The construction of Cabot Circus

• Cabot Circus has won many architectural awards and has transformed Bristol’s city centre…but for the better or worse?

• A lot of people believe that Cabot Circus’ renovation was for the best, it has created a high quality, friendly centre for people to visit and enjoy. But they are disadvantages to the changes too for example its expensive to use the car park and it gets very busy.

Advantages

• The construction of Cabot Circus has made Bristol city centre a nicer more modern place to visit and has improved the shopping experience for people of all ages.

• For example teenagers have a better places to meet with their friends and socialise. Younger children may find it a brighter more friendly place to be.

• There are a variety of high quality, well-known places to eat which are good for couples.

• If you don’t drive or can’t afford the car park fee, there is a bus drop off point very close so that you can easily walk to the shops. There is also a train station in Temple Meads which makes it very easy for people who live further away to get into the centre.

• More shops were built which means more jobs for people.

Disadvantages

• Some people believe that the renovation of Cabot Circus was a mistake. Different groups of people believe different things for example:

• Commuters may find it harder to travel through Bristol if more people are creating a lot to traffic when travelling to Cabot Circus. Residents near by will also be effected by the amount of traffic as it produces noise and air pollution.

• Changing the centre has made it much more popular to everyone from people that live in Bristol to people that travel miles to experience all it has to offer. This means that Cabot Circus can become packed with people, especially at weekends, people have to queue longer in shops and the car park gets filled. This effects everyone of all ages from teenagers to families.

• The car park is very expensive per hour so this may put people off as well.

• Elderly people may not enjoy visiting Cabot Circus because it is now much bigger so they may find it intimidating difficult to find their way around.

The redevelopment of Dharavi

• Dharavi is one of the largest slums in the world. Nineteen consortiums from around the world are vying to redevelop the 500-plus acres of land. Redeveloping Dharavi is Mukesh Mehta idea. He’s an Indian architect whose plan is to use private money to redevelop the slum and turn Mumbai into an international business destination.

“If effectively designed and well planned Dharavi could be not very different from London's Canary Wharf.” he told CNN.

• The plan is for developers to demolish the slum and build apartments on the site, which will be given free of charge to 57,000 families currently living in Dharavi. But for every 100 square feet of apartment space the developers give away, they will get to build 133 square feet of commercial space.

The redevelopment of Dharavi

• Dharavi has a very accessible location. In the heart of Mumbai, Dharavi is connected by all three of the city’s railway lines also the two highways that link Mumbai to the rest of India both start nearby.

• The developers stand to make huge profits and Dharavi's residents will get real homes with running water. But the scheme has taken 12 years to get off the ground.
