THE ‘WHY’Most adults will want to learn if they are aware of why it is important for

them to learn a particular skill/topic.

When faced with an individual who is resisting learning a skill during the

training session, communicate how the learning will translate into tangible

benefits for him/her, ex. Will it make their job easier?

TO THE POINTThis principle emphasises the importance of “Sticking to the point”. Adults

come into a training session with a clear idea of what they need to learn, so

leave out the nice-toknow skills and knowledge

LEARN BY DOINGAdults are not particularly disposed towards lectures and long-winded, boring

instructions. They should have ample opportunities to actively participate in

the learning process.

It is important for them to be able to APPLY the newly acquired skills as this

provides a far more stimulating learning experience and supports retention of

the skills acquired

It is therefore important that case examples are relevant to the environment

they work in so ensure that the cases used to skill practise reflect their real

work environment.

Seat the group in a way that all the partecipants can participate and interact

During the facilitation use humour and informal discussion to help break the

formal educational stigma of the traditional classroom

ADULTS LEARN BESTTHROUGH A VARIETY OF

TRAINING METHODSStatistics show that a combination of learning methods results in a higher

level of learning than when a single approach is used. For example, not all

adults are auditory learners and wold be far more stimulated by audio-visual

learning aids.

Many adults learn best by hands-on participation and active discussion so

make sure the training session allows time for such activities

Feeling

Pictures – scenes – images – diagrams – graphs – charts – photos – drawing

Words – music – sounds - conversations

Emotions – smells – tastes – tactile experiments – pain/comfort




Multi-Channel Messages

People can store information in the left and the right brain in the form of

picture (V), words (H) and/or sensations and feelings (F), we must give multi-

channel messages

In a classroom experiment tested after 24 hours,

partecipants recall of

V message: 80% correct answers

F message: 79% correct answers

H message: 45% correct answers




Stimulating the left and right brain

Professional trainers encourage learners to use both sides of the brain.

Example: Newton understood the theory of gravity while day-dreaming

Application: Trainers should combine analytical exercises with creative, expressive acvities
