Do now…Look at the three different types of

seeds in your groups.

Make observations to figure out the different ways seeds might travel.

Record your observations and your ideas in your science journals and be ready to share.

Why do seeds need to travel?

Plants need to grow spread out so they do not block sun light or take nutrients from the soil.

Seeds are dispersed so that they can grow far away from each other.

Disperse: to scatter or spread apart

Seeds that are dispersed by wind

Some plants disperse their seeds through the wind. They are light enough to be carried.

Example: Dandelion

What makes a dandelion

seeds good for wind travel?

Seeds that travel by animal… Fleshy fruit attract

animals that eat the fruit, seeds and all.

Then the seeds are passed through in the animals droppings

They also get caught in animal’s fur

Seeds that travel by water

Coconuts are seeds that travel by water. Their outer layer allow them to float in the ocean to new places.

Lets make a seed that can travel by wind!

Using paper and scissors, design a seed that could be easily carried by the wind.

Think about seeds you know!

Reflect

In your science journals,

Describe 3 different ways seeds travel.

Give an example of a seed for each (try to think of ones we have not talked about)

Why each seed is good for its form of travel

How this helps the plant survive in its environment.
