How Do We Prevent and Treat Blisters? What are blisters? Blisters form due to a combination of friction, heat and moisture on an area of skin; most commonly on the feet. They can also be caused from burns or allergic reactions/ skin infections. Blisters can be very painful small pockets of fluid in the upper layers of the skin. In some cases the capillaries may have burst due to pinching pressures deeper in the skin layers forming blood blisters. So how do we prevent blisters from forming? • Appropriately fitted footwear can help to avoid excessive pressure/rubbing in one area • Gradually wear in shoes and orthotics • Wear socks that are made of natural fibres to draw away the moisture • Shoes without seams and/or with good cushioning and grip around the heels will prevent friction
