How Are We Doing? The Menninger Clinic is off to a solid start in FY 2016. As shown in the Radar Chart above, we are on track to accomplish our Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) for the year. Of special note, our managers have done a good job control- ling expenses, which has helped us to achieve our financial target despite volumes which were behind plan in July. Menninger Enhances Compensation I am delighted to announce that this month Menninger will implement major improvements to compensation, based upon our extensive analysis of the 2016 Houston market. Eligible Menninger employees will receive up to a 3% market increase to their base compensation. In addition, certain employees will receive further increases related to adjustments in pay ranges and in applied years of experience. All changes are retroactive to July 5 and will appear beginning with the September 18 paycheck. Employees will receive a custom letter detailing the enhancements to their compensation. Menninger staff who are on faculty at BCM will receive a separate correspondence regarding their salary enhance- ments, pending finalization by BCM. We invite all employees to accept these salary enhance- ments as a sign of our appreciation for your commitment to pursuing perfect care, as well as an indication that Menninger is committed to being the best place to work! Kudos In a major nationwide effort to improve emergency care for adults with suicide risk, the Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) of SAMSHA has just published “Caring for Adult Patients with Suicide Risk: A Consensus Guide for Emergency Departments.” This ER Guide provides informa- tion about decision support, brief interventions and discharge planning with adult patients who have been identified as having some risk of suicide. Congratulations to Menninger’s own Justin Coffey, MD, who served on the Consensus Panel. Transition on our Clinic Board This month we bid farewell to Norman Schultz, who is retiring from The Menninger Clinic Board after 30+ years of service. Norman has made so many important contri- butions to Menninger, through his generous gifts of time, expertise and philanthropy, and most especially through his superb leadership of the Board’s Finance, Audit, Compliance and Compensation Committee since 2009. Working closely with Board Chair Robert C. Wilson III, Norman shepherded Menninger’s financial resources through the construction of our new Epicenter campus, all the while ensuring the viability of The Menninger Clinic Foundation. Please join me and the Directors of both Boards in thanking Norman for his incredible support and leadership, and in wishing him every success and happiness (including lower golfing scores) in his retirement. With this commitment in mind, on September 21 Menninger will become a smoke-free campus. While it is the practice to support any patient who wishes to stop smoking, the move to smoke free involves a system change as it will affect all patients, visitors, faculty and staff. An interdisciplinary team, under the direction of Susan Hardesty, MD, Senior Vice President and Medical Director, is putting the final touches on a comprehensive plan to sup- port the transition to a healthier smoke-free environment. The patient-centered approach includes: tapering for current patients, an evidence-based interdisciplinary smoking cessa- tion protocol, additional patient education, and new spaces and activities for supportive self-management, socialization and exercise. Transition on our Clinic BoardThis month we bid farewell to Norman Schultz, who is retiring from The Menninger Clinic Board after 30+ years of service.

Norman has made so many important contri-butions to Menninger, through his generous gifts of time, expertise and philanthropy, and most especially through his superb leadership of the Board’s Finance, Audit, Compliance and Compensation Committee since 2009. Working closely with Board Chair Robert C. crucial to a smooth rollout. As such, current patients have been engaged in planning for the transition. As is the practice at Menninger, smoking cessation treatment is customized to meet the individual needs of each patient. This initiative represents a major organizational change that supports the health needs of people with mental illness with a focus on sustaining a healthy lifestyle during their recovery journey.

Pain Management Program Now OpenA five-week comprehensive protocol for helping patients to better manage chronic pain is now available at The Clinic. This inpatient program is ideal for adults who have not ex-perienced relief from prior treatments for chronic pain. Alok Madan, PhD, MPH, McNair Scholar and Senior Psychologist, and Janice Jiminez, PhD, MPH, Postdoctoral Fellow in Pain Psychology, are leading the treatment team. Depression, personality disorders and other conditions may predispose individuals to experience chronic pain. Up to 40 percent of our adult inpatients report experiencing pain in addition to their psychiatric illness. We now offer evidence-based, nonpharmacologic therapies, including biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness meditation, aqua and physical therapy as well as yoga. Patients in this program also have the opportunity to participate in research examining the effectiveness of adjunctive neuro-modulation interventions. Our CPAS team also can provide medically supervised detoxification from opiod medication or other addictive substances. Genetic testing is available to help personalize medication regimens for pain management.

Psychology, Social Work Fellows Graduate

Fellows celebrated with supervisors, teachers and team members, as well as family during the August 26 graduation. Pictured is the mother of Kittredge Stephenson, PhD, taking a class photo. We are thrilled three graduates will be joining the Menninger staff: Jennifer Gardner, LMSW, on Hope; Chelsey Silveria, LMSW, on Compass; and Michelle Patriquin, PhD, in the Outpatient Services and as a second-year Fellow.

Menninger Welcomes Team MembersThe Office of Philanthropy is delighted to have Chris Clark, Senior Director of Development and Major Gifts, and Lauryn Sanford, Events and Project Manager, on the team.
