How to install Dragon Speech Medical

on VMware App Volumes This white paper will guide you how to install Dragon Medical Speech on a VMware

App Volume.

The App Volume will be connected to a VMware Horizon View Random Desktop

Pool.

The Microphone that will be connected is a Philips Speech Mike III.

In our setup we implemented a mandatory user profile which improved logon times

significantly. When a user logs off from his VMware Horizon View session, the VM is

reset and his user profile and application settings are not saved. We saved the users

Dragon Medical Speech profile and other settings with the Appsense Desktop Now

suite. When the users connects to a new VM, his Dragon Medical Speech profile and

other user settings are available as on a client PC.

1.1 Install Dragon Speech Medical on a

VMware App volume 1. Create a new VMware App Volume in App Volumes manager.


2. After the creation of the App Volume, it’s ready to install the software.

3. Select Provision and connect it to your provisioning VM. This has to be an

exact clone of your Master VM.

4. Connect to your provision VM and after logon you will see the message box

below:

Do not close this message box until you have finished installing the software.

5. Start the installation of the software as you would on a physical client PC.


App Volumes intelligently records the entire application installation process,

and it makes the changes made by the Dragon Medical Speech installer

available for delivery to users.

6. After the installation of Dragon Speech Medical select OK in the message box.

7. The VM will now reboot, press OK again.

8. After the reboot, connect to the provision VM to complete the process.

Press OK, and shutdown the VM.

9. Logon to the App Volumes Manager console.

The App Volume Dragon_Speech_Medical is now ready to distribute to users.


10. Select the App Volume and press Assign.

You can search Active Directory and assign a security group. When the

members logon to a View session the volume will be mounted as part of the

logon process. After logon, Dragon Speech Medical is available for the user.

1.2 VMware View USB configuration If we use the native VMware View USB – redirection, the Philips Speech Mike III will

not be available from the Connect USB Device drop down menu.

We have to include the Pid and Vid device ID of the Philips Speech Mike III. The table

below contains a list of the different Philips Speech Mikes devices with their Pid and

Vid device ID’s.

1. Logon to your Domain Controller, assign a group policy to the Organizational

Unit which contains your virtual desktops, open this policy and add the

administrative template „vdm_agent.adm” to it. For more information on how

to use VMware View templates in Active Directory see

VMware.View.Administration.doc.

2. On your Domain Controller open the group policy, go to ... / Vmware View

Agent Configuration / View USB Configuration and double click Include

Vid/Pid Device.

3. Select Enabled, enter the Split Vid/Pid Device ID o:vid-0911_pid-0c1c in the

field and click OK.

Philips Speech Mike Driver After applying the VMware view USB GPO and rebooting the virtual desktops. The

Philips Speech Mike will be available from the Connect USB Device drop down menu.

If you connect the device. Windows will automatically install the driver but the driver

requires a reboot. If you reboot the device it will be reset to its original state and all

changes made to the virtual desktop will be lost. You have to add the driver to the

Master Virtual Machine before you create your Random Desktop Pool.

You have to install the driver by connecting to the Master Virtual Machine directly

trough the VMware Horizon View Client. To be able to do this you have include the

View Agent Direct Connection Plugin in the Master Virtual Machine. More

information about the View Agent Direct Connection Plugin can be found here.

1. Connect the Phlips Speech Mike to your computer, Windows will install the

driver automatically and reboot your computer.

2. Connect to your Master Virtual Machine

3. Select the Philips Speech Mike from the Connect USB Device drop down

menu.

4. Windows will install the driver automatically and reboot the Master Virtual

Machine.


5. Reconnect to the Master Virtual Machine and select the Philips Speech Mike

from the Connect USB Device drop down menu. The Philips Speech Mike is

now connected to the Master Virtual Machine.

6. Disconnect the Philips Speech Mike and shutdown the Master Virtual

Machine.

7. Take a snapshot from the Master Virtual Machine. The Random Desktop Pool

will be created from this snapshot.

1.3 Create the Random Desktop Pool After adding the Philips Speech Mike to the Master Virtual Machine we can create the

Random Desktop Pool. The Desktop Pool is based on the previous created snapshot

of the Master Virtual Machine.

1. Connect to your VMware View Connection Server


2. Select Desktop Pools and Click add.

Select Automated Desktop Pool.

3. Select Floating Desktop Pool and Click Next.


4. Select View Composer linked Clones and Click Next.

5. Add an ID and a Display name for the Desktop Pool. Select the Access group

and Click Next.

6. Modify the Desktop Pool Settings according to your requirements and Click

Next.


7. Add a Naming Pattern and Click Next.

8. Modify the Disposable File Redirection to your requirements.

9. Modify Storage Policy Management according to your requirements and Click

Next.


10. Select your Master Virtual Machine, select the snapshot that contains the

Philips Speech Mike driver and adjust the other settings to your needs. Click

Next.


11. Modify the Advanced Storage Options to your requirements and Click Next.

12. Modify the Guest Customization settings to your needs and Click Next.


13. Select Entitle users after this wizard finished and Click Next.

14. Select the Active Directory Security Group that contains the users who will

connect to Random Desktop Pool.

1.4 Personalization with Appsense Desktop

Now Suite Our mandatory user profile and VMware App Volume are read only. When a user

logs of from the virtual machine its reset and all changes to the machine are lost. We

use Appsense Desktop Now Suite to personalize and secure the user’s desktop.

The Dragon Speech Medical user profile is saved on a file share. When a user’s log on

and configures his profile, in his next session he will not be able to select his user

profile when the application starts. We solved this using Appsense Environment

Manager.

We analyzed the application behavior, after configuring the user profile and

application settings. 4 Configuration files where modified in

C:\ProgramData\Nuance\NaturallySpeaking12


1. Connect to your Appsense server, open Environment Manager and load your

configuration

2. Select User\Logon\Desktop Created

3. Create a new node Dragon Speech Medical

4. We created a condition if a user is member of the security group that is

assigned to the Dragon Speech Medical App Volume the files are copied.

5. Save the configuration.

If a member of the security group logs on to a Virtual Desktop the files will be copied

when the desktop is available for the user. If the users start Dragon Medical Speech

he will be able to select his user profile.
