PART ONE: Two Truths and One Lie/
Trading Cards
Trading Card Assignment
Trading cards are fun collectibles that give information about a subject (often an
athlete). An image is usually found on the front of the card showing the subject in action with his or her name and some identifying information (often a team and position). For this assignment you will create a trading card to represent yourself. To do this you will have to decide how you would like to identify yourself and how best to illustrate this. Follow these steps:
1. On the front of the cue card I’ve given you, create (print or draw) a basic image of yourself doing one of the things that makes you who you are (playing a sport or instrument for example).
2. Clearly write your name and a few words (5 or less) describing who you are. I know it’s tough but really try!
3. On the back of your card, write your name on the top and add “statistics” below. Your statistics might actually not be statistics at all but may be a list of your skills, qualities, accomplishments, or any other identifying information.
4. Add some brief autobiographical information (a short paragraph about your life that tells us some more about who you are).

PART ONE: Quick Write Imagine a friendly alien greeted you one day and had no idea who you were. What would you tell him or
her? How would you explain who you are? What is important to know about you? What matters most to
you? What makes you who you are?
Complete a quick write on the sub-question, How would I describe myself? Use the questions above to
guide you.
A quick write can be in full sentence or point form. The purpose of this activity is to open the door to
thoughts and ideas while not stopping to worry about form or structure. You can make reference to your
past experiences or our discussion so far.

PART ONE: Ten Moments That Made Me
Many, often most, of the factors that make up your identity are rooted in things that you have
done or which have happened to you. Place ten events in the organizer below. These events should be
happenings that brought about growth or change in some way (influencing your identity). Some will be
happy (for example the start of a great friendship). Some will be sad (a family problem such as divorce
for instance).

PART TWO: Paragraph Information/
Topic Sentences Paragraphs
Paragraphs are a unit of writing expressing an idea or addressing an issue. Paragraphs are made
up of smaller units (sentences) that express or describe individual thoughts or actions. Usually, the first
line of a paragraph is indented.
Topic Sentences
Of the sentences that make up a paragraph, the topic sentence is by far the most important.
Usually this sentence is found at the beginning of a paragraph. The topic sentence guides and prepares
the reader.
A good formula for writing effective topic sentences in this case is:
Event + Change
Example- Getting cut from my high school basketball team made me perseverant.
The sentences that make up the body of a paragraph should be all closely related to the topic
sentence. Sentences not related to the topic are unnecessary and should be cut from your paragraph.
After the thought, idea, or event has been expounded upon, your paragraph should have a sentence or
two which wrap-up that unit of thought and usher the reader to the next part of your writing.
Once you have a solid topic your paragraph is a breeze!

PART TWO: Editing Assignment /
Final Copy Assignment Editing Assignment
Using the Paragraph Editing Package, revise and edit your four paragraph drafts in a different colour
ink. Examine the rubric which will be used for evaluating this assignment (found in the Paragraph
Editing Package). Your Processfolio as well as your Paragraph Editing Package will be collected and
your four revised and edited paragraphs will be graded on the rubric found in the package.
FINAL COPY ASSIGNMENT
When your Processfolio is returned after your Editing has been graded, complete a final copy of your
four paragraphs. This Final Copy is to be typed and you are to print your work and attach it to the Final
Copy Assignment given to you in class.
PART THREE: The Road of Life
The Road of Life Assignment
In our last activities, we looked into your past to see how you changed and developed
over the course of your life. You will use this information as the basis of a Road of Life Assignment. You will be sharing with us your key life experiences and illustrating how they helped shape you into the person you are today.
Your Road of Life will consist of:
Ten identifications (stops) of moments that influenced who you are today. Four paragraphs (each explaining one of these moments and the way it changed you). A visual that incorporates your ten stops/ four paragraphs as well as images which add
impact and depth to your Road of Life.
A presentation wherein you take us quickly through the times in your life that have most shaped your identity.
Good luck and have fun!
12
PART THREE: The Visual/
The Presentation
Your Road of Life assignment includes a visual component to help guide your presentation. The
visual can take any form as long as the criteria outlined in the rubric are respected. Although poster-
board remains the most popular format, past students have made websites, movies, and booklets to
express how their pasts influenced their identities.
The purpose of your visual is to add depth and impact to support your Road of Life paragraphs
and presentation. To do this your visual must have several things:
o A title and your name
o Ten moments that influenced your identity, simply named and dated (i.e. “Parents’ Divorce-
1994”)
o Your autobiographical paragraphs explaining four of these ten moments
o Images (drawings, photos, or other art) that connect to, and support, your Road of Life
Some students choose to also arrange their visual according to an idea or concept. This illustrates
high-level thinking and is recognized in the rubric. Some past concepts have been a Snakes-and-Ladders
inspired visual, a roller-coaster road of life, using artifacts as images, and a representation of a body with
the defining moments connected to a body part (i.e. falling in love connecting to the heart). You are
encouraged to be creative and expressive!
VISUAL PLANNING ORGANIZER
The Presentation
Every student is required to present his or her Road of Life. This is a casual and informal presentation.
Please do not read to us throughout or present only to the teacher. You are simply walking us through
your life and project. The main goal of the presentation is that we get to know you better.
- It is important to plan and practice your presentation to put yourself at ease and ensure your
presentation makes sense.
- You may choose not to discuss some of the stops on your road if you are not comfortable sharing.
- You may choose to pass on questions asked after your presentation if you are not comfortable
answering them.
- You may present from your seat or pre-record your presentation (narration of a video perhaps).
I have never had a student regret sharing. I hope you will see why as our group presents!

PART FOUR: Presenting/ Feedback/ Reflection
As your classmates present their work, jot down some ideas from what they share. These notes
may be questions you would like to ask the presenter, connections between your life and his/her own, or
anything relevant that his/her presentation brings to mind.
This organizer will contribute to your evaluation for Competency 1- Uses Language to
Communicate and Learn. Your notes will be evidence of your listening and obtaining new information.
