HOW DID I ATTRACT/ADDRESS MY AUDIENCE? James Toulmin
HOW DID I ATTRACT/ADDRESS MY AUDIENCE?James Toulmin
MY AUDIENCEThe audience that I have chosen for my Magazine would be University students, predominately male, who come from an ABC1 background. Obviously, they should be interested in Folk music. One of the reasons that I have chosen this audience is due to the audience of fROOTS magazine. According to the website of fROOTS magazine, their audience is mainly people who are in the ABC1 category, and also those who are well-educated. My own research confirmed that a good proportion of the university students who filled out my survey were interested in Folk Music.
THE FRONT COVEROn the front cover I have used a young model, around the same age as my target audience. This would allow them to better relate to the model shown. As the audience I have tried to attract will have an interest in folk music, I have used a model who looks like a stereotypical folk musician; he is bearded, has slightly unkempt hair, and holding an acoustic guitar. I have used names such as The Lumineers, and Mumford & Sons. This will help attract people who listen to the bands’ music.
THE CONTENTS PAGE
On the Contents Page, I have mainly used articles to address my audience. As with the Front Cover, I have used the names of famous bands to help attract fans of them to read the magazine. Another feature I have included is the addition of contests, notably a contest to win gig tickets. Other magazines have used this feature before to attract readers who would not normally purchase the magazine, but would like a chance to win.
THE DOUBLE PAGE SPREADWith the double page spread, I have used a contemporary design on the left of the page. The modern look will hopefully be appealing to young adults, such as university students. The article I have written is of a long enough length to be enjoyed by the more well educated readers, but it isn’t too long. The language I have used is fairly articulate, helping identify with the University age audience that I have aimed for.
THE COLOUR SCHEMEFolk music has always been associated with nature, and the colour scheme that I have selected for my magazine has strong natural connotations. The main colour that I have used is an earthy yellow colour, highlighted with two shades of green that compliment each other well, and the natural green shade has connotations of nature and plants. I have also used the colour purple in small amounts throughout; it is a deep shade of purple, akin to that of a flower, or a grape. All of these colours work well together as a colour scheme, and to aid me in the choice of these colours, I used the Dulux website to assist me in different complimentary colours.
