Tools

Page 4: How do scientists use tools and stay safe

Tool : is an object used to do work. You can use tools to observe.

Tools can help you measure: * volume * temperature * length * distance * masstools can help you collect and record data.

Page 5: How do scientists use tools and stay safe

Data are facts and information that you observe.

* Computers help you record data.

Computers help you share observations with others and find new information.

* Camera is a tool to record data .

Some tools you use to observe make objects appear larger.

Binoculars : are a tool that helps you see things that are far away.

Page 7: How do scientists use tools and stay safe

Binoculars help you see birds nesting in trees

Unit of measure :is the quantity you use to measure something.Scientists use units of the metric system when they make measurements.

* Meters and centimeters are metric units used to measure length.

* Feet and inches are units of the united states system. They are used to measure length.

Thermometers measure temperature. Thermometers are marked in degrees Celsius(C) and degrees Fahrenheit (F). Scientists usually record data in degrees Celsius.

Graduated cylinder can be used to measure volume, or the amount of space an object takes up. Volume is measured in milliliters(ml)

Clocks and stopwatches are used to measure time.

Rulers and meter sticks to measure length and distance in meters (m) and centimeters (cm).

Hand lens enlarges objects too. It does not enlarge objects as much as a microscope does. It is easier to carry, though.

Microscopes use several lenses to make objects appear larger. Microscopes let you see more detail.

Balance can be used to measure an object’s mass in grams.

Safety

Safety goggles : is a tool that helps protect you.

Safety rules to remember- listen to your teacher’s instructions.- Read each activity carefully.- Never taste or smell materials unless your teacher tells you to.- Wear safety goggles, wear gloves, and tie hair back when needed.- Handle scissors and other equipment carefully.- Keep your workplace neat and clean.- Clean up spills immediately.- Tell your teacher immediately about accidents or if you see something that looks unsafe.- Wash your hands well after every activity.- Return all materials to their proper places.

When scientists explore underwater, they need certain tools to stay safe.

The scuba divers need: 1- filled with oxygen to breathe. 2- to protect their skin.
