HOW TO HAVE A STRONG SAFETY CULTUREMaking sure that workers are safe on site is all about creating a strong

safety culture. The vast majority of accidents, injuries and fatalities are

caused, not by totally random events, but by human error. So it stands

to reason that encouraging safe behaviours and cautious attitudes can

go a long way in keeping workers well protected. Here are some tips for

boosting workplace safety.

1. BE VERY, VERY CLEAR ON WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR WHATOne surefire way to create worksite chaos is lack of clarity around roles

and responsibilities. Every single person in your organisation, at every

level, should be clear on what they're responsible for when it comes to

safety, and how to execute their duties.

2. COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATEBy constantly reminding your employees that safety is important to you, you'll not

only win their respect and admiration, you'll also help them to remember to take

precautions. Don't lapse into nagging, but do mention your ideas and hopes around

workplace safety at meetings.

3. ESTABLISH PROCESSESOnce roles and responsibilities are laid out, you then need to create

processes to make sure that people do their job. Set up processes that

hold individuals accountable and don't be afraid to administer discipline

if you have to.

4. KEEP UP-TO-DATE ON REPORTINGWhenever an incident occurs - even if it seems insignificant at the

time - it must be reported. Having detailed records goes a long way

in reducing accidents.

5. CONDUCT THOROUGH INVESTIGATIONSWhen something does go wrong, don't just brush it under the carpet. Find out

exactly why it went wrong and how. You can use this information to prevent

future incidents.

6. PRAISE POSITIVE ACTIONS Whenever things go well - whether an individual has taken praiseworthy action or

the workplace has been generally safe for an extended period - be sure to

announce it publicly. Positive reinforcement encourages better behaviour.
