Afterlongyears,Veraleftthe“safety”ofemploymentinadvertisingandtookherchancesonunexploredgroundsoffreelancing.Althoughsheconfessesthatshewasn’triskingthatmuchbygoingfreelancebecauseshehadcertainlivelihoodsecurities,itstillrequiredabigchunkofcouragetomakethedecidingstep.
Butwhenthestrongestattributeofadecisionhappenstobefreedom,yourstepsleadinguptothedefinedgoalarecertainlymoresurefooted.

Veragivestheimpressionthatherdecisionwasworthit.Hersurroundingistreatedtosmilesandgoodmoodwithouttheconstantstress.That’sbecausewhenshedoesn’tworkatclients’commissionedprojectsshehastimeforherownfromthe“endlesslist”.Ifaroutinesettinglikethisissupposedtorunsmoothly,oneneedstomakethequalitynamedDisciplineintoone’sfaithfulfriend.AndthatisjustwhatVeradid.
Justasadoctor,carpenter,oramechanic,Verahasvariousworktoolsatherdisposal.Thecornerstoneonesarepredominantlyherheadandherrighthand,whichsheusesforsketchingherideasanddraftstheoldschoolway–withpencilonpaper.Herconsideratenessresurfacesfromtimetotime,whensherealizeshowmanysketchedpaperssheneedstothrowawaybeforeshereachesthedesiredresult.Furthermore,eventheconstanterasing,whichisaninherentpartofsuch

Veralikesdigitaldrawingtoo,soshecombines.Sheperceivesitasacleanerandmorepracticalcounterparttotheclassicalone.“Icanalwaysundoanychangesand,ontopofthat,saveagreatamountofpaint,pencils,andpaper.”Eventhoughsheseesahugeaddedvalueinworkwithsoftwareandhardware,shealwayslikestocomebacktotheliteraldrawingboardandmanualworkingeneral.Itfeelsmorerealtoher.Theillustratordefinesitasanescapefromtheomnipresenttechnologythatsurroundsus.
Vera’sprofessionistocreateartworks,andforthosesheneedsinspiration.Shesourcesitfromallaroundherbut,almostmainly,fromwithinherself,viaherchildhoodexperiences.“Tothisday,IdrawmyinspirationfromtimeswheneverythingfeltjustrightandIprojectthesefeelingsintomyworks.”Apartfromherownlivedoutfeelings,she’sinspiredbymanypeople–especiallythosewhocreatesimilarartworksthemselves.Veraadmitsthatsomeofthemeveninfluencedtheverycoreofherartisticthinking.WithgreatadmirationshetalksaboutKarelZemanorbothSvěráks,fatherandson.Butwhohascaptivatedherabsolutely,withhisartisticcreations,wasTimBurton.InspirationflowstowardsVeraalsofromvariousgalleries,exhibitions,andfestivalsshevisitsfrequently.Shejustchoosescarefully.

asimmediatelyeye-catchingandemotionallyarousing.Whiledressingupnewcarsthedesignersadheretoafewrules.Darkshadescanmakethecar“feel”smallerinsomecases,inotherstheymightunderlinethecar’sluxuriousappearance.Lightershadescan,ontheotherhand,makeacarappearlargerormorestriking.Ifthedesignerchosesmetallicpaintitusuallytendstosupportthecar’sshape.Theshadechoiceisalsodeterminedbypsychologicalparametersanditsusagepurpose.Ifthevehicleinquestionisashowcar,destinedforpublicandmediapresentationatsomeoftheworld’smotorshows,whereitsprimarypurposeistoattractattention,thenthedesignerscanreachformoreaudaciouscolours.Insuchcases,theyarelimitedvirtuallyonlybytheirownimagination
andtheycanplaywiththecoloursinsuchwaysthatwouldattractattentionthemost.Concerningcarsdestinedforserialproduction,therecomesaprocesswhenthedesignersjoinforceswiththemarketingandproductiondepartmentandtheyhavetosortoutthetechnologicalsideofthings.Theresultofthiscooperationshouldbeapaletteofcoloursofferingsufficientchoicepossibilitiesand,atthesametime,maximallyunderliningthemodel’scharacter.Thecoloursvariants’goalistoapproachaswidespectrumofcustomersaspossible,andalsotosatisfyacertainindividualityineveryoneofthem.Lastbutnotleast,theshadechoiceisinfluencedbytrends,asinmanyotherindustries.Butregardingcars,thecoloursarenotthatsusceptibletofashionablefads,they’remoretimeless,becausethecarpurchasingprocesstakesyears,notafewmonthorseasonsasitisforinstancewithclothes.
ColouritselfismoretangibleforVerathan“matterssurrounding”thedaughtersofMnémosynéwho’sthemythologicalmotherofallMuses.Shefollowsthepathofinstantimpressionandassheherselfsays,sheproceedsfromthe“assignment

feeling”.Herinspirationdoesn’tstemfromcoloursatallandifthereisaneedtoapply“new”andunusualones,shetakesthemfromavailablesamplebooks.Althoughsheseemsslightlyreluctanttopointinthedirectionofherfavouritecolour,sheadmitsthatshelikestoworkwithshadesofgreybecausetheyaregreattocombine.Theillustratorissatisfiedwithusingtone-on-tonecolourscalesandshereachesforgreatercontrastsfromtimetotime,butthatdependsontheindividualprojectandhercurrentmood.
Whenshetalksaboutcoloursshevisitsthelandscapeofherchildhoodonceagain,becauseitnoticeablybringsherfeelingsofwarmthandsafety.Vera’ssenseforcolourharmonisationisapparentallaroundheratelierinteriorwherewepaidherthevisit.Everythingmatchesindeepdetailandverylighttones,theoverallatmosphereisundisturbed.
Theonlythingthatseemstostickoutofthewholespaceandwhatconstantlyattractsourattentionisalittleredcar,peekinggleefullyfromVera’sswitchedoncomputerscreen.“It’sReindeerRed,”shesaysinresponsetoourinquisitivestarestargetedontothescreen.“AndthecolourisonepartoftheemotionsI’veusedforthelittleredcarillustrationsforŠKODAAUTOChristmasstory.”
Theauthoranimatedlydescribeshowandwhyshe’schosenthiscolour:“It’snotyourregularred,thisoneisbrightandwarmandcomesrightfromtheRudolphreindeercharacter;fromhisheartandhisgoodness,”shedescribeswithasmileonherfaceandatthesametimeshemakesusfamiliarwiththewholecreativeprocessoftheChristmasspotillustration.Whileshecontinuestounveilallcreativestepsneededformakingofthisfriendlycarcharacter(andotherprotagonists)shementionsthebiggestchallengesanddifficultiesofthisproject,andatthesametimesheunintentionallyrevealstheextentofherknowledgenotonlyaboutcolours,butalsothecarindustryitself.
