THE WATER CYCLE

How does water move throughout

the Earth?

Three States of Water

So, What is Water Vapor? Water vapor is the gas form of H2O

We cannot see it, but it is all around us

4 Main Parts of the Water Cycle

Page 5: How does water move throughout the Earth?. Three States of Water.

Main Source of Energy

Without it, there would be no cycle

Page 6: How does water move throughout the Earth?. Three States of Water.

Uneven Heating of the Earth

The sun heats water and land differently, which causes convection currents (we will discuss more later)

These currents create movement in the atmosphere above Earth, which helps to keep the water cycle moving

Now let’s see the Water Cycle in action

Evaporation• Process of liquid water turning into water vapor• Water vapor rises up into the atmosphere from oceans, rivers, lakes, and puddles.

Page 9: How does water move throughout the Earth?. Three States of Water.

Evaporation through Transpiration• Water from plants and trees can also turn into water vapor and rise into the atmosphere through the process of transpiration.

Condensation The process of water

vapor turning back into liquid water as tiny water droplets or ice crystals.

Why do we see condensation as clouds? Light reflecting off the

water droplets or ice crystals makes it appear in white-grey tones.

Condensation• We see condensation in our daily lives• What are some places or objects we can see condensation on?

Precipitation As the tiny water droplets and ice

crystals that were formed through condensation grow larger or bump into each other they become too heavy to stay in the sky.

They begin to fall as rain or snow. Depending on the winds and the

temperatures, precipitation may fall as sleet or hail too.

Runoff All the water that falls from the sky is pulled down hill by gravity.

Eventually all runoff makes it back to the oceans, stored in lakes, or seeps into the ground and is stored in the water table.

Water Cycle Animation While watching the following,

animation you should be able to tell me what each part represents.

Assignment With a partner you will draw your own

diagram of the water cycle on poster paper. Your diagram must label the following

clearly: Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Runoff

Make it colorful with color pencil, paint, or water colors.

You will present your diagram to the class.
