Mayo’s Core Value
The needs of the patient come first

Sustainability – Green Committee
• Green Committee is chartered in 2009 in Rochester
• Local grass roots group in Arizona begins and is then officially chartered in 2010.
• Scorecard project is started by Dr. Henry Tazelaar in 2011 who is the Physician chair of the Arizona Green Committee.
• Scorecard project brings communication across regional site working on the same goal.

First Steps
• Assign an energy
manager.
• Trend your energy
usage.
• If using utility bills
look at bill days
• I look at daily
averages when
comparing months.
©2011 MFMER | slide-13
Energy Management
• BTU/ft2/yr - A British Thermal Unit (BTU) is
a standard metric of energy consumption. In
order to compare relative energy use by site
(where energy consumption is in direct
correlation to campus size), the total BTU
consumption is normalized by ft2/yr. This
allows us to compare the ‘energy intensity’
of each site.

Looking at the Data
• 38% to 43 % energy used comes from natural gas
• Heating water for domestic water or space heat
• Steam
• Humidification
• Sterilization
• Kitchen cooking

Change is the only Constant
©2011 MFMER | slide-17
Houston we have a problem
• New building with no commissioning.
• Construction of existing building spaces.
• When do you add square footage
• Spending energy to cool air and then reheat it.
• Over ventilation when not required.
• Controls contractor not scheduling setback
©2011 MFMER | slide-18
Low Hanging Fruit and Improvements
• Commissioning and Retro commissioning.
• Hired a controls programmer in house
• Upgraded chillers with variable frequency drives’s (VFD)
• Replaced central plant controls
• Repaired steam traps
• Replaced lighting to Led when cost effective. • Can lights, spot lights, and under cabinet lights
