How a School Computer Made the Richest
Man in the World
Today, Bill Gates is one of the richest people in the world. He started the computer company called Microsoft. It is one of the most important computer companies in the world. Most computers use Microsoft programs.
Bill Gates has always liked computers, but when he was a kid, there were not very many computers in the world yet. Back then, most computers were very large and very expensive. When Bill was in eighth grade, his school received a computer as a gift. He started playing with it. He designed a simple but fun tic-tac-toe game to play on the computer.
Bill’s school saw how talented and skilled he was with computers, so they asked for his help. He used a computer to make a schedule of classes for all of the students and teachers in the school. The school was very happy for Bill’s help. He and his friends spent a lot of time on the computer. They got to be very good at working with it.
When Bill Gates and his friend Paul Allen were 17 years old, they made a new company. The company used computers to count cars in traffic. The company was a success. Before that, people had to count all of the cars. With their program, a computer did all of the counting. This was much faster and more efficient than before.
After that, Bill Gates and Paul Allen went to college. By then, computers were smaller and cheaper. There were also a lot more computers in the world, but computers are just machines. Machines need to be told what to do. Because of their history with computers, Bill and Paul were very good at telling computers what to do.
Bill Gates and Paul Allen decided to make a new company. They wanted to make a computer company that would help everybody use computers. They named their company Microsoft. Microsoft became very successful because it helped people use their computers. We use computers and Microsoft to help us do so much today!
