My media product’s representations• My magazine develops and
conforms to the typical Asian stereotype of ‘The exotic other’. However I also challenge this stereotype as I ensured that my model did not have contacts that give a less westernised perspective.
• I wanted to conform to the stereotypical way of representing Asian women as a bejewelled sari wearer. My model was placed in traditional dress.
Representation of Women
• The dominant representations of women in the media are:
– Highly sexualised– Lips parted– Image conscious– Provocative poses– Feminine– Madonna and
whore binary oppositions.
•Here my model is represented as challenging the stereotypes of women being highly sexualised as she is dressed in modest clothing, she is not showing a lot
of skin and she does not have an excess of make-up on. She is However showing more skin than permitted in some Asian countries which gives it a
more relaxed, Western feel.
