Thank you for your consideration to join and participate virtually at the 75th Rural Sociological Society annual meeting in Chicago. This is a guide on how to create and record a self-running presentation in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010. This also serves as an example of such a presentation.

1Things to consider when recording a slide showPronounce each word clearly.

Ensure that the environment around you is relatively quiet with minimal background noise

Check the recording and sound quality prior to recordingE: [email protected]: 801 -422 - 7386W: www.ruralsociology.org

Before you plan to create a self running presentation there are a few things to consider when recording a slide show:

Number one, pronounce each word clearly. For example, Rural Sociological Society can sound slurred if spoken too fast. Number two, If you are close to a window and depending on the recording device, background noise can be picked up and interrupt the narration.Number three, check the recording and sound quality prior to starting the show to ensure that the narration is clear. 2Step 1: Create your PowerPoint Presentation SlidesE: [email protected]: 801 -422 - 7386W: www.ruralsociology.org

Now you are ready to create your slide show. Step 1, plan and create your slides for the presentation. Create your slide show in PowerPoint. Remember, avoid adding animated sounds to the presentation as these will cancel out the narration.

3Step 2: Write your script for the presentationNote: A script is recommended to ensure that the speech is consistent and to avoid unnecessary pauses. E: [email protected]: 801 -422 - 7386W: www.ruralsociology.org

Step 2. After creating your slide show, write up a brief script which would be similar to the one that you would use when conducting your presentation. It is recommended to use a script as a guide for the narration to avoid unnecessary pauses and maintain speech consistency. 4Step 3: Set-up the self-running slide show

Download the How to set-up a self-running slide show guide from the Rural Sociological Society annual meeting website: www.ruralsociology.usE: [email protected]: 801 -422 - 7386W: www.ruralsociology.org

Step 3. To set up your slide show with narration properly, follow the guide on How to set-up a self-running slide show that can be downloaded from the RSS annual meeting website. 5Step 4: Record your slide show1. Ensure environment around you is quiet2. Ensure the recording quality from the microphone is good3. Ensure the play-back quality from the recording is goodRemember to Pause 1-2 seconds before and after each slide.E: [email protected]: 801 -422 - 7386W: www.ruralsociology.org

Step 4. Now you are ready to record your narration. Remember to check the following before starting the recording session:Number 1: Ensure the environment around you is relatively quietNumber 2: Ensure the recording quality from the microphone is goodNumber 3: Ensure the sound quality from the test recording is good. These three items can be done by doing a test run of a few slides.

Remember to pause 1-2 seconds before and after each slide to ensure a smooth transition between slides. Without this pause, the narration will sound as if audio was interrupted for a brief moment. 6Step 5: Save and Preview your RecordingVolume of the narration must be consistent and synced with slide transition.E: [email protected]: 801 -422 - 7386W: www.ruralsociology.org

Step 5. After you have finished recording your slide show, preview it for sound quality and slide transition before submitting it to RSS. If you are satisfied with the recording, save the file like you normally would do with a power point presentation.

An important note to remember, when you are previewing the slide show, is to ensure that the volume from the narration is consistent and synced with slide transitions. 7Step 6: Submit your self-running presentation to RSSRefer to the Rural Sociological Society annual meeting website at www.ruralsociology.us for instructions on how to upload your file.
