HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN

PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?By Rory Harrison

WHAT ROLE DOES EACH PRODUCT HAVE IN THE INDUSTRY?

Poster:Posters are created by the distributing company being Open Road Films. Posters are used as a marketing technique alongside the trailer. This use of promotion is used very often because of its versatility of location, and the fact they are able to grab attention very easily. Open Road films would be in symbiotic partnership with the Cinema so that not only could the poster be viewed in the cinema, but also the trailer and of course the film. Cinemas have a variety of different of ways to advertise films, this could be placed on the numerous products they provide. ( food- drink- leaflets etc).

Trailer:Likewise, the trailer is another marketing technique used by the distribution company: Open Road Films. However, trailers are a lot more popular not only in the creation of the promotion, but also in the view count it gets compared to other forms of promotion. This is because trailers portray many more themes and narrative in the film than any other form of promotion. It gives away different scenes and because of this audiences involve themselves more in the trailer. Once again, Open Road would have a symbiotic relationship with the cinemas so that the trailer would be view before other films. We were originally going to use a more Niche cinema such as Picture House but as we touch on genres such as action, we thought it was more appropriate to have this relationship with more mass cinemas such as Cineworld.

Magazine:Magazines are a media text not produced by the distributing company however produced by the magazine owner, and in this case- The BFI. The BFI have a very intellectual audience who are keen film fans. So we chose this niche magazine as it fits our film well- as neo noir has a very niche audience.

NARRATIVE

Firstly, there is a clear link between the poster and the trailer as we see the themes of crime and violence. We see a gun in the bottom right hand side of the poster- held by the male protagonist Ross. We then can link this to many gun appearances in the trailer. The most key appearance of a gun is by the femme fatale. She is shown holding a gun and pointing it at the camera towards the end of the trailer. This goes against the convention of males with the guns, and converts it to the femme fatale, this could lead onto the theme of deception.

NARRATIVE

Another link of which we can make with the trailer and the poster is this theme of family. We see Ross and his son James both featuring in the bottom corners of the poster. The way James is staring at Ross gives us the sense he may be a reason that gets in the way of Ross’ job. We then link this theme over into the trailer when at the start we see a family equilibrium and all is good. Ross is spending a lot of time with James and they have a clear bond. We then see the break in equilibrium between these characters however the family theme does carry on as we see Ross look at his phone with a picture of James. This shows how the theme is throughout and could be a reason which is delaying Ross job.

NARRATIVEWe once again see the strongest link which is the use of the genres conventions. Both the magazine and the poster show clear connections through the use of the colour scheme. Both are black and white, which are two colours used in noir as they show the contrast between what's good and bad. We also have a link through the use of drugs and a cigarette. In both the magazine and poster there is an obvious use of mise en scene to create a link between them all- the cigarette. On top of this, in the trailer, there are multiple shots of use of drugs. Finally, the use of low key lighting is one way we link them all together, as they are all low key and there is a contrast between light and dark- good and bad.

NARRATIVE

Another obvious link we can make is by using a femme fatale. The femme fatale is a strong convention of neo noir so we thought it was almost necessary to use in our texts. We see the femme fatale feature in the film poster above the other two characters. This could imply to use she is manipulating them and is in control of them. We then link this theme into our trailer as we see the femme fatale- smoking, and in this shot she refers to Ross as ‘he’ this could again suggest the power and control she has over him, even from the start. This leads us on to think maybe she is manipulating him in some way.We can instantly link the control of her in these two pieces of media text.
