What is 1/3 plus ½? Let’s try it with pizza.

WalkthroughWalkthrough

Let’s go through that with the actual numbers now that you understand what to do with pizza. First, make the denominators the same. The only way to add and subtract fractions is to have the same denominator for both fractions.

1/3 = 2/6

(1x2=2, 3x2=6)

½=3/6

(1x3=3, 2x3=6)

Walkthrough 2Walkthrough 2

Then, add the NUMERATORS and NOT the DENOMINATORS. This is because the denominators are how many pieces the whole is split into, and you aren’t splitting it up more.

2/6 + 3/6 =5/6

Subtracting FractionsSubtracting Fractions

It’s the same with subtraction with fractions. Make the fractions have the same denominator and then subtract the numerators and keep the denominator.

½ - 1/3 =?½ = 3/6, 1/3=2/6

3-2=1, so the answer is 1/6

Do you understand now? Good. Try this question.

3/5 – 1/2

AnswerAnswer

If you got 1/10, great job! If you got something different, here is how I got that.

3/5 = 6/10 ½= 5/10(3x2=6,5x2=10) (1x5=5, 2x5=10)

6-5=1, so the answer is 1/10
