre Arts.
The PreK to 5 Education Courses are all general in nature. If we were exploring secondary course work, the subject area would be further categorized. Select General.
This gives the Courses available. Please note – they are divided by grade level as well as difficulty. Select the first course.
