HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE?

Investigation

Chapter 13 Lesson 2

Pages E50-E51

Page 2: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

Objectives

• Compare and contrast physical and chemical changes

• Recognize that a physical change does not involve a change in the type of matter undergoing change

• Recognize that the same amount of matter exists before and after a chemical change takes place

Page 3: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

Why it matters. . .

• What happens when an ice cube melts?

• What happens to iron in the rain?

• Where does the matter in a piece of wood go when the wood is burned?

Page 4: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

Why it matters. . .

• When you shape wood with a saw, you have only changed its physical properties

• If you burn the wood, it is a chemical change in properties

Physical Properties

• Measured or detected by the senses

• Include: State, Size, Odor, Color

Length, Mass, Volume

Page 7: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

Chemical Properties

• Ability or tendency of a material to change its chemical makeup

• Atoms and molecules create a new arrangement and a new material with different properties from the original material is formed.

Inquiry Skill . . .

• COMPARE– When you compare, you determine

how two or more organisms, objects, or events are similar and how they are different.

COMPARE

YOU WILL BE COMPARING AND CONTRASTING THE

PROPERTIES OF MILK AND VINEGAR

Page 22: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

Question or Problem?

• What happens when milk and vinegar mix?

Page 23: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

HYPOTHESIZE

• Write your hypothesis on your investigation paper.

– What do you predict will happen when milk and vinegar mix?

Page 25: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

SAFETY!!!!!

Wear goggles during this investigation!!!

4. Procedures:

{WRITE: See attached sheet}

You will be given a copy of the procedures to staple to your paper.

Page 28: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

COLLABORATE

• Work with your partner.• Create a chart large enough for you to

include written observations• You can create this chart on the back of

your investigation sheet• Example is on the next slide • On your investigation sheet under 5. Data

write: See back of paper

Data Chart to Create

MILK VINEGAR Combined

Milk &

Vinegar

Properties

Behavior after shaking

Page 30: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

OBSERVE

• Pour 100mL of milk into one jar• Pour 100mL of vinegar into the

other jar• Study the properties of each liquid• Record your observations on your

chart

Page 31: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

OBSERVE

• Tightly cover the jar of milk and shake vigorously

• Set the jar back on your table

• Observe how the milk returns along the sides to the bottom of the jar

• Record your observations

Page 32: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

OBSERVE

• Tightly cover the jar of vinegar and shake vigorously

• Set the jar back on your table

• Observe how the milk returns along the sides of the bottom of the jar

• Record your observations

Page 33: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

EXPERIMENT

• Uncover the jars and carefully pour a small amount of vinegar into the milk.

• Observe the interaction of the two liquids.

• Record your observations.

Page 34: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

EXPERIMENT

• Pour the rest of the vinegar into the milk.

• Stir the mixture and allow it to settle.

• Record your observations.

Page 35: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

EVALUATE RESULTS

• Discuss with your lab partner the chart you created.

• Compare and Contrast the milk and vinegar properties when separate and then when mixed.

• Record your conclusion of your hypothesis on your investigation sheet (#6)

Page 36: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

EXPLAIN RESULTS

• At your group, discuss your results with each other.

Page 37: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

QUESTION?

• What kind of change took place when milk and vinegar were combined?

• CHEMICAL CHANGE– The result was a new substance

Page 38: HOW DOES MATTER CHANGE? Investigation Chapter 13 Lesson 2 Pages E50-E51.

WOW

• You are now an expert in Chemical and Physical Change.

• Well, if you are not sure don’t worry. As we read the next lesson you should have a lot more confidence!

• Way to go!!!!!!
