Don’t forget, the image is moved to the left, right or centre of the document by dragging.

3. Choosing the webcam lets pupils take photographs directly from the computer, and add them to their document.

Once a picture, painting or photograph has been added to a document, it can be resized by dragging one of the corner handles.

Add a caption to an image by right-clicking the picture and selecting Add Caption.

Click Run Now to open the Clicker Set.

The first screen of the Clicker Set contains an information button telling you about the grid, including ideas for how to use it with children and information about other sets available on

How to: personalize and save Clicker 6’s user preferences

It is easy to personalize and save Clicker 6’s user preferences for pupils to access easily from the Quick Start menu.

Go to the Options menu and click User Preferences.

Select the Document tab

• Choose if appropriate words are automatically capitalized and if incorrectly spelled words are underlined.

• Select the default font and font size, and what file type is used when documents are saved.

Select the Speech tab

Select the Media tab

Select the Clicker Sets tab

• Select the speech engine and the speed at which it reads. • Choose if, and how, the text is highlighted as it is read aloud. • Choose when the text is read aloud.

• Choose where instant pictures are used. • Select the size of instant pictures in the document. • Choose the libraries you wish Clicker 6 to search for pictures and

symbols in.

• Choose if Edit Mode will be available. • Select the preferred on-screen keyboard. • Choose if the keyboard opens automatically when Clicker 6 starts.

Don’t forget if a pupil has their own network login, their user preferences will follow them to whichever computer they log onto.

Select the Predictor tab

Select the Look and Feel tab

• Move the slider to choose a predictor level or select Custom Level to adapt the settings further.

• Select how words are sent from the predictor to the document. • Choose if SoundsLike prediction is used.

• Select which tools are shown in the document toolbar and the grid toolbar.

• Choose the size of the tools and tabs.

Once all of the settings have been chosen, save the user preferences by going to the Options menu, selecting Import and Export, and then Export User Options. You will be asked to name your user options.

Your user options will appear in this list on the Quick Start screen for pupils to access

easily.

How to: personalize the word predictor settings

Go to the Options menu and click User Preferences.

Customize the settings of the word predictor so that each pupil benefits from a personalized level of support.

Click the Predictor tab.

Move the slider to use one of the pre-

set levels or click Custom Level to create your own

(see below).

Clicking Custom Level allows you to make the following choices.

Select how many words to list in the

predictor.

Choose the font settings.

Select the size of database that the words

predict the next word.

Select Picture Bank from the New Clicker Set screen.

Click Add Pictures to open the picture browser.

Navigate to a folder of pictures on your desktop or network, or use images from the new Crick Picture Library 3.

Click Insert to add the pictures, and then Close

They can also paint pictures to add their own items to each category.

Now I Am Older – Write a Book Pupils create their own book about what they can

do now that they are older. On each page, they write a sentence about what they can do and paint

a picture to illustrate it.

Read about Sam An on-screen book about a boy called Sam, which gives simple information about Sam’s life such as his age, family and pets. On each page they can

listen to the text and then record the information themselves.

Sam Sentences A sentence building activity about a boy called

Sam. There are three levels of activity so that pupils can write the sentences with the appropriate

support.

The Body – Picture Match A picture matching activity based on parts of the

body. Each page shows a target picture and then a choice of three other pictures, from which to select a match. Pupils can only make the correct matches.

The Head – Read and find A word to picture matching set based on parts of

the head. Each page shows a target word and then a choice of ten pictures, from which to select a

match. Pupils can only make the correct matches.

What I Do – Writing An activity where pupils write about the activities

they might do within the context of everyday situations. They can write about things they do at

home, at school, at the park, at the shopping centre and at the beach.

Registering your own media libraries enables your images to instantly appear in documents and Clicker Sets.

Give your library a name and click Next.

Clicker Browse and navigate to the folder of images on your

computer or network and click Next.

Don’t forget to name your photographs appropriately for Clicker to find them.

Use the default identifier if you wish and click Next.

Select whether you want to embed media within Clicker Sets, and then

select whether to always use the library with instant pictures.

Click Create.

Your media library will appear in the list.

Photographs in your registered media library will appear when you use Clicker’s instant pictures feature.

How to: show instant pictures in a document

Go to the Options menu and click User Preferences.

Why not register your own digital pictures to use in your documents?

Clicker’s instant pictures feature enables images to automatically appear when words are typed into the document.

How to: add topic words to the word predictor

First, use the Quick Grid Word Bank Wizard to create a topic word bank.

It is easy to include topic specific vocabulary in the word predictor to support pupils’ writing across the whole curriculum.

Type or paste your text into the box.

Select alphabetic tabs or have all of the words on one grid.

Choose the number of common English words to leave out of the word bank.

Once the word bank is made check the word predictor’s settings by going to the Options menu and clicking User Preferences.

People at Work – Questions This is a comprehension activity where pupils

answer questions about different jobs. They choose a picture in response to each question and then

write the answers.

People at Work – Write a Book In this activity, pupils create their own book about

people at work. Each page offers support in writing about a different worker, with a focus on where

they work and what their job involves.

Pronouns – Workers In this activity, pupils use third person singular

pronouns to complete sentences about a range of people at work. Each page displays a sentence about a named worker. The pupil chooses the correct pronoun (He or She) for the start of a

Talk about Workers This is an open-ended speaking activity where

pupils record information about different jobs. It is an ideal group activity which can also be

completed by individuals. Pupils can use the set to present to the class.

Workers Sentences This is a sentence building set about the jobs that

some people do. It focuses on compound sentences containing the conjunction “and”. Within

the set there are three levels of activity so that pupils can write the sentences with the appropriate

amount of support.

Write about Jobs In this activity, pupils write about different jobs, considering the skills and qualities required for

each one. They write about what each job would enable them to do and whether or not they would

enjoy it, giving their reasons why (or why not).

How to: open, change and personalize the on-screen keyboard

Go to the View menu and click Show Keyboard.

Clicker has an integrated on-screen keyboard, enabling pupils to type directly from a touch screen or interactive whiteboard.

Access the accented characters for typing in other languages.

Close the keyboard.

Access capital letters and alternative symbols.

Minimize the keyboard.

frog. The book looks at how a frog develops, describing the changes that happen at each stage of the life cycle – from the start of life in the egg,

If you have chosen to provide words in a pop-up, the following screen will appear.

Once your settings are chosen, click Next.

Type or paste the words for the pop-up.

Tip: to include more than one word in a

cell put [square brackets] around the

words.
