Squatter camps

• People (often immigrants from rural areas)settle on land which they do not own, building makeshift shelters

There are no amenities (toilet, cleanwater, electricity etc.)• Because they are illegal the authorities do

not provide any services (schools, rubbishcollection, health centres etc.)

• The conditions result in a high level ofdisease

Solutions to the problems ofshanty towns

• People evicted and houses bulldozed – thishas failed because people just buildelsewhere in the city

• People relocated to safer areas with basicamenities – but people often resist thismove as they will be too far from work

• Authorities improve the housing, providetoilets, water supply, schools and givingpeople legal rights to the land – but someareas are so overcrowded it is difficult toimprove them

• The residents form cooperatives and

organise improvements themselves
