COOL STOOL PERSPECTIVE

“The Dancer”

The idea for this stool came from my fascination with dance. Dance is often described as “life itself” and as a way to “feel the meaning of a moment in time”.

I imagined a stool that could capture the dynamism of dance and the fluid motions of the human body in move-ment. I wanted to capture the perfect, rhythmic technique and the free-form expression that makes up dance. These two polar opposites, rigidity and fluidity combine to create an art form that really expresses the richness of human life.

I tried to show these characteristics of dance through two design moves. Firstly, the octagonal seat of the stool represents the rhythmic flow of dance, whereas the bottom of the stool releases itself from the polygonal rigidity seen in the seat to represent the emotion and free-form expression that gives dance, life. I sculpted the stool’s body through the use of S-curves, an element of natural beauty, that represents the curves of a dancer in motion. As you walk around the stool, these curves move and bend to capture the dynamic move-ment of a dancer in rhythmic motion.
